- Executive Outcomes, a South Africa mercenary company, changed the entire field in the business of mercenaries and how they operate
Creating a business model that is still emulated by modern mercenary groups today.
Their sophistication and ability to diversify the business are some of the reasons they succeeded where others failed.
Their military expertise and success was unquestioned. It was the only private company that fielded an integrated, battalion-size force ending conflicts where UN peacekeepers failed.
EO was so efficient they freaked out governments all over the world.
exactly
Eeben Barlow, the founder of EO, has/had a blog. Worth reading.
@starscreamm Executive Outcomes. An early PMC and a bit of an outlier. Lots of smears leveled at them, but all turned out to be bullshit.
@starscreamm Abbreviation for Executive Outcomes 👍🏾
@@bandit6272 Not really, their activities in Sierra Leone were highly suspicious, especially the way they prioritised protecting private diamond mines over government assets (their supposed clients)
Executive outcomes just sounds so cool and they seem like the people you hire to get a job done.
Sounds corporate, but executive = an adjective attributing executions to a noun. Cold af
@@Ozymandias83. Organisations like that need an ambiguous sounding company name to fly under the radar. I worked for GEO, which stands for Global Expertise in Outsourcing, a much softer name than Australasian Correctional Management which is what they were named previously.
They're cold bastards, they have a terrible reputation for undermining the states they work for and prioritising the protection of private assets over their government clients
@@AeneasGemini well from my experience, the private clients often pay way more. Not to mention the networking it gets you.
Not to mention governments are generally the scumiest of scum
@@sebleonard8273 God, the amount of contacts and acquaintances my father had from his days as a merc allowed him to start up and successfully make a business company. Felt really weird to see several guys with different nationalities call or visit him every week or so.
Huh, seems that my time in DynCorp and the Akademi might be useful in the future
It seems to me that each time the unit was asked to withdraw in favour of UN Peacekeepers. ...it's simply because they were in conflict with Western interests....! I must applaud them for their wittineness ....seen in securing various lucrative deals....☺
That and because relying on a bunch of white South Africans and Rhodesians is unfashionable nowadays......
If EO was in charge of Africa today Africa would be free and prosperous right now ,
@@jamesr792 there are places where it is taboo to even mention Rhodesia, you run the risk of being called a naZi, white supremacist and imperialist devil... If only people knew what Rhodesia really meant, it sure had its flaws, but together with SA was a beam of hope for the African people.

IsaYAH 18:7 In that time shall the present be brought unto יְהֹוָה of hosts of a people scattered and peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have spoiled, to the place of the name of יְהֹוָה of hosts, the mount Zion. Openbaring 22:21 Die Genade van Pele Joez, EL Gibbor, Abi Ad, Sar Shalom, ImmanuEL ( wat as dit vertaal word beteken, ELoheem met ons ) sy met julle almal! Amen. NS: GOTT mit uns!
Dad worked security for a Company in the UK, private agency that secured and transferred VIP's, foreign dignitaries, bounced Annabels Club etc.. couple of former Executive Outcomes guys among them, couple of Bushwars veterans.. really genuinely nice guys, great stories round the dinner table!
Interesting times...
Basically Executive Outcomes would come in at the behest of nations embroiled in civil wars and desperate for help. EO would save those governments, train their troops and develop resources. But then then the corrupt UN would demand they get kicked out and then civil war would break out again. The UN is a bane to African countries.
Ex outcomes
Are what every single pmc wants to be
No doubt
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Considering their reputation as being largely distrusted, it's not a company most PMC's envy
@@AeneasGemini i.e Blackwater now that's a company that not only failed in there objectives but also committed mass crimes etc vs ex outcomes that actually accomplished the intended mission.
So try again
@@slymarbo4046 Blackwater didn't commit mass crimes or fail in their objectives. They were contracted by the US Department of State and followed directions from said department. As with EO, they succeeded so well that they made a name for themselves.

A long time ago, I was in Burma. My friends and I were working for the local government. They were trying to buy the loyalty of tribal leaders by bribing them with precious stones. But their caravans were being raided in a forest north of Rangoon by a bandit. So, we went looking for the stones. But in six months, we never met anybody who traded with him. The Magazine Soldier of Fortune had articles about Sandline inc. and Executive Outcomes back in the days.
Both Companies couldn't compete with the prices offered in the Afghan war and Iraq war. America became the highest paying company for Mercenaries aka Military Contractor's dispatching them to Iraq & Afghanistan.
So after decolonization, world powers didn't want to directly intervene in the problems that arose as a result of the ensuing power vacuums, only providing aid as part of proxy wars during the Cold War just to cut off aid again when the Iron Curtain fell.
Paramilitary groups now armed with Soviet weapons were free to seize power for their leaders du jour, and the UN, fielding strongly-worded letters and peacekeepers who aren't allowed to fight, were unable to settle the instability.
Yet somehow it's morally reprehensible for soldiers to fight for profit on behalf of legitimate governments when the US and USSR had in the last decades been fighting over oil fields and mines and whose meddling in African affairs set the stage for all of this instability. That's a 25 megaton double standard.
"25 megaton double standard" thats a good one, i might have to borrow it
After " decolonization " soft power took over .
It seems the oil fields and mines were secured .
EO should make a deal with a small african country. Security, Training, Share of profits and brokering of international investments for providing a permanent base with 99 years lease. Part of the deal could also be the improvement of the local infrastructure (major roads, deep water port, airfields, fuel storages). It would be to the benefit of everyone. No need for a coup.
It would be nice if you could ad some subtitles. Nice video 👍

Wow, I am surprised at how widespread the use of mercenaries is. I expected it to be far more niche honestly
Africa would thrive with them instead of full fledge armies. Armies are more expensive.
Also, a death of a soldier is a "tragedy" at least as far as western governments are concerned. The death of a mercenary is simply one less paycheck to write.
@@provenancemachining It's still a tragedy to their families and especially to those who fought with them.

I had the honour of knowing Rafał Gan-Ganowicz, who as orphan teenager fled communist-occupied Poland after WW2 and then participated in several wars in Africa as a mercenary, however his motivation wasn't material. By participating in wars against communists, he waged his private war against the ideology that ruined what was left of his childhood and enslaved his country. He came back to Poland in late 1990s and died in 2002. He wrote a book "Kondotierzy" ("Condottieres") where he focused on his experiences from his mercenary years.
I remember watching documentaries on Executive Outcomes where they shot up open air markets in Angola from helicopters and overpowered the rebels in Papua New Guinea to the point the local government had to stop using them since the rebels and government were relatives so the casualties were too controversial. This documentary doesn’t mention why their human rights abuses led to the international community pressuring them to disband.
I was left wondering why was there always 'international pressure' to terminate their contract.

I wonder if this company will make a comeback? And what is the best PMCs today?
Probably Triple Canopy will try to acquire them. PMCs are supposed to be independent. Best PMC today is debatable as Western PMCs mostly engage in intelligence gathering, logistics and advising in training and security consultations. Modern PMCs rarely engage in direct combat.
Something that is overlooked in this video is that companies like Executive outcomes are basically shell companies. They make it easier for mercenaries and soldier of fortune to do business. They aren't like the PMC's working in Iraq or Afghanistan.
