S2/E5; HELP, I cannot find the harbor entrance at night of this Dutch Seaport

Lady Liselot departs from a very empty marina for a 12-hour tour. It is the end of December 2021, with beautiful weather and an almost flat sea. Very different from a few days before when the ship rolled and pitched with a NW6, only... because the journey takes so long, Henk-Jan arrives in the dark, and Scheveningen looks beautiful from the sea, BUT it is fully lit , and that makes it a hazzle to find the harbor entrance.
Be sure to watch to the end for more of this comical sailing guy.
I hope you enjoy this one, leave me a comment (I would love to hear from you) and as always, thank you for your support - much love to you all

Beautiful, but looks cold!!
Captain Henk-Jan, your Lady Liselot appears well maintained. Her condition and your skills would leave me to believe that as your passenger I would fare well. Thanks for having me aboard for this trip. 👍
Hello Bruce, thank you for those kind words. As a matter of fact, everybody who steps on board and joins me for a sail mentions that to me. As Tiger Woods once said "The more I practice the easier it looks and becomes" (I think it was him) and I practiced a lot before I invited people on board. BTW did you subscribe already? Please do, helps me a lot.

@@brucebergstresser3973 Well Bruce, we both have to thank the guys from RUclips/Google for that too. 30 years ago this would not have been possible.
Captain Henk-Jan is a good representative for the Netherlands. I hope this channel will be as popular as another's countryman..." Itchy Boots ". 🇺🇲
Yet another great video and more memories for me. I have been into SCHEVENINGEN when there was a regatta and I ended up rafting with a fishing vessel. Also I was very happy to earn that you are a real sailor, not just a motorboat man. Great stuff. Cheers Michael
The North Sea Regatta in the Whitsunday weekend? I delivered and crewed (pit) one of the racing boats for many many years. With a couple of guys we slept aboard and the cabin needed fresh air for half an hour before the rest of the crew was allowed to enter the next day.
Ey neighbour.!
Your videos are getting better and better.!
You we’re laughing like a farmer with a toothache in the port of Scheveningen. 😉
Keep up the good work.!
HAHAHA LOL GETTING THERE...
Yeah neighbour, I did not have a tootache... I laughed about my own expression. "I said 'ok', but it did not feel 'ok' at the moment".
What is the English expression for the Dutch expression: "laughing like a farmer with a toothache"? hahaha
Years ago I was in England and a mechanic had worked on my cutter. When he was finished he said "Bob is your Uncle", but I knew for sure that I did not have an uncle named Bob.
He then explained that phrase to me. In Dutch we say: "Klaar is kees",. So I guess "laughing like a farmer with a toothache" will have it's own English version also.
Oh, Was ingelogd met mijn personal account. Tell everybody in Lisse you meet about this channel!!!

Dank je Henk!
Superbedankt voor de video, Henk-Jan! I am also a former sailor who recently moved to a power boat...an old commercial fishing vessel converted to pleasure use. Dutch working boats have always fascinated me, and I have a dream of exploring the coastal and inland waters of northern Europe by boat some day. I enjoy seeing you explore aboard Lady Liselot, and love your narration explaining the local ports, the waters, and various vessels that you meet along the way. Your videos (and the words of your doctor...what if everything is possible?) are an inspiration, and I hope to be able to see your area for myself one of these days. Cheers from a distant brother who has fond appreciation for the land of my ancestors.
Wow, an old commercial fishing vessel? I looked for something like that also, but the moment I stepped on board I saw it was more difficult to sail/moor/dock/handle singlehanded, so I skipped that. Thank you for the compliment about the video's. I love to watch video's on youtube from the Seattle/Poulsbo/Gig Harbour area because I worked there ages ago and now I see al the places again and agian. What a great tool video is. Thank for your kind words, Anson, welcome aboard!
Harstikke leuk weer.

Great video. You are an expert skipper and a really nice guy. I'm really enjoying watching your videos.
Thank you!!

