I don’t think it’s simply about boredom, or else it wouldn’t be a classic. It’s about childish expectations and fears going up against cold experience, yet remaining open to it all: “Oh, no, not me. I’m not ready for that final disappointment.”
Narrator remains open to life to the bitter end. Lieber and Stoller +Peggy Lee= heaven.

    Peggy Lee
From North Dakota. Sang in a big band. Lee recorded over 1,100 masters and composed over 270 songs.
Lee created a sophisticated persona, writing music for films, acting, and recording conceptual record albums combining poetry and music.
SHE ISN'T THE ORIGINAL SINGER OF FEVER!
She did her version of Fever sung by Little Willie John, written by Eddie Cooley and John Davenport & added a line. ("Romeo loved Juliet", "Captain Smith and Pocahontas")
Her version is what many think of as the most popular.
Paul McCartney (Beatles fame) wrote a song for her.
Lee starred opposite Danny Thomas in The Jazz Singer (1952), a remake of the Al Jolson film, The Jazz Singer (1927). She played an alcoholic blues singer in Pete Kelly's Blues (1955), for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Lee provided speaking and singing voices for several characters in the Disney movie Lady and the Tramp (1955), playing the human Darling, the dog Peg, and the two Siamese cats, Si and Am. She also co-wrote, with Sonny Burke all of the original songs for the film, including "He's A Tramp", "Bella Notte", "La La Lu", "The Siamese Cat Song", and "Peace on Earth".
In 1987, when Lady and the Tramp was released to VHS, Lee sought performance and song royalties on the video sales. When Disney refused to pay, she filed a lawsuit in 1988. After a prolonged legal battle, in 1992, Lee was awarded $2.3 million for breach of contract, plus $500,000 for unjust enrichment, $600,000 for illegal use of Lee's voice and $400,000 for the use of her name.

Peggy Lee's real name was Norma Egstrom. She grew up about 20 miles from my Dad's home town. My father was a young jazz musician in a regional band in the late 1930's. Peggy Lee was the vocalist in the band, before she hit the "big time." Years later, when he would see Peggy Lee on television, he would say, "There's Norma." She was a great jazz singer. Note that her only accompaniment here was bass and drums.

Yeah, a lot of covers over the years... how can there not be with something like this? ;) But also yeah, the way others do it are to a different and more modern cadence. This re-inspires me to learn it back her way... can't touch the original, but I love the more jazzy, pause-before stepping of the lines....

Peggy Lee, mainly a jazz singer, was more an artist for our parents when we were growing up in the '60s. (I'm 67 and she was an artist for my parents.) But she had one hit that was on the top 40 charts for our generation, and that was a song called "Is That All There Is." Might be worth a listen. This one, "Fever," was a chart hit back in the '50s, I believe. I can't say for sure if she was the first to record "Fever," but she might have been, although I don't believe she wrote it. It's been covered a number of times by many of her generation's artists. There's also one rock 'n roll version of it that was a fairly big hit in about 1966 by the group The McCoys, who also had a big hit called "Hang On Sloopy." The McCoys' lead singer, Rick Derringer, would go on to have a solo hit in the '70s called "Rock 'n Roll Hoochie Koo." You'd have fun with all those. By the way, personally, my favorite version of Fever, by far, is by Sarah Vaughan, another jazz singer of my parents' generation. Sarah Vaughan (aka "Sassy") is an artist you should definitely check out. Look for her live performance of "Misty." Her original version of "Fever" is, I think, the best one of that song. I also like the dance remix that was made of it about ten years ago. Kinda made it a whole new song with a whole new, modern vibe.

Would love to hear Angelina Jordan do a cover of this. Her sultry voice would be perfect!

Jim Frederick you think a little kid is sultry?

@@Mainecoonlady. Angelina has any voice she wants. Anyone who can sing Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone etc. can turn on sultry at will.
