Im using an SLM monomax and waiting for this burr set. With down to 250rpm and after 10+ kg burr seasonin it provides quite good result. It required a lot of testing, seasoning to get here. Out of the box it was very very bad - my comandante brews in blind cupping were beating kafatek brews - and I had to grind very coarse or else my brews slowed down to 5-6minutes and didnt taste right. But with time and adjustments in brew method (less agitation, slower poors) + cafec light roast paper I could achieve great results. And with seasoning fines in ground coffee and astringency in brews decreased, while clarity has greatly improved.
I'd be very interested in hearing what you'd recommend for a mid range filter coffee grinder. Maybe something in the $500-600 range thst will meet your standards for filter coffee. There isn't a lot of info on high end filter grinders out there. The best grinder excluding the price I just gave which gets recommended often is the Baratza Forte.
@@michael_j_fabian ah okay. In your grinder comparison video I believe you noted that the Ode provided more acidity but didn't say much else about it. Any notable differences between the Vario and Forte in the cup? Is the Forte a bit step up from the Vario in your opinion? I've always been curious and considered getting one of the two.
+1 on the mid range filter grinder. I will typically make 1-2 cups a day and I have been debating the ode (which gets mixed reviews), the forte, or a hand grinder
I’m very into filter coffee. I’m only using a Lido hand grinder currently. But I do have a mazzer major with the ZM 151 G ‘low fines filter burr” and the coffee I’ve brewed with it is definitely in another ballpark than the lido. I’ve got my eye on, and am saving for an APEX. I like to hand grind 🤷🏻♂️
I'm curious if Dennis alluded to in-house Conical burr sets, with or without different characteristics like the 3(?) current Shuriken offerings for the Max. My MC4 is due in anyday and just curious what the possibilities could be. Another great video Mike, thanks.
Having tested MC4 and Flat Max with SW burrs, I would be very interested to know how do you compare them. I preordered Max with SW for the bach of Q1 2022, but then I saw your video on MC4. I am only interested in espresso based drinks, medium roast with occasional trips to medimum/light or medium/darkish beans... Did I make a mistake? Who knows :)
Michael, do you have any recommendations for a filter coffee burr set at 64-65mm? The Mahlkonig GuaLab 65/Kenia burrs seem interesting. The Fiorenzato F4 Filter burrs also seem like an interesting option at a much lower price point.
Do you have an impression on 1Zpresso grinders, like the KPlus which is supposed to perform better than the Commandante? It sort of feels like they've copied some things but have also done some innovation in their own. I remember you saying you like the Commandante and I'm interested in getting a filter only hand grinder to go with my Kinu M47 for espresso.
I'm not Michael but I can weigh in. The K Plus is not better than the C40 for filter coffee in the style where you want the tightest distribution and lowest fines to push the extraction of your filter coffee. The K Plus burr has a wider distribution than the JX burr set. This is intentional and in my opinion a superior execution of what Kinu wanted to do with their Pour over burrset (frankly lousy). That is to say the K Plus burr works best with home brewers unfamiliar with pushing extraction or perhaps roasts that are better at lower EYs. A lot of drippers are capped too at a max EY depending on technique/recipe so the K Plus will offer you higher complexity at those extractions. The 1Zpresso grinders I'd argue are competitive to even better than the C40 would be the JS and Zp6 grinders. They share the same burr set, the latter just has an ever so slightly better execution.
@@m.andre824 thanks for replying! The JS and ZP6 are pretty hard to get though, right? I'd consider getting a Comandante, but I have a Kinu M47 and I really like the magnetic catch cup. I hadn't really considered the K-Plus until April Coffee gave it such high praise. Since then, I've been looking for more opinions. Thanks for yours!
@@randyrose6625 I had a hard time making the purchase but eventually realized we had a distant family friend in Taiwan so I had their help making the purchase from Shopee Taiwan. I found out OE had their grinders made in Taiwan as well so I had an Apex shipped straight from their factory too. I'd say for those availability issues, the C40, is sadly still worth the price. If you can get a JS with shipping say below $200-$220. I'd still pick it personally!
@@m.andre824 was it just a translation issue to get the grinder or were there shipping restrictions, etc? And when you say it has the same burr set as the comandante, is it literally the same or more inspired by? I might dig a little deeper into how I might procure one of them.
@@randyrose6625 To order in Shopee Taiwan, you need a Taiwan address, a Taiwan contact number, and a Taiwan bank account/credit card. It does not have the same burr set as the Comandante. The Zp6 and JS produce a similar profile to the C40 but with less fines and also less boulders, just a slightly tighter distribution of the C40. The distributions of the Zp6 and JS are near identical. The distribution of the JS and C40 are similar but with a slightly wider gap. The C40 and Kinu M47 by comparison have EXTREMELY different distributions.
Stick to the high end kit for your no tent. There are more than enough IKEA vs Trader Joe’s shootouts type channels for that content. Sure there’s larger audiences/views but the high end has very little content. Nothing wrong with that-great starting point for less experienced people or People who can’t/won’t spend $5K-30K on their kit at home. Thx again. And no you didn’t talk me into removing my burr set in my MAX, lol I’d destroy it. Fantastic content thanks!! Eric I have a Sanremo Opera 2.0 at home if you ever want to come play with coffees!
Great video and like you I am a brewer at home...I am in the market for a serious grinder upgrade (from a Baratza Encore) but completely lost at the moment....I am looking for the same results as you and willing to invest so if you are anyone here can point me in the right direction...dedicated brew grinder, powered not hand grinder! Thanks and keep up the good work👍🏻

I'm interested in your pourover workflow. I'm fairly new to brewing and am somewhat confused with the variety of blooming times or pouring windows.

Think the Vario & Forté are a high bar to clear. I think the ode is a fantastic tool to level the playing field a bit with

I don’t understand, what’s the design philosophy behind filter burrs? What is different?
Great review as always

Yes. It hardly seems fair to fault the Kafatek coarse burrs by comparing them to burrs made of Unobtanium.
just use the ssp clones?