Hi Henk-Jan, understand your concern and agree you need to watch top-weight and cost. The yacht radar, when you get it, will do most all that the more sophisticated navigation radars can provide. Seeing the "birds=eye" view off the radar, even if only the radar is set to ship's head (rather than gyro stabilized), will allow one to point the night/day vision on a bearing and thence transfer that relative bearing (red/green) to your radar picture. I think even the basic yacht-radars offer the "guard ring" function to warn you of approaching vessels within the warning range you setup on the radar. I'm enjoying the program.
Thank you Joseph, yes the yacht radars nowadays all have all kind of warnings. Thanx for joining.
Thanks for adding subtitles for your vhf radio communications. It's interesting and educational to understand what is being said.
Great video and please keep making them.
Thanks
Hello Matt, As a jr RUclips creator, I did not pay attention to the communication, because "I understood what was said..." and sometimes I translated it 'on camera' but sometimes not. But when I read the comments I thought "just a little effort , so why not." If you were one of the people pointing it out: thanx for that. Please let me know what I can improve, to make it (even) more watchable.
Thank you, Henk-Jan, really enjoy your videos and amazing how you are handling the boat and cameras on your own
Hello Daniel, wel thank you for the compliment. I have fun producing, and really enjoy every comment.
Nice Docking
Once a mariner always a mariner I suppose!
Well, for some people 'beining in the woods' is what they are looking for. Others wanne climb every mountain. I prefer being on the water.
Thank you for taking us on your journey, you are a pleasure to watch.
Thank you, as you can tell I had fun producing it. From my intro-video you know that being on the water is important to me and I really like to share that love. Please subscribe for more!
Your visit of Den Helder brought back happy memories. I brought my sister over from the states to Germany where i was stationed and I took her all over Germany and the Netherlands. We were up in Den Helder and the fishing boats were bringing in their catch of the day and there was a "mobile" food truck and they cooked us up some of the best fish ever. She has since passed and her son scattered her ashes in Jost Van Dyke. Thanks for the memories.
Hey man, good to hear that just by sharing my trip, you think about the good memories in live. Indeed every (professional) harbour has it's fresh fish food truck. French fries and fish, but not like the 'Fish & Chips" like the English have.
Two doses in one day! When the second one loaded up I had to reach for the virtual Narcan. How excellent.
I appreciated your introduction, a glimpse into an unusual and interesting life. I must admit that I was surprised by your proffer of an existential question, and your immediate search for its answer. There is something for me to learn here, and I appreciate that. The last time I was surprised by such a query was when I was watching Steven Pressfield’s “The Legend of Bagger Vance. I find it’s a bit rare to encounter a meaningful and thoughtful reflection of your own destiny. A real life has the unexpected at every turn, and there is no Chart Plotter to keep our keel off the rocks. I look forward to finding out more about your journey. I’ll rip my Joseph Campbell off the bookshelf and get ready.
I know, as a 'dealer' one sometimes does crazy shit.
During those years I walked the beach 3 times a week. 1.5 hour per trip, hoping to find a solution for the dark clouds, Not dark thoughts, just clouds, but like heavy weather clouds as I used in the video. Non of the self-help books brought the answer so I headed for the doctor. The rest is history.
You're demolishing my belief system. I thought dutch people have boating competence build in from birth!
Sorry about that.

As Tiger Woods (I think it was him) once said "The more I practice the easier it looks and becomes" and I practiced a lot before I invited people on board.
Thanks for so generously sharing such a wonderful interesting trip!
Well Gerry, it was a pleasure as you can image. Thanks for you kind words.
Thank you, Henk-Jan, for bringing us along on your adventure. The video and narration are wonderful. Would you please share more about how you do the tasks, like where the fenders are stored and how you deploy. Even how you attached the dock lines would be interesting. Is there daily maintenance that needs to be performed? Thank you. I look forward to your next video.
To be honest, I do have a lot of footage on that, BUT I hardly ever use it in the video's because it adds another 2 minutes to the lenght. Let me think about that, how to add. I think the daily maintenance is getting automated the moment you step on board. Tas soon as a pump in the hold kicks on, I hear it uneasily and check how long it runs. When I hear ropes creak, I understand that the wind or current is increasing. When I hear something flapping, I unconsciously listen where it is, and I know if I have to take action. When I'm at anchor, other sounds come in again. When I sail, I unconsciously listen to the engines and the gearbox. When I walk on deck while cruising, I hear if all is well, and if not I have to take action.
Your right on the illumination of ports. And even boats . It’s ridiculous stupid how port entrances deluded by light pollutions.
My advice to boaters that don’t have any night experience or have night sight problems is to extended the their time at see. Or plan for a day light entre.
The lights of a port are installed during daylight and when it works the box is checked. Next. Whilst sailing in winter time in The Netherlands, it's dark between 17:00 and 08:30. Entries of ports are difficult to see.
Another great video.
Just doing my best, Ian...
Hello loved this video ,
I bought my boat Confidence a Aquabell 33 from
Den Helder a year ago 😊
Could not sail back to U.K. because weather kept letting us down
Hi there, so the boat is still in Den Helder, then or did you transport it via the road?
Henk-Jan, you just must get a India Band Navigation Radar (or better). The advantage is that it becomes a "force multiplier" in evaluating navigation/position situation. Further, you can set up "guard rings" whereby you will be alerted (alarm bell and alert light) when objects come within a certain range or (say) are on a steady bearing closing target and to aid collision avoidance. The guard ring is useful too in open ocean navigation when you need to a short rest (maybe). Cheers
From what I see Josepth, these things are huge and for professionals. I have everything Raymarine set up, and the searadar (for yachts only and a $3,300,- investement) is on my list. But perhaps I start with nightvision.
Good work and enjoyable. We Navy guys use the radar ( we call it the blind pilot) to assist in the visual challenges of all those city lights. It can always help to turn to a lower range scale ( say 2.5 nm or less) to resolve where you are in the channel. Cheers from the Southern Hemisphere. PS I'm originally from Amsterdam and I enjoy the Dutch bits.
Hello Joseph, whilst editting I though "Why did I not zoom in and just drive on the plotter?" Can not tell 6 weeks later.
A radar is on my wishlist, but perhaps a nightvision camera will do as good.

