It amazes me how they are able to use their tails both as balance and to vector the air they are pushing downwards t keep their heads almost perfectly in one spot in 3D space.

some birds lead the movement of their bodies with their heads first. Pigeons do it while walking, the head moves in a direction and the body follows after the head.

in the slow motion at the end you can see a shape in the feathers on the birds chest that looks like a human face. Great footage.

Birds are very fascinating, to me. Hummingbirds are incredible little biological machines. Great video, and you have a good documentary voice.

I missed the "upside down" part but did see an odd angle of what seemed to be one tumbled slightly back regaining it's balance. I imagine all flying birds do that on occasion.

I had a decent sized nest under my eaves, over my garage door. I figured I'd video tape the removal. I went at them in the AM while they were still dormant. There were only about 30 or so that I had to stomp once they hit the ground... thing is, three days later I noticed they were right back at building another nest.
    Arrrgh!
BTW, I concur... wasp stings must suck if they are anything compared to a honey bee. They sure seem like they'd be 10 times worse.

Had no idea how conservative most of California was outside of the "Fake & Gay" areas until I stayed in a small town near China Lake for a month and a half while working at the base back in 2003. Changed my outlook on the "State" of your state. Good people. Thanks for the great videos.

I haven't been stung by a wasp that I remember and the last time a bee got me I think it was 1978. Thing is, it was determined by the doctor that I was officially allergic to them at that time. Thinking back to my recent nest smashing, even though it was while they were sleeping, was pretty risky. A few did fly at me and made me run hightail it out of there. Pretty crazy indeed.

  • @Dowlphin

I guess it's natural that they're stressing out so much over that abundant food source. They gotta slow down a little. xD
Wasn't fully upside-down flight there, but slightly. I guess like helicopters when you push them to the limits, briefly. Although that was probably the most 'laid-back' hummingbird I've seen a far, haha.

Great shots and cool info too. I've been working on getting some more battles on film... I see LOTS of chase-offs, but real knock-down fights where they smack into each other are fairly rare. I hear impacts more often than I see them, and they're usually over before I can grab the camera or at least get it pointed the right direction. XD Those Black-Chinned males actually have deep purple bands on their necks right below the black "chin". Really spectacular but hard to light them up! =)

They do not fly upside down - at least not sustained..
They will fly vertical, backwards, hard banking, even corkscrew maneuvers but they just simply don't "FLY" upside down.
