Looking back on Match Day as we are 1 week from graduation!! 👨🏻‍🎓
✨ What is Match Day?
Match Day is a highly anticipated moment for all 4th year medical students across the country. After 4 years of medical school, we find out what residency program we have been accepted to.
During Match Week, medical students find out on Monday at 10 EST if they have matched to a program and Friday at 12 EST, medical students find out which program they have matched at. Applicants rank all the programs they interview at from first to last, while programs rank applicants they interviewed from first to last. The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) algorithm will match applicants and programs through its algorithm that favors the applicant’s rank order list.
Unfortunately, not all medical students find a match during the algorithm process. Simply put, when the algorithm goes down an applicant’s rank-order list from top to bottom, all of the remaining open positions at each of those programs have already been filled up by other candidates who were ranked higher by the program. Unmatched applicants may participate in the SOAP (Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program) where unmatched candidates apply to programs that also went unfilled during the matching process. This is a quick process that typically has unmatched applicants and unfilled programs conducting numerous interviews on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday prior to Friday’s match day. Often times, SOAP candidates must interview for specialties outside of their desired choice and the options remaining may not be desirable. Thus, candidates may also choose to take a gap year to conduct research and reapply the following year. This is clearly a brutal process with often times too many qualified applicants without enough residency positions in many competitive specialties.