Hi! It would be interesting to occasionally see the helmsman's view ahead.
Hello Helmut, I am thinking about that extra camera. From the camera's on port and starboard one could see what we are heading for, but adding another camera with a helmsman view will add extra for sure. Thank you for bringing that up. Did you subscribe?
Yep.....you are most certainly beautifully bonkers yet equally a most accomplished mariner. Manoeuvring and mooring in the dark, first class captain. You say channel 16 for when at sea but how do you know what channel when you are coming to a port/marina?
Hello Bob, the camera's helped a lot, but just looking backwards myself helped a lot. No idea what would happen with winds of 18knts plus. ;-) Whilst sailing inland I use an (Dutch) app and that shows me the (sometimes mandatory) VHF. Most of the time you find a sign on the shore when entering the harbour telling you what VHF channel to use and in the papercharts you find it listed also. It;s part of the journey preperation to find out when and where to switch to a certain channel.

Do you have a video of S/E6? Going from Scheveningen to the Hoek of Holland!
Nope, lost all footage due to a stupid humanly error. Can you guess?
Great Video, I have an older trawler too, really like your electronic updates, do you have any videos of that?
Not yet, the channel started mid december 21 so I have some video's to produce ;-)
Another great video Henk-Jan. Also great bit of docking! Very instructional - what is that saying "slow like a pro" and you make it look very pro. I can't wait to get my own boat ready for some coastal cruising around the UK. But all in good time. When you plan your route do you need to let the destination know you will be arriving? And do you need to book a berth in the marina? I get the impression not. Take care and safe sailing.
Hello David, thank you for the nice words. IN WINTER... there is no need to inform or reserve the destination that you are coming. The last 2, 3 years IN SUMMER it's is done more often. The Islands you see in my video;'s even have an online board to inform you if there is any room left. They all dock alongside.
@@MVLadyLiselot thanks. That makes sense. The Dutch coast seems to be well organised with lots of places to explore.
Love the text you use then talking to the harbor master, that's new. Does the red light help with your night vision.
What text do you mean?
Yes, perhaps you see it used at night in trucks also. The red light gives me enough 'light' to walk around savely but does not blind me. I sailed and recorded my journey without editting. And whilst editting I saw I should have added a (red) light on my face so that the viewer would recognize me.
Another interesting one. Few things: Why do you called the speed as Km/hr instead of knots? Also are there no leading lights or bearings at the harbour entrance? Thumbs up for your berthing skill.
Thank you for joining, because I drive Lady Liselot 95% of the time on inland canals, we in The Netherlands use km/h, so whilst being at sea I still use that one. Sailors (those with sails...) on the otherhand often talk about knots. But since Lady liselot is a full displacement boat, "10km/h" sounds better than "5 knots". ;-)
Yes, Scheveningen Harbour has two enormous leading lights. These where blinding me, and I also could have zoomed in on the chartplotter to drive her 'blind', 8 weeks afterwards I have no idea why I did not.
Scheveningen..to pronounce that is a Dutch shibboleth. You make it sound effortless. When I try it there is a lot of throat clearing going on
Yes, David, the way we pronounce a 'g' or a 'ch' in Dutch reminds many of the sounds you make after a night out. ;-) If you do: stop smoking will help the pronouncation.
An informative trip Henk-Jan! When you arrived Scheveningen the marina looked very crowded. Did you raft Lady Liselot to another boat?
Yes Dan, The BW footage on the end is from going astern and I moored third in line along side a large yacht. The sailboat you see was docked along side the jetty and I parked 90 degrees on her. The next morning the owner of that sailboat arrived and afraid they could not leave. Well it was easy to drive Lady Liselot out so they could leave, and I could get back again.
Thanks for the explanation, Henk-Jan! “What if everything is possible, where do you wake up tomorrow?” Of course your answer to your doctor’s question had to be, “On a boat.” Acting on your passion and sharing it with others is a gift. Thank you!
Do you alternate from one engine to another to keep the engine hrs roughly equal?
Hi Paul, adding a 2nd engine cost 100% fuel burn (at least 10liter @ € 1.85/liter as I write this) per hour extra, but only giving 25% more speed. So the calculation is simple. I only use two engines for manouvring. I run them seperately to keep the running hours in balance.
Thanks for great video! A couple of questions…Using a one engine at time, a not running engine free wheeling correct? I assume you change engine every couple hours to prevent over heat on Shaft bearing.Does it affect auto pilot operation? I am thinking of starting to drive my 44’ Ferreti that way while at low speeds but not sure about handling while on auto pilot and is it good for shaft coupling.
Hi there! The thing is: Adding a 2nd engine cost 100% fuel burn (at least 10liter @ € 1.85/liter as I write this) per hour extra,
but only giving 25% more speed. So the calculation is simple. I only use two engines for maneuvring near bridges and in port.
I run them seperately to keep the running hours in balance and no it has notting to do with over heat.
When running the starboard engine only (port switch off completely), ofcourse the boat heads to port (prop working), so I then give 5 - 6 degrees starboard. Also the auto pilot does that, because it want to hold the course programmed.
Have a look at my other video: It starts the moment I only use the startbord engine. A couple of moments later I show the chartplotter. On top you see a "5 degrees S" rudder: ruclips.net/video/XGWf_ddehBw/видео.html
I see I used my private account to answer. ;-)
Hi, why do you talk about km/h and not knots when you talk about the boat speed?
Because on all rivers and canals on the mainland Europe, km/h is default. All signs are in km/h. The moment you go to sea it changes to knts.
Thank you for sharing! By the way: is it better to use 1 engine and more rpm or both engines but less rpm?
Hello Thomas, I do not think it's a matter of "better" it's a matter of 'cheap sailing'. hahaha Adding a 2nd engine cost 100% fuel burn (at least 10liter @ € 1.85/liter as I write this) per hour, onliy giving 25% more speed. So the calculation is simple. I only use two engines for manouvring. BTW: please subscribe!
Great videos Henk Jan. one question, you seem to use 1 engine a lot, does this cause any issues at all? Thanks SnG.

