I am a marine biologist, my particular study area is hermit crabs. Even though what I've seen here is in its infancy, I can see that this process will revolutionize the methods of study in my field. Congratulations, what you have done here will create a magnum leap in many areas of science. I'm up set because I am an older person (70s) and I won't get to see the full score of your work.
did this years ago, before i got my blender. A 120° or 90° line head for the laser helps ebay has them and you can attach it to a small motrised webcam or similiar mount and they you can scan it up and doen in a more controlled repeative process. The stand you attach the object to if made to spin and with a 360° protractor glue to it helps to make regular repeatable rotatiosn so alignment is easier. good video
flat bed scanning method really does work i dont see why i would get thumbs down scan all sides for that all you do is cut the plane silhouette weld the edges of each mesh with non-unform scale and wella model complete ,another alternative if your 3d software support displacement channel (grey scale) hight maps you could morph the surface of the rebuild shape using the uv wrap
Hey there Gigafide! ;) I just wanted to let you know that I started watching your videos in 2009 and you literally are the reason I am in the career I'm in today. Ever since watching this video I wanted to go into the 3D scanning industry (the film side.. I always knew I wanted to be in film) But I remember this video every day as if a I watched it yesterday. Any way, long story short I am now working in London as a 3D scanning technician on some big HollyWood films and I am living the life I always wanted to since watching this 9 years ago. (Just saw now that its exactly 9 years ago lol) Thank you for all your videos over the years! You are an amazing inspiration to millions! Keep up the great videos! Thanks David A veteran Tinkernerd (Or back then, a Giganerd? lol)
@amoliski they make clay models then draw lines so the computer can pick up the depth easier then use a scanner then use the computer, so your right!!! Although some people just make 3d models on pcs it's easier to make it the other way, because you can see the finished product properly then alter it easily.
alternative is get some white paint and coat the object you want to scan in a dark room leave the scanner lid open and scan will give you a decal elevation map aka relief map (hight map software required) , of course you should maybe use a washable paint on the object so you can photo ambient and diffuse colours and restore object to normal state lol
@RapSoul1988 You just need a "Line laser" they are not that expensive because its just an additional Lens in the laser itself. If your laser is too weak, you got too much light. The darker your room, the better for the scan itself. Then for grabbing the texture turn the lights on again,.
I know this video was made 3 years ago. This is now possible to scan/print accurate with Makerbot 3d replicator and 3d Digitizer ( Scanner). Look how far we have come in 3 years.
No actually, it's more than that. RUclips stops at 300-310 when there's alot of views at once when the video is first uploaded for some reason. Yea, he's pretty awesome too :P
i think the you can automate the scanning procedure with 2 motors one for linear motion and one for circular so that we can make it more accurate with arduino based design. Simple easy and some what cheap.
Off the top of my head, no. However there are methods of running windows programs on linux. It's downloadable off the linux/appstore/thing and it's free. Look it up, it's called Wine. It has a fairly decent compatibility with windows programs for not being windows, give it a try.
Thanks for this quick and helpful tutorial! Those commercial 3D scanning systems can get pretty expensive (nearly $3,000), so a quick (and inexpensive) solution like this should be great. What I'm wondering though, since you need to print out those calibration sheets for the David 3D software, is there any way of scanning larger objects that wouldn't fit in the area of the printed sheets? Like a head, or say, even an entire body?
awesome work tinkernut... hey i was wondering if there was any way possible that you could explain hot to setup windows dreamscenes on windows 7 ultimate because i cant find any tutorial that explians how to do it. thanks
for a future short special effects test film i want to make a miniature set displaying europa the moon of jupiter. im going to take pictures of it from all sides and then want to scan it in to a software so that i can use it as a 3D motion capture reference for actors infront of a greenscreen. What software could i use that is cheap or how can i do what you do did in the video and add color? Thank you for reading(i already have blender, voodoo and david...)
In the below video ..they use a webcam and a 3D file of the required object So when that object face's webcam using some software they get the 3D object above the real object. Which software can be used to make such a outfit pls help me out
@nrdesign1991 Really, I remember seeing them make clay models first in the Starwars Special features. They might have been doing it for another reason, or whatever, I figured it was still common practice.
I did everything "by the book", but I have a problem... My laser is too weak X(...Can you tell me what kind of laser did you use and where can I get one?? Oh yes...if it's expensive can you give me some cheap alternatives that will work.. Thanks!!!
Hi guy's , I have a questions. Did you all play DIY projector for David 3d scanner? Do you know about that the projector 's ANSl Lumen , what if my projector 's ANSI Lumen is too high or too low , does it work to scan ??
...Scanning a 3D object into your computer? Really, though, if you watch a 'behind the scenes' video from a 3D movie, the first thing they do is make the model out of clay. Then they scan it and bring it into their computers. Normally these scanners are very expensive, however, with this, you can do it with what you probably already have. Though it isn't that useful for normal users, it is defiantly cool to play with. If you are making a 3D animation, this could save you a ton of time.
@JetJL 3d printers exist but there limited unable to make hollowed cavitys for that they would be 4d printer i bet once there invented they cost mil + each lol
@RedCodeStudios That's nice I use Linux Ubuntu , and Linux Mint, but I'm not sure how you having a Mac has anything to do with this video... Seeing how both Linux, and Mac can run Windows software...
no 4d is is coordinate for orientation to understand it search for gimble lock or the EulerExplained-Desktop video aerodynamics cannot exist with out 4d time is just a scale of motion for this reason it can only be linear making it a line meaning time is 2d ,time is often confused as motion how ever motion is 1d but explaining that is much more difficult lol

