Ich finde es wirklich beeindruckend, wie Du an die Dinge herangehst und mit viel Sachverstand Lösungen entwickelst, um etwas für Deine Ambition zu nutzen. Mein höchster Respekt dafür! Was mich bei Deinen Dokumentation auch sehr beeindruckt sind die vielen Details, die Du herzeigst, Dein Wissen, Deine Erfahrungen teilst - und wie Du es schaffst mich zu entschleunigen, wenn ich Deine Videos ansehe. Das ist wohl das beste überhaupt. Obwohl: mit den vielen Halterungen bei diesem Neuzugang ist diese Fokusierung auf EIN Bild wohl auch Geschichte ;-)

Thank you so much! Fixing old cameras is mostly doable, because it’s mostly mechanical issues you are dealing with. What 5x7 do you have?
@@mhaustria I think it's an old Deardorf. All wood. Came with a bunch of wooden holders in a big case, like a suitcase.

I bought myself a nice Graflex camera some years ago, with a bunch of holders, even got some plates and such with the intent to start wetplate photography. Then found out that getting the chemicals in Sweden is insanely difficult. How do you manage in Austria? Is it easier there?

@@ChristianKlant that's nice, though I fear that would be me committing a crime as the chemicals (especially the collodion) are not legal here for private citizens. May have to wait until I have my business up and running (not photo related) and can apply for proper permits.

Gestern habe ich mir mein Traumobjektiv selbst zu Weihnachten geschenkt, es ist ein Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 1.5/75mm in sehr gutem Zustand. @@mhaustria Ich benutze eine Sony a7 II, also im Kleinbildformat. Früher hatte ich eine Mamiya Pro TL 645 und Pentacon Six.
Also the proud owner of a Mentor camera. Mine's an SLR, though (which is kinda helpful for portraits, sometimes). Still haven't done any wet plates on it, but it's on my to-do-list. Great content, as always :)

@@mhaustria I did already, a few years ago! Just never with this camera. Haven't done it for the past 4-5 years but will definitely go back to it as soon as life allows it. It's my favorite historical process, from all the ones I've tried :)

@@mhaustria A lot of them, actually. I was lucky enough to have Historical Processes as one of the subjects back in college. I did:
Wet plate collodion
Gum bichromate
Cyanotype
VanDyke Brown
Carbon printing
Platinum/Palladium printing
Anthotype
Silver gelatin emulsion (technically not a historical process, but still)
Salt printing
Albumen printing
For Chrysotype and Daguerreotype, I only saw live demonstrations -- never actually tried them myself.
I also played around with building giant room cameras (only video in my channel is actually one of those projects).
Seeing your videos makes me want to ditch work and dedicate myself 100% to the analog life :D

Vielen Dank für dieses großartige Video. Ich habe auch eine Mentor Studio, bin aber noch recht neu im Großformat. Die Mentor hat mein Vater kurz nach der Wende gerettet, als unser Nachbar seinen Keller entrümpelt hat und sie gerade in den Müll stellen wollte. Er hat ihm gesagt, was das ist, aber der Nachbar wollte sie trotzdem entsorgen. Und so ist sie dann zu uns gekommen. Ein 250mm Tessar f4.5 von Carl Zeiss Jena war auch dabei. Die Kamera ist über Jahre in Vergessenheit geraten, und irgendwann wollte ich Großformat lernen und habe mir dann die Planfilmkassetten und Filmhalter besorgt. Aber an Wet Plate habe ich mich noch nicht heran getraut.
Meine Frage: Könnte ich die Planfilmkassetten für Wetplate nicht auch in der Form verwenden, wie sie sind, ohne sie zu zerschneiden? Ginge es, wenn man anstelle von Glas Aluplatten nimmt, die ja vermutlich dünner sind?
Es gibt unterschiedlichste Halter für die Kamera. Aber bei der Nassplattenfotografie ein „hineinschieben“ oft problematisch, deshalb lieber der Umbau. Viel Freude mit der Kamera!

Great question!
There are many reasons for me:
It is easier to fill a tray and to pour it pack into the bottle.
With ulf plates I had some issues with the tank: scratched, or dropped plates (maybe it is just me)
With a tray, the alcohol and ether can evaporate easier than with a tank.
When traveling, I mostly use tanks.

i also use Leitz Dimaron 150mm F2.8 on my graflex..Have Dimar 200mm F4 but that is bit soft for me :)

Wenn du die Platte weghälst vom Rand der Kasette ("litle silver parts"), stimmt die Position der Emulsion überein mit dem Bild auf der Mattscheibe? (Sprich wird dein Bild nicht defokusiert?)
Die Platte liegt ja genau dort auf wo auch der Film aufliegen würde (nach Unten) Der Abstand zu den Rändern hat damit nichts zu tun. der ist nur dazu da, damit die Platte durch die Kapliarwirkung weniger Staub ansaugt.
I've read that the projection Hektors are triplets, I'm not sure though.
That sounds interesting, where did you read that. I discussed this with some others before and everybody was talking of a 4 part design.
Dammn, I need to get a 3D printer as well ;) I use a 150 mm Hektor on my Graflex and I've managed to shoot wet plates handheld with a 1/8 sec in the bright sunlight with a lot of UV ;)

@@mhaustria yeah, even the Leitz Epis lenses are great performers. I use a 600 f4.5 for 30x40 and 40x50 portrait work.
