- Dune Part 2 is a worldwide success at the box office. Denis Villeneuve's Dune Part 2 movie has made $178.5 million at the worldwide box office with a domestic opening of $82.5 million. In this video, I discuss what the current global success of the Dune Part 2 movie means along with the potential for a Dune Messiah.
Paul Atreides leads nomadic tribes in a battle to control the desert planet Arrakis. Dune is an upcoming epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve with a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, Villeneuve, and Eric Roth. The film is an international co-production of Canada, Hungary, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It is the first of a planned two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, which will cover roughly the first half of the book. The film stars an ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

Here's my rundown of Dune Part 2's box office performance, what it could make in its entire run and what it means for Dune Messiah.
UPDATE: Dune Part 2 has equalled the US opening weekend of Oppenheimer with $82.5 million.
I saw it with my brother and father the first time, and my fiancé the second time. Friday, I'm going to see it a 3rd time with my daughter.
Challenge accepted
Contemplating going to see it tomorrow. That’ll be my third time.
@@andrewalexander96 sameee
I’m going again too! IMAX this time 😂
@@MrsTruthTeller lucky, no Imax in my country
This movie needs to be watched in IMAX. A regular theater does not do it justice. It’s literally a work of art.
I watched in both formats, just to see. Regular theatres do not do it justice. This must be seen in IMAX or Dolby.
@@vongoethe111 Im going to see again in IMAX
💯
I watched it in IMAX and the theatre was so loud that I have my left ear damaged. I honestly hated IMAX
@@vongoethe111well IMAX is like thousands of kilometers away from my city 😅.
Wouldn't be surprised to see a green light for Dune Messiah before the end of March.
Sounds right to me
DV is already writing the screenplay! Let's hope we get it in 2026/27
@@MichelePardinihopefully! Only think that I think prevents that is he said he might take a break before messiah, both for personal reasons like the desert being physically draining, and source reasons like the time skip.
I can only hope we get it as soon as possible but he should take his time to perfect it, not something easy to adapt
It’s already been greenlit at the studio I believe, just under wraps, as Hans Zimmer said DV has already given him material to work on.
I bet it's been internally approved already. Can't wait to see how he handles the story on that one -- it's going to have to diverge from the book a bit more than Part 1 and 2, I think.
In Brazil it's a massive success, everyone is highly regarding and commenting about it
I rarely want to watch a Movie twice at the theater. This movie is an exception FOR SURE.
The payoff on this movie is amazing, probably top 3 in my book, alongside the LoTR Trilogy
If they somehow make Dune Messiah interesting (the book is great, but I don't see how they can make a good movie out of it) then it will equal LOTR in my book.
@@JeffGreenNV Yep, would definitely be one of the greatest film trilogies of all time.
I don’t see how this story can be wrapped up in one more movie though. Soo many lose ends
@@Breadfan00 yeah
@@Breadfan00From your mouth to the film-god's ears. I hope it has a lot more episodes.
Best science fiction movie ever made, every single shot is GORGEOUS, i almost couldnt believe what i was watching, Villeneuve is a genius and an absolute blessing to sci-fi fans
The double whammy of COVID and superhero fatigue has changed my movie habits. I don’t go as much, but I reward great movies with multiple viewings, especially if filmed in a way that is improved by imax and other premium screening experiences
Saw it on a huge screen in comfy recliners with a beer and popcorn, and the sound absolutely enveloped my soul, it was vibrating my rib cage. Fucking amazing music. The only thing that comes even close to that kind of raw powerful sound is Author & Punisher.
Did the exact same, watched a on a regular screen due to no good IMAX seats then watched it a week later with good imax seats. The Imax really does enhance the experience.
I swear, I saw this movie Friday, Saturday and Sunday and I'm going again this weekend.
Saw it with my dad on thursday then he went and watched it on Sunday😂. Going back to watch it soon, so unbelievably good
I did the same thing!!!
bro is on stilgar levels of glazing
Going back to watch it again soon ☺️☺️
@@donniek7418on point😂😂😂
I so need to go back and see this again, and then again for a third time
Me too
Me too
Literally just booked my ticket for the second viewing 😄 won’t be as good as the IMAX screening but I’m still excited as hell to experience it again 🙌
Already saw it twice! May need to go back a couple more times at least.
