Solo Beatles Songs Written Pre-Breakup

  • After the Beatle's breakup, each ex-Beatle went on to achieve success with hits like Imagine, My Sweet Lord, and Band on the Run. But what you might not know is that many of the songs that appear in their first two albums were actually written while the Beatles were still together-some of them years before the breakup.
This is my deep dive into the lesser-known gems of The Beatles' catalog; a fascinating look at the individual creative sparks that flared up before they went their separate ways.

John invited George to play on "O My Love"...George just walked in, plucked a guitar off the wall and tuned it, and began quietly jamming as John played piano and sang.

George was the smart one here. He held on to all these great tracks and put most of them on All Things Must Pass. Nothing is going to stop a good song, and I'm guessing he subconsciously figured if the band wasn't going to put them out then he would do it himself.

The Beatles had some great songs in the works, or stewing around, that by early 1970 they had probably enough material for two more solid albums. Isn't It A Pity is a great song, but to be honest, seems to offer a different vibe from the track listings for Revolver and Sgt. Pepper. Would have been great on the White Album to be honest. Now I don't know what condition or level of completion the song was at by May of 1968 (say like Jealous Guy on the Escher demos)?
Was "It Don't Come Easy" written at the end of the Beatles run? Thought I heard that RIngo had a conception of it around 1968, and that maybe George then came in to help, around 1969 (or on into some time in 1970s?)?

    • @syater
      @syater 3 месяца назад +5

A recording exists of "It Don't Come Easy" with what sounds like the same instrumental backing tracks, same guitar solo, but with George Harrison singing the entire song. Plus, in the second half of the song the backing singers sing 'Hare Krishna.' It makes me wonder if George may have written the song and simply gave credit to Ringo. It's clear George helped Ringo with 'Octopus's Garden.'

The All Things Must Pass album was the biggest selling former Beatles solo album. Notice from the video that most of the tracks from All Things Must Pass were written before the breakup.
Before the release of Abbey Road, John proposed a formula for their next album - that he, Harrison and McCartney bring in four songs each, and Ringo contribute two.
Paul replied, “I thought until this album that George’s songs weren’t that good,”.
George replied, “people have liked my songs.”
George knew he had to leave the Beatles and go solo to get his songs recorded.
John told Paul about the problem. John said his regret about his past songs is that he became so frightened that he allowed Paul to take the songs somewhere that John didn’t want.
John said he believed his only chance (for more control of his songs) was to let George take over.
Of course that did not happen. Paul told John that he had once been the boss. And now Paul was the second boss. Paul was not going to let go of that as long as the Beatles stayed together.

Art Of Dying was written in 1966 but didn't make it to Revolver due to having a similar chord progression to Eleanor Rigby. I don't know which one came first, but Isn't It A Pity was also written around the same time and it has some similarities to Hey Jude which would be written and released 2 years later. There's also Sour Milk Sea which was never officially released by George or The Beatles (aside from on the deluxe editions of The White Album and All Things Must Pass in demo form) but was released by Jackie Lomax (and has since been recorded and released by my band The Quagaars....well I've got to get a plug in somewhere lol) which uses the phrase "Get Back" quite a lot, the a year later, Paul writes Get Back. Coincidence? Probably...but still interesting none the less. It is interesting to think though that perhaps in an alternate universe, that The Beatles released Art Of Dying instead of Eleanor Rigby or Isn't It A Pity instead of Hey Jude or Sour Milk Sea instead of Get Back.

I presume Lennon and McCartney thought ‘Isn’t it a pity?’ was just too basic a song. It is just 3 chords played over and over again. D E G and back to D. You can see why John and Paul would have raised an eyebrow at that. And before anyone mentions Johns Tomorrow never knows was only one chord- it had its nuances and enough changes to make it a classic.

The Harrison songs George presented to the band that were rejected often seemed to have at least some criticism of John and Paul or they possibly perceived that and may have been rejected partially because of it.
Only A Northern Song was one that was released, albeit on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack as one of the 'throw away' tracks.

Isn't It A Pity in 1966 was nick named Taxman part 2. It was claimed to sound almost the same. I think the early way he had the song yet was probably not polished enough yet. If they heard it before, in 66 and/or 67 you can tell it was performed differently in 69 during the Get Back sessions. They didn't seem totally familliar with the song until George reminded that it was from 66, Taxman part 2.

Isn't it a Pity is such a magnificent song. But I can see why Martin, John and Paul didn't want it on one of their records. It's just too cuttingly deep about the truth of the human condition. Elinor Rigby was probably their closest song in emotional tone to Isn't it a Pity. Still, Isn't it a Pity cuts way deeper than that. And way deeper than She's Leaving Home, which is about a girl who left home because she wasn't having any fun.
I wonder if Paul ever considered the idea that "she" may be leaving home because she wasn't getting any love from her parents. And she finally found someone who could give her that much need love - from this "man from the motor trade." Having grown up in a love-starved household with emotionally damaged parents myself, I always though this would have been a more powerful message in the song.
Back to Isn't it a Pity. A PERFECT George album song. I'm glad they passed on it so George could get all the glory for himself! LOL

Interesting. I've always heard She's Leaving Home as about a girl who was not able to be herself at home, including not being loved and related to by her parents, and not just about having fun. But when a person can live more as their true self they will generally have more fun as well.

"Fun is the one thing that money can't buy." That line always bugged me too. If you ask a hundred people: What's the one thing money can't buy? The majority are going to say happiness. It's so true that it's become a cliché to say so. The next most popular answer would surely be love. I doubt if fun would even make the list - unless Paul was part of the survey.

I disagree with the comment that there is not a bad track on Sgt Pepper. Fixing a Hole & When I'm 64 were weak, and should have been kept off the final running order. Had The Beatles and George Martin stood their ground, then the inclusion of Penny Lane & Strawberry Fields Forever would have made Sgt Pepper more of a landmark album than it deserves today.
