It's so enjoyable listening to an artist speaking on the importance of the banal details in the birthing of a real,open-ended character, inextricably intertwined with plot...it is transferable to the real, open-ended spiral of banality that living a human life must be composed of, by Nature - that's the comfort fiction provides for me...
I don't know if Mr. McEwan ever reads these posts..I expect not..but if you do please please please write a book about the history of literature, your knowledge is incredible I learn more listening to you than all the books I've read...please write that book..please
His last book, ‘Lessons’, is loosely about that very thing; or at least there’s a great deal about it, incidentally and directly through plot. It’s excellent too, instantly one of my favourites of his, which is saying something.
What he describes about “flow”, the deep pleasure of being in the zone doing a focused task: that is what yogis refer to when they refer to meditation. Meditation isn’t thinking about nothing. It is getting into that zone. You don’t need to do yoga to meditate, or sit cross-legged and chant - you can achieve it doing everyday activities, such as cooking or washing dishes; or by doing other focused activities that are interesting for you, such as writing or painting.
My mom invaded my journals twice. Once as a 12 year old and then when i was 28ish se beat me for my writing when i was young after she seen what i wrote about.
Here is a brilliant writer working in English !... He deserves all the awards and honours of the world.....

Love this interview thank u
"character for me has always been a slow build to come from details" ah yes
I suspect it would be fun to hear Ian do an effortlessly flawless impersonation of actors John Hurt and William Hickey.

thank you for not calling this: Advice for the young !
How do you write the opening to a novel? I think Enduring Love is the case in point
❤❤❤

It disappoints me greatly that Ian McEwan doesn't enjoy Disney World. Do you not like RIDES, sir?