That is what is going to keep this movie going. There’s so much, you have to see it multiple times and discuss it with friends and family. It’s been a while since a movie made you think, didn’t insult your intelligence.
I saw it in the theatres this weekend, and it was AWESOME!!!!!!! Basically the best book adaptation since LOTR
Man can you imagine if Messiah turns out just as successful…it’ll be the perfect Sci-Fi trilogy in recent times. I think I’d crack under the immense pressure Denis must be under, him and the rest of the creative team are absolute legends
This film is nuts, I adore Part one and have been patiently waiting for Part two, It is worth every bit of waiting to say the least
I still think it need to been in a row, especially for those like me who didn't read the book. I liked the one but felt something was missing - I did'nt even know the film was split in two due to its lengh- but after the second I got a ood grasp about the intricacies of the univers and politicals shenanigans. The film to be fair, need to be judge with the two parts. For my concern, it's grandiose.
You know what I'd love see? I'd love for sci-fi movies to take the place of comic book movies as the next big genre. I think people are burned out on comic book heroes, so Id love to see more deep sci-fi like Dune being made. Hopefully a good box office take will help this..
That would just self destruct itself. Superhero movies were good, until they became too profitable and turned into manufactured content, the same would happen with sci-fi or any genre. If something’s good, it’s just good
@@SamuraiShampoo77so? Take the good ones and ignore those who are clearly just cashgrabs. The parasites always follow where something gets big. Let's just take what isn't corrupted by them.
@@SamuraiShampoo77they were never good.
I’ve seen it 3 times already and I’m not a book reader only got into the franchise from the first recent movie
The first book is pretty good for general readers, but everything after that gets droll, and way overcomplicated for often no good reason. The last two books are pretty much unnecessary.
Dune 2 is a magnificent masterpiece. I felt the climax is a cliffhanger of sorts.
Really? Just because the end of the movie shows Paul and his Fremen army (and by extension, the rest of the known universe) about to engage in all out holy war for ultimate control of everything? Cliffhanger?
Hmm… I just don’t see it.
lol. Cheers!
@@stvbrsn Maybe the OP was talking about Chani riding off into sunset. She might refurn as an invincible girl boss who becomes the God Empress.
How is it a cliffhanger?
@@stvbrsnhardly a war. The sadukar was the only real force left and the freeman walked all over them. The rest of the houses are bassically nothing.
@@paintspot1509 I think you will find this war went on for years and involved huge casualties. Refer to Dune Messiah.
I've seen it twice, and I liked it more the second time. I was more relaxed and stopped trying to focus on comparing it to the book, so it was a much better experience. As a book fan, there are certain things I wish had stayed, or been done differently, but on its own, it works great as an adaptation into movie form. They capture most of the big moments that really matter at the core.
SAME.
Same happened to me, and after the second viewing, I came out thinking all the changes were better and make more sense
@@theavatar9191 I'm not sure I'd say the changes made more sense, but I'm more "at peace" with them, and see it as an alternative version of the story. Not better necessarily, just more streamlined and a little different.
@@faded1to3black It makes more sense in terms of poetic storytelling, which is moreso a filmmaking thing. Paul avenging his father and the great houses not accepting his ascension just makes sense. If you're not thinking about the book, you don't even question these things.
Na, the changes really made the film suffer immensely. Along with lackluster acting.
For me this is the best movie I have seen in my life
It will Hit “ ONE BILLION “ ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨🙌💖
one for the blu-ray collection
800mill to 1billion 🙏🙏🙏
My ears still ringing from the awesome experience I had with Dune damn this is some good cinema
I think multiple viewings are really going to help this one. People are seeing it in a standard theater, then going out to catch it on IMAX.
This is a repeat theater watch. I think the legs could be great for this movie. I don't go to the theater to see a movie twice but I am for this. At least once more.
Im a DV cheerleader so will be seeing this film multiple times.
The fact that the first one released streaming simultaneously but STILL pulled a hefty profit at the theater pretty much sums up what it is people want...
I think it will do well, the London BFI IMAX is virtually sold out for the entire month and it has very good word-of-mouth feedback and people watching a second and third time, and a high number of those visits are in the premium IMAX/Dolby.
The head of IMAX said the reason they couldn't make even more money opening weekend was because all their theatres were full.