I think this is the hardest tutorial you have ever made!
This is just like a basic version of what the professionals use!

the size of the laser line greatly changes the quality of the final scan.
nice video
this dude should is amazing.every kid at school should be taught stuff from his channel.
genius man! I love when alternative ways of doing things are invented!

Dude you sound like you're rapping to the backing track hahaha ty for the video :)

about getting the full 3d scan though, would it work if I get a turntable or a electronic turn-table and then get the full 3d scan like this?
Thanks, that was helpful and amazingly concise- don't forget to take a breath!

Great video! You might want to check out Parsley 3d scanner, which is an open source initiative to build a low-cost 3d scanner.
bringing something you ahve to life in 3d.
I know this video was made 3 years ago. This is now possible to scan/print accurate with Makerbot 3d replicator and 3d Digitizer ( Scanner). Look how far we have come in 3 years.
would the scans come out better if the lighting was better and what about putting the laser on a rail or something so that the movement was smoother?
DAVID Setup.exe which is a: MP3 Format Sound. ayy nice!
Simple easy and some what cheap.
also, you could use voodoo camera tracker, and shrinkwrap a sphere to the mesh imported from the video

Great video, I think I am going to try to scan my face.
this is really cool to be able to do yourself but why not keep the object or just take a picture of it?
It sounds like a rap at the end,it's very neat....o,and your videos rock!
Can a Raspberry Pi run this software ? I would like to do an automatized version of this thing, with motorized turning plateform
nice work,
awesome work tinkernut... hey i was wondering if there was any way possible that you could explain hot to setup windows dreamscenes on windows 7 ultimate because i cant find any tutorial that explians how to do it. thanks
excellent tutorial, thumbs up !
This is a very interesting way to scan 3d images on the cheap, too bad it's too inaccurate for my purposes though.
now this is the real deal. thanks.
this is cool but what would you use it for?
Nice video.
this is great! thx for the tip!
Why the wall behind the object must be white? It can't be black? would it be better?
What is the resolution you can get with a normal webcam?
Thanks.
What kind of resolution can we expect from this? Will there be software upgrades in the future from this creator?

