    Joe‘s story about the deer is nearly word-for-word what happened to my Great Grandpa during WW2. He was part of the island hopping campaign in the Pacific. They had captured an island, but not fully neutralized the Japanese presence there. He was assigned to guard airplanes at night from Japanese saboteurs. They’d come out of their caves at night, slit the throats of any guards, and blow up the planes.
    It was a moonless night, he was alone, and all he had was a pistol and a flashlight. Several hours pass and he hears a noise in the brush. It’s getting louder and louder as it closes on him. He’s terrified, praying, and thinking he’s about to get his throat slit. Then all of a sudden he hears a loud “BAAAH!”. It was a goat. He was so relieved that he said he could’ve kissed the goat, then and there.
    RIP Frederick Raymond Campbell, AKA “Paw Paw” ❤️

      His story reminded me of my first time bear hunting. Prey animals are super loud. Deer, mice, squirrels. Every time I heard one of those I reached for my gun. When the bear came up on me, I never heard him coming. Only when it was ten feet away and sniffing me. Predators are super quiet.

      Lol. The same stories my grandfather told me. He was also in the pacific and there is no way that you would step outside your area where your troops where and where they can see you, if you were to go for a pee or whatever you wouldn’t come back, they would find you dead in the morning with your throat cut. The terror that must be flowing through your body every minute of everyday while out there must have been horrific.

    • @darkart7176
      @darkart7176 Год назад +137

      Its a bit more than that. We have a very long tradition of dividing land with those tree lines. From what I know, it goes back into the mists of time and the reason why folks did it was to prevent land disputes. Once the tree line is planted, you can argue till you are blue in the face that this parcel is really yours, but it is not gonna fly. A fence can be moved, but a tree line is quite permanent and its kinda hard to say that your neighbour moved it by X meters while you were away on business. So yeah, I am sure those trees have positive effect on the agriculture, but the main reason that concept came about was a bit more pragmatic :)

    Absolutely loved this series. This is probably my favorite channel on RUclips. It's definitely the only one that when a video drops, I immediately stop whatever I'm doing I start watching it. I also don't tend to retch videos, whereas I have rewatched most of his historical videos multiple times. Lloyd has such a unique and passionate way of talking about subjects that is so amazing that I actually consider his tangents some of the best parts of the lecture. Perfect topic selection, research and presentation. Feel bad about the whole Hannibal debacle but literally everyrhing else about this channel is perfect. Only thing that could improve it is if Lloyd was willing to delegate a BIT of the work to others so we could get more frequent videos, but I suppose that would risk lowering the quality and that's not worth it. I just want to thank you for all the YEARS (at least 7 or 8 at this point think it's closer to 10 though) or entertainment you've provided me though. I'm an absolute history nerd and even when you talk about a subject I know very well there are always new facets I was completely unaware of.

    His story about the Deer is great. I had my own experience with a Deer when I was 7 years old, my mother, her friend and her son and I used to go for walks in a local forest every now and then, my friend and I would go running off into the forest to climb the trees and look for shotgun shells. This one time we ran in and got to this massive Oak tree and saw a fully grown Stag just behind it, with antlers at least 3 feet tall. We startle it and it charges, naturally we ran away and my mum said the following:
    "We heard a scream, then all of a sudden my son(me) comes flying out of the forest like a bullet being chased by this massive Stag"
    I managed to escape and the Deer turned a different direction. I still vividly remember the Deer stopping about 50 meters away, looking back at us, snorting and then walking off. I will never forget that experience lol.

    He yelled few times and then shot maybe everything he had in his magazine or maybe switched managizes.
    Finally, it became quiet.
    He was so scared.
    In the morning, they found a bull from nearby farm got shot on a lake coast. Water made his 4 legs sounds like a lot of people running.

    The narrow woods between fields are windbreaks. They're especially used in the large open flat plains of that area of Ukraine and Russia. Without those the wind would quickly build up and erode the top soil, or spread weed seeds, or lots of other bad things. They also serve as ancestral land border markers since the trees are also planted between different owners' fields and take ages to grow.