It’s even better on the second watch! But third times a charm lol, so I’ll see it one more time second weekend. I’m in love with all of the performances and film making
I am so happy dune part 2 is a success
Denis Villeneuve has already cemented his status as a legend in the movie industry for putting out critical hits after hits, with the adaptation of Dune 1 as the culmination of all the skills he had acquired beforehand, from his humble indie beginnings to ever bigger projects.
I honestly see it ending up being one of the highest grossing films of 2024 as well as one of the most awarded films of the 2025 awards season. 1 Billion would not surprise me when its all said and done and seeing it winning a LOT of awards would also not surprise me. The success of films like Dune part 2 and Oppenheimer make me happy because it shows that there is a real demand for such mature serious high budget films in a world that has been dominated by superhero films and poor remakes for years.
It's absolutely stunning in iMax.
My eyes were glued to the screen the whole time, and with the pacing, it does not feel like a 3 hour movie.
Watched it twice already. Will watch it again on Thursday.
Third time watching on imax and counting 🗣️🗣️
Just got back from my third watch, this one in IMAX 70mm, it’s as if I saw it for the first time. Breathtaking.
I watched in on IMAX days ago and I'm still obsessed. So, i think i'll do it a second time while I can. So happy to see a movie that doesn't underestimate my inteligence. Thank you.
Where I am in California, tickets for next weeks IMAX showings are already almost sold out. I think it's going to have a great second weekend.
The Water of Life looks like blue Powerade
Way more epic cinematography than part one. I drove an hour to see it in regular IMAX and I liked it enough that I will go see it in the 1570 film IMAX at Lincoln Center soon. Emotionally satisfying. Also, the IMAX trailer for Furiosa is fantastic!
Epic Masterpiece.
I viewed Dune 1 twice in theaters(both IMAX & standard)and at least six times via cable… l plan to do the same with Dune 2(maybe more,l understand the IMAX presentation is spectacular)l do hope your prediction is correct,l look forward to Messiah 😊
Saw it and was mesmerized. Want to see it again in IMAX
I watched it on the opening day 1st March. Including me, there were 12 people in the theatre. Not that I was bothered, the film was amazing.
Same but I went at 3 but when I left a lot of people were getting there don’t know what they were watching though
Same here, but we went at 4:00 p.m. on a workday, and the weather was absolutely horrible.
I went and saw it in the theatres after a twenty year lapse in movie going! Just excellent! I am going with cousins again for my birthday. Love both Dune movies. ❤❤❤❤❤
Saw it twice already, going for a third tomorrow
I love it towards the end when all the firemen come riding on the sandworms the sandworms are my favorite part of the movie
Saw this film in IMAX and Dolby and was blown away. Overall the IMAX experience is the best imo but Dolby was not far behind. If you have either of those formats near you, you can't go wrong spending a little extra if you have the means.
Dune Messiah is already in pre production. Wish we could of gotten another Blade Runner movie
Saw it two days ago in regular theater up the street next week I see it with my boys in 70mm IMAX!
I'm going for the second time...
I've seen it once at my local IMAX, once at London BFI 70mm IMAX today, and have just booked Friday dual laser IMAX at the London Science Museum, the film is so good I will see it for a 3rd time.
I think this movie could hit $900 million, audiences want good creative and fantastical movies from creators who really care about their craft, and Villeneuve checks all those boxes.
the Dune part 1 movie did make me want to read the book which I did and now I want to read it again after watching part 2 so well done monsieur Villeneuve.
This will cross $1.5 billion worldwide, maybe touch $2 billion. This is one movie since Titanic that I want to watch again. And I have never said this for a 3-hour movie that I would have sit through the end if it was 4 hours or even 5 hours long. My 65-year-old uncle compared the cinema experience to that of Star Wars.
We already have the Messiah.
Cortex.
Haha you're the man!
Saw the movie last friday. Was so blown away by it that I immediately wanted to see it again, so i'm gonna go watch it again this friday
You filled me in on what was not in the movie. Thank you. I enjoyed it more with the changes. I think it will break a billion.
I’ve seen it three times and I’m itching for a fourth 😂
Ita one of the most anticipated movies of the year....It more or less will reach a billion dollars.
I really hope it reaches the billion. it really deserves it
I'm actually looking forward to Messiah. I really hope we see Children of Dune too. God Emperor and Beyond... that's another question.
