  • AIRCRAFT CRASH IN WASHINGTON: “You can't just fly around there!” Did the tower fail?
After the plane crash in the US capital Washington, hundreds of rescue workers are searching the Potomac River for the 64 passengers of a passenger jet and three passengers of a military helicopter. Around 300 emergency services personnel are on site, said fire chief John Donnelly on Thursday at Reagan National Airport. The conditions are “extremely tough”. Strong winds, cold temperatures and the murky water of the river are hindering the search by the fire department divers.
An American Airlines regional plane with 64 people on board collided with an army helicopter on Wednesday evening (local time) while landing at Reagan National Airport in Washington. According to Washington's mayor Muriel Bowser, both planes crashed into the Potomac. According to the army, the helicopter was on a night training flight when the collision occurred. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called it an “absolutely tragic” accident.
Nothing was initially known about the fate of the 64 people on board the aircraft and the three soldiers in the military helicopter. According to the Washington Post, emergency services recovered several bodies from the water.
