First of all - love your review and channel. The name supersoft probably comes from the fact that this yarn is supersoft in comparison with other european yarns.. historicaly in europe the breeds of sheep had to be more sturdy and outdoorsy so the yarn is quite coarse (imagine shetland wool or loppi etc) ... so if a denmark company is producing yarn with merino which adds the softness - it's one of the softest yarn you can get produced in this region. At least this come from my understanding and knowledge of european fiber history. In conclusion - if you give this to an european knitter (especialy someone older) they will for sure claim that it's soft, because we do have completely different "setpoint" for wooly feeling. But of course everyone is different and some people are more sensitive and that's okay :)
Thank you so much for your honesty. I love the yarn on cones and use it often. I get tired of podcasters pushing expensive hand dyed yarns that are out of many peoples price range. Great yarn box presentation.
Drowning in Yarn - Knitting Podcast supersoft is oddly too scratchy for me. I love the cones! I am very fortunate that there are still mills that sell left over cones of yarn.
@@DrowninginYarn ColourMart... ever since I found out about them, I can not look at a skein of yarn the same way. Premium yarn in cones? Yes, yes and hell yea! I'm watching this video right now so I can justify buying yarn I don't need.

Good and thorough review. Enjoyed it. I'd go for the Coast based on your description. (The "plum" color is actually pronounced kah-sees, accent on the first syllable. It's a syrup made from black currents and is very popular in Europe. Used to flavor all kinds of things like sodas, lemonade, etc. Tastes like berries.)
I love holst garn yarn, and I find that it usually seems to take until the third wash of a sweater/hat before it really softens up. I think the oil just hangs out for awhile even if you Think you have gotten it all off.
Loved this - the colors you picked out are beautiful and I love the introduction to yarns I haven't seen or heard about before. I have also loved the length of your videos so far. So many of the knitting podcasts are 90+ minutes and it's hard to make time to watch (plus I work full-time and look at a computer all day), but I can always find time for a quick hit. I know some may be longer in the future but I hope you don't do away with shorter length vids. Keep it up!
Thank you for watching! And for the compliments! It takes me long enough to make these shorter videos, so I'm not sure I'll be making long videos any time soon. Haha. But I'm glad you enjoy the length :-)
I have been knitting with Holst Supersoft for several years and love it. I tend to hold it double together with one strand of Holst Titicaca alpaca. It makes up into a lovely soft fabric. I highly recommend it.
I know this is an old video, but they probably left on or reoiled the yarn for knitting machines, and yes once it's washed it'll come up soft. Thank you for the review it was very interesting. Cheers!
Great video and useful info. I use these yarns for Stephen West shawls mixed in with other brands. I’m glad to know I can double the strands to make a sweater. Thanks so much for providing this helpful material. 😊
While I'm still trying to downsize my stash I couldn't help myself and purchased 2 spools to treat myself for how much I've reduced my stash. Got one spool of tide and one spool of super soft. I usually crochet but just taught myself to knit and can't wait to play with these spools.
I just found your video and it's completely convinced me to order some cones from Holst! Thanks for the swatches and info about the bloom - super useful.
Okay, consider me intrigued! The Coast sounds like it would be perfect for my climate in Georgia! Lightweight and a wool/cotton blend! Thank you for sharing!!! Looking forward to seeing the sweaters you knit with those 😍
@@DrowninginYarn I have!! It was a worsted weight Flax sweater with Spud and Chloe Sweater yarn! I think it's 55/45 wool/cotton but it's been a minute so I can't remember the exact details but it was a pretty nice yarn! It did take a little bit of getting used to the way the yarn had less give to it than a 100% wool yarn would, but that was probably just because all I'd ever knit with at the time was pure wool, which I've found is often a lot more springy on its own.
That sounds awesome! I’m thinking of knitting a cozy classic raglan with my Coast! I’m knitting one right now and it’s just such a relaxing knit! I do love a basic raglan sweater ☺️

Loved that you tried out new yarn by knitting up swatches. I think podcasts are pushing/pimping very expensive yarn. This has been bothering me. XL sweaters in hand-dyed yarn equal -$180. I like that you bought the yarn and then gave us a clean review. Thanks!
No problem! Now I can’t promise that I won’t be making $180 sweaters because I am fortunate enough to be able to do that from time to time... but, at the same time, I also enjoy a good bargain on well made materials and I want EVERYONE to feel welcome to the party. So I will always strive to use materials of all price points because knitting shouldn’t be an exclusionary thing 😊
This is a game changer! I really wanted to knit a thin summer sweater for my mum but with how long she wants it, it would be close to $70 for just the yarn. I would want to see peoples finished garments and ask about pilling or memory but this looks amazing.
I actually have thought about buying the super soft cones in my favorite sports team colors for a hat and knee high socks. I'm tiny so it sounds like I'll get more than a hat and pair of socks lol.
I'm planning on trying my first sweater, not sure if knit or crochet - but having a budget friendly way to do it is really exciting. Glad I found this recommendation, great review.
I love indie dyed yarn and have quite the collection, but I have a special place in my heart for Holst Garn...particularly their Coast and Noble lines (Supersoft is a bit scratchy against my skin). I am actually knitting the Rowe Cardigan by Michelle Wang in Coast (I'm holding the yarn triple to get a Worsted gauge) and I'm loving it. I've knit some summer tanks out of Coast and they were in heavy rotation this summer.
Hi Caleb! So happy to find your podcast! I have been knitting with coast for a while now and have always been really curious about the super soft - but as you noted it’s not easy to find in the US. I love coast and how it feels when blocked, but always felt I was maybe missing out on extra softness. Thanks to your honest review I no longer feel compelled to try the super soft. I’m just about to cast on the “bright” sweater by junko okamoto with coast held with titicaca (also from holst yarn). They remind me a bit of shibui in that they give you so many different ways to combine their yarns so you can make the perfect blend for what you enjoy knitting and wearing and also keeping it affordable. I’m so grateful that “the yarnery” is actually my local yarn shop so I get to see many lines of holst garn in person. Keep up the wonderful work!!!
I currently knit the sonrae sweater out of the coast in cobalt and californian breeze. This yarn is amazing I already knited a sweater (Gogink from Marmelade / Marie Amelie Designs) in the supersoft however it feels a bit scratchy on my skin.
I enjoyed this episode a lot. I have heard people talking about this yarn before so I was interested in your review. The swatches looked lovely. I’ll be checking this out for my next yarn purchase.
Great video, nice to see some quality but affordable yarn being promoted. Just found your videos recently and really enjoying your back catalogue. Something specific to this video I was wondering was how did you go about doubling up on the yarn from the cone? With small balls I'd run from 2 balls at once but with the value of the cone I'd rather just work from one. Did you wind it into smaller balls manually? Thanks.
This was interesting... I think you got a great deal Caleb. That’s a lot of yardage! Sheepy and rustic yarns are back - you could even knit up a great colourwork sweater using these (enough for you and Brian!) or a nice Viking sweater (Arne and Carlos) in time for Christmas. Holding it double would make for a sturdier sweater and also faster knitting. Lol! ❤️ thanks for sharing your shopping shenanigans.