I saw it in IMAX with my brother, my mom and friend that I've known for 24 years. Ready to see it again.
Brilliant and faithful adaption even despite the changes from the book. It got the tone right.
I'm trying to get my girl to travel so we can see it in IMAX. She introduced me to Dune Part One just two days ago and now I'm more hyped than she is lol
I’ve spent my whole life telling my friends about Dune. It’s sooo nice to get all my flowers now.
I wish they would let part 1 have another nationwide run in theatres
Man I really don't wanna wait til 2027-29' for Messiah. Was hoping for 2026
Remember, you'll be able to watch Rendezvous with Rama in the meantime!
I'm seeing it again this weekend because I missed ten minutes of the beginning and the IMAX experience was astonishing and immersive.
Great numbers. Well deserved
Dune 2 is awesome! I'm so glad it did well at the box office. Can't wait for MESSIAH!
I saw it last night, our sunday, at 10pm. It was the best action / adventure type movie I've seen since maybe... Django? Raiders? If its not my number one, its a close number 2.
Last week the Double Feature, this Saturday watching it again, but on 70mm - I'm so excited!
Dune Messiah will happen this film was amazing and the experience of this in the cinema is something I will never forget love this film and I can’t for the next one 💯💯💯
I am ready for part 3
The subtitles are funny. It started with "Den evil nerves". 😂
I've seen in on a Friday afternoon at 3pm in IMAX. The theater was almost full.
I saw it opening night in standard format and I am looking forward to seeing it again in IMAX. It was lots of fun and looking forward to full immersion.
I wished they’d turn the Dune Duology into 1 film. 5-6 hours isn’t too abysmal
I feel bad for Kung fu panda 4 it’s dropping this weekend and it’s going to be destroyed by Dune 2. I plan on going to see it a second time in IMAX this coming up weekend with my little sister.
I've never bought as many movie tickets for a single movie as this. 7 to be precise.
My guess... $750 million box office world wide. Of course Messiah! But I now think we can start hoping for God Emperor of Dune! That movie will be epic and set up the finale group of Herbert's original 6 book vision.
Given that I only managed to get IMAX tickets for the middle of next week after seeing the movie for the 1st time this weekend I’d say it’s longevity is non really a question. Even Oppenheimer wasn’t that hard to see, I don’t remember the last time when our local cinema was completely sold out the whole week.
It's gonna have legs 100%. In terms of going beyond that $700 million mark, that's what I meant when talking about longevity and using Oppie as an example. It just kept going. I think Part 2 is going to make a hell of a lot of money regardless!
Id love 850M but really 625-700 is my expectation. Movies really have taken a hit post pandemic and the comparison to Nolan is nice but Nolan's movie pedigree is longer and larger with general audiances. Dennis Vil. is king of Sci-Fi but thats a much smaller market.
$850M is far too high. I hope people aren't disappointed when this does $700-720M, which would already be amazing and very good legs.
I agree. A lot of people are projecting what they want this film to make, not what the market will bear. I'd love Dune Part 2 to earn that much, but $850 million seems out of reach. I'd love to be laughably wrong on this one.
IMAX theaters in South Africa where packed the past two weeks.
I would akso like to see Children of Dune get made. I feel like get through that book would make a goodnight end to the movie series.
IMO the first episode of the 'Children of Dune' mini-series is actually a good adaption of Dune Messiah.
I'll watch for the second time tomorrow. 😊
$1.5 Billion run......fans are going to watch this film 2, 3 and 4 times.
2:24 yeah, they should see a bump with the Japanese release.
You know they’re gonna love that scene with the worm handler.
I’m sorry… I had to.
will hit 1b
I watched it in x was amazing so long had to use the bathroom didn’t wanna leave 😂
Already saw it once in IMax planning to see it again next week.... Like mid week so less people so I can just go and soak it all in
am in China, i went theater last week to watch the movie, how is the box office for now?
I didn't know he was doing Rama, fkn hype.
First time, regular theater; second time IMAX 😘
I’m thinking Over $800 Million AND Best Picture 2024 🏆
My wife bought standard screening tickets. Yeah…going back for imax.
wtached it once and plan to watch it another 2 times !!!
"Den evil nerves"
Im going to watch it on Wednesday