Great vid just wondering if any one could suggest a site I could purchase the line laser pointer from
This is a killer video!!!!!!!!!
I could think of a moving laser moved by a stepper motor. Wouldn't a such linear moved laser produce better images?
blender forever! cool video
you always think of awesome stuff to do videos on 5 stars like always
In the below video ..they use a webcam and a 3D file of the required object

your video are AWESOME
The url points to the commercial HP 3D scanner. Where can i get the David laserscanner software this days? Is any source code available?
how does an executable become a mp3?
Now thats a complicated process. But you can actually create models with clay and change them to 3d to animate them
Dont you know if a barcode reader could work the same instead the laser pen?
I was looking to replicate a small part for a car. Would this technique be accurate enough to do so?
no
You should label your video, "DIY 3D scan rap". sounds like you're rapping
@nrdesign1991 Really, I remember seeing them make clay models first in the Starwars Special features.
They might have been doing it for another reason, or whatever, I figured it was still common practice.
Does it work with green lasers? From what I know,it should work better with a stronger, green laser,am I right?
now u can get structured light insted if laser u use a projector scans are waay better
thanks you are really helpful
Its Very useful video thx alot
Can we use a barcode scanner? It projects a line instead of a single point.
*facepalm* You must use a barcode scanner to make this work...
Yes
I did everything "by the book", but I have a problem... My laser is too weak X(...Can you tell me what kind of laser did you use and where can I get one?? Oh yes...if it's expensive can you give me some cheap alternatives that will work.. Thanks!!!
Can this be done on a bigger scale, like a car for instance?
yes
wow awesome channel man!
Hi guy's , I have a questions. Did you all play DIY projector for David 3d scanner? Do you know about that the projector 's ANSl Lumen , what if my projector 's ANSI Lumen is too high or too low , does it work to scan ??

thanks owen wilson
Can I do after scanning a subject, that subject to transfer in ArtCAM
does it have to be a web cam. could it not be a HD video cam
hah wow i did not know you could do this! Maybe i'll try to do it sometime
Is there any good free software for doing this with the kinect? I've tried a few but none of them worked very well.
I bet if you attached the laser to a slider the scan would come out better
yay! now i can scan an object an print it with my 3d printer! (cloning = EPIC)
@JetJL 3d printers exist but there limited unable to make hollowed cavitys for that they would be 4d printer i bet once there invented they cost mil + each lol
0:58 The installer is an mp3 format sound.
i like your videos keep it up
can u please do a up date there is no 30 60 or 100 all there is Calibpoints_V3_A3 left and right side
Hi,
Since David scanner software acquire by HP😐, could you please share older version which you downloaded earlier.
no
why @@silentsupreme4874
@RedCodeStudios That's nice I use Linux Ubuntu , and Linux Mint, but I'm not sure how you having a Mac has anything to do with this video... Seeing how both Linux, and Mac can run Windows software...
the .exe file is of type 'MP3 Format Sound', slightly suspect. 0:59
can you use a barcode reader instead of the laser?
could you take a cardboard box and put white paper in the back round
why did this get in my sub box 2 times o.O
DUH! Jost go and grab Strata Foto 3D CX! It is the easiest way to do 3D scans...
How do you do your video editing? It looks pretty hard!
awesome vid :D
Can i use green instead of red laser pointer?
Now do this with the Kinect, I will give you a hint, Kinect drivers, openni, nite, Kinect sensor, prime sensor. Good luck.
It won't calibrate or have the red crosses, what do I do?
LOL nice :)
You could just use a xray 3d scanner.
Do a video about how to appear on youtube using other ppl software. Anyone can read a manual or use google.
They did that 15 years ago, but today they "just" model all the objects directly at the workstation PC
it says not enough calibration points visible
no 4d is is coordinate for orientation to understand it search for gimble lock or the EulerExplained-Desktop video aerodynamics cannot exist with out 4d

awsome
Love you
@debaytv not a stone(rock) rights?
I'll just stick with pictures... lol jk. Nice tutorial.
@GamerzDream
Acctually there is...
But it won't be the same materials...
there is the autodesk 123D which function better and easier than this
does the software work for mac?
123d catch only works on windowd and mac :(
will this work with 3dsmax too?
