I remember when I was 12 and my parents took me backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. I got to know Johnny Russell and Jim Ed Brown for years. They were 2 of the truest men. I miss them both as they left us for awhile. I remember just about every Saturday night Johnny Russell closed out the Opry with that song. So it brings back sweet memories for me as I'm at this point 43.
Jim Ed died at age 81, singing right up till the end. As a young man with The Browns he had this pure, clean smooth pretty sounding voice, at the end of his career his voice was a bit more crackly, but his phrasing and tonality was beautiful and heartfelt. Truly a great singer for more than a 60 career.
As a kid, I'd see Jim Ed on various music shows and thought he was the smoothest man out there with a slick voice and slick hair. Imagine my shock, at about 8 yrs old when we went to a theater in an amusement park (The Opry at Opryland) and there was Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius!! I'll never forget it. I saw Helen again, in the late 80's when she starred in a theater production of "Annie Get your Gun," with Dave Sugar.
This is a perfect example to me of what country music is and should always be. Simply the truth and facts of being alive and everyone can relate to that. Today's "country" music has none of that and so pales in comparison if they're even comparable which I don't think they are. From a 45+ year country music fan btw.
Thanks for the reaction, I hadn't heard this before, but I've listened to Jim for years. You should give his songs "3 Bells" and "Pop a Top" a listen. He had a great voice.
Jim Ed was big back in the day! We lost Jim Ed several years ago. And Johnny Russell is another one of those good ole Mississippi boys. Now THIS is country music.
I saw Jim Ed perform when I was a kid and the only song I remember as a kid was "Pop A Top Again" but this song written by Johnny was amazingly sung by Jim, beautiful song.
Jim Ed was a treasure. He and his sisters were “ The Browns “ they had many classic songs . “ Three Bells “ is probably the most well known . I would like to request “ I Heard the Bluebird Sing “ by the Browns . It’s a beautiful song , and my aunt and uncle used to sing it . It is unusual in that it doesn’t have a chorus . Thanks for what you do .😎
Johnny Russell who wrote this song " Ain't you even gonna cry" was who JimEd was visiting in the hospital & Johnny asked JimEd if he was gonna sing Johnny's song. That was the story as JimEd explained. Plus Johnny wrote this a few yrs ago, his big hit was " White socks & Blue Ribbon beer" now that's a fun song. Another fun song was by Jìm Stafford was "Swamp Witch" if you do a reaction to this great song pick the song clip that's 4:13 long & has a woman holding a lantern in the swamp near a cabin, he also did Spìders & Snakes. Stafford was classically trained but loved country music & fun songs. Please consider White Socks & Swamp Witch for reaction video's. Thanks for your time
There are so many great country songs as we know but there are a few that just clutches your heart when you here them, this is one of the many songs that Johnny Russell, had a great song writer and singer so much of the traditional country music we know has been thrown aside for what else profit, the music of today has no meaning when it's done it all sounds the same it has no soul to it no story to draw you in and hold you, just one opinion thanks for your ear complain too, GREAT SONG WRITTEN BY JOHNNY RUSSELL, AND A GREAT REACTION THANKS BRIAN, AND DON, GREAT JOB
This song always gets to me Don. I was at work on break and had to pause it till I got home. Johnny Russell also wrote the big hit act naturally by the Beatles. You should react to Johnny's version. Jim Ed is in the country music hall of fame 3 times
Great song. He's always had a good voice. The decorations on the set was because they were doing a Hee Haw tribute show. Most of the surviving regulars from the Hee Haw show were there.
Jim Ed was a true Country Gentleman. My 2 favorite songs of his are hidden Gems most people don't know "Angel's Dolly" and "Groundhog". Don, since you don't know who Johnny Russell was, you should react to one of his songs. A great singer himself, he wrote songs for people like Buck Owens and Ringo Starr. One of his best was, Act Naturally.
You can pick any song, singing solo, with his sisters or his duets with Helen Cornelius. All are good. Love the 3 bells with his sisters & my favorite with Helen "l Don't Wonna Have to Marry You" Saw Jim Ed in concert once. To bad, Helen wasn't there. That would of been great.
You did the 3 Bells with his sisters as The Browns. Jim Ed Brown had 3 careers with is sisters, as a duet with Helen Cornelius, and solo. You have him here maybe 10 years ago. Never dropped a note. Maybe compare with Jim Reeves, Ray Price.
Don's right. At the very beginning he sounds a lot like George Jones. This is silly but when you said that I asked out loud, did George Jones ever record it? as if we were in the same room!

Jim Ed Brown is a new artist to me! All I can say is where have I been?!!!
You should go down that rabbit hole you won't regret it

I love the song and my first time hearing it. But the talent that Jim Ed Brown had was amazing to see.
oh love this song
There was a time that I could not get enough of Jin Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius. Still love to hear them. Together or solo.

I remember the Browns when I was about 8. Jim's voice has held up better than most. One I always thought was fun was I Was Looking Back To See.

Love this 😢
The Browns Three Bells one of my fathers favorites.
My favorite is the Old Lamplighter. What an incredible song and story.
Great song. He's always had a good voice. The decorations on the set was because they were doing a Hee Haw tribute show. Most of the surviving regulars from the Hee Haw show were there.

The guy he talked about was Johnny Russel another Opry Star .

You've done Pop a Top by Alan Jackson. Jim Ed did it in the 70s I believe.
Jim Ed just had a smooth perfectransition baritone.

React to Cory Marks “Outlaws and Outsiders “
Great lyrics to a good song; and poignant review.