@@MVLadyLiselot Thanks Henk-Jen for your time to reply, it is appreciated! I have to say, I’m enjoying your content, and it’s bringing Holland and the Netherlands into some planning for a retirement dream for us. Keep the vids coming, you’re a delight 👍
Perhaps you might consider some active stabilisers at some stage to make open sea passages more feasible?
Stabilizers would be great. They were on my wishlist, but the boats I visited who had stabilizers had another minor: not enough headroom (I am 1,92m) , so I had to walk with my head down, and I just needed to buy a boat to keep my head up! Adding stabilizers will cost an extra € 80,000.- and is that investement worth the boat? Perhaps with 100,000 subscribers I earn a dime or two and do not care about that cost, David. (Or perhaps an account on Patreon?)
would you consider taking aboard a deckie from Australia, to enjoy your travels ??? maybe just fund the airline tickets in the first instance, .. Frank
For 2 seconds I considered chartering, but I am to much of an einzelgänger to have people on board.
@@MVLadyLiselot had to try lol, could have made you coffee so you wouldn't have to wait 45 minutes ;)
you have a track line on your chartplotter save it and follov it back to the harbor ! easy
That would have worked if I had been there with this boat/plotter. This was the first time with this boat.
ok i understand ! you can also use autoguidance on your plotter seek up the harbor on the chart put your finger on the place you want to go to and select autoguidance and you get a line from your boat to the harbor@@MVLadyLiselot
i forgot to say that this option is on a garmin touch screen chartplotter
Sorry ,S2/E6?
No worries, I understood. Did you know you can edit your own comments? Select that one and press on the dots and choose edit
we talk to ourselves at any age, the older you get the more sense you talk, that's my excuse, with no leading lights at the harbour entrance that was a good call
Hello John, you speak from experience I suppose? ;-) Scheveningen Harbour has two enormous leading lights. These where blinding me, and I also could have zoomed in on the chartplotter to drive her 'blind', 8 weeks afterwards I have no idea why I did not. I trusted (to much?) on my own view.
Do you make more money for the channel when you switch on the red lights?
Y E S, my rate is boosting, the moment I switch on the red light.
I lived in Amsterdam for years (world famous for the red light district) and I always laughed about the people (tourists) walking around in amazement in that area.
Why don't you weer
Ernst?
Another great video, it gets 9.5 stars out of 10. You lost a half point for your attempt at singing at the beginning.
WHATT???? Well thank you for your honesty. To my great regret, the jury of a singing competition that I participated in a long time ago, advised me to look for a different meaning in my life. As you can see I succeeded, but sometimes I still have an uncontrollable urge to sing.
Die vraag wordt veel gesteld, dus ik heb een Engels antwoord: adding a 2nd engine cost 100% fuel burn, but only gives 25% more speed. I use two engines when maneuvring, but if it is not necessary, I switch one of them off.
@@MVLadyLiselot bedankt voor je antwoord en uitleg.
