  • LIVING ROOM & LIBRARY PLANS | LONDON VICTORIAN TERRACE HOME | RENOVATION SERIES EP.1
    Hey guys!
Welcome back to my channel and to the start of a very exciting home series. We will be starting works in our living room in the next couple of weeks and I am so excited to kick things off with the living room and library plans. These are all of the things that we would love to do in our home. They will take time but we are so excited for the journey.
    Big love,
    Luke x

Lovely Reno ideas! A cost-saving idea for the library door might be to keep the existing door but have it modified with a glass insert 1/2 or 2/3 size. I did the same with a living door and had a leaded insert installed with various types of glass panes - etched, ribbed, beveled, and frosted. Saved me thousands. And I kept the door original to the home!

Great ideas! One suggestion I do have..... What about a sliding pocket door in between the kitchen and piano room? 🤔 😊

I would either use a pocket door or a sliding door between your library & dinning room then the door wont interupt space or bang into furniture x

A few thoughts about your future plans. I’m an interior designer specializing in space planning. I see this with my clients all the time - you’re struggling with the architecture of your house sort of fighting how you’d like to use your spaces. Why not have your TV in the back library room? You can leave the door in the living room, close off the door in the back room. Put your sofa where you currently have the 2 chairs. You can hang your TV on the opposite wall with a unit underneath. I encourage clients to think outside the box in order to utilize their rooms in the way that suits them. Don’t fight the architecture too much. Here in North America, TV rooms are usually towards the back of the house, as that’s a more private and causal zone, with a view to the back garden. Your piano can go in the living room as that’s a nice feature to have in the front public space. Sorry i sound very opinionated. Just wanted to help with some ideas of my own. I love your channel and the hard work you put into making it so thoughtful, entertaining, personal and educational.

I would switch the hallway door to open the other way into the library/ piano room. It will open the room up more and be more inviting.

Lydia Millen has a tv in her lounge that changes into a mirror when it’s off? Your window doesn’t shine onto the tv so I think it would work in your room too? And it looks prettier than a normal tv ❤
Alternatively I think the tv will look less bold on the wall when you also have bold colour? Sky glass are so convenient with everything build in it would be a shame to get rid!
Love the red paint idea btw ❤

A much less expensive option than doors between your kitchen space and library is to hang a curtain rod and a heavy curtain you can have open for light or close to keep cozy. Mount the rod at the level of the trim between the top light and the door opening.
I have done this in the doorway between my kitchen and the unheated sunroom and the difference is incredible. I currently have two curtain panels hung back to back. You could use a quilt or look for a vintage curtain.

Your plans are wonderful and exciting!! The paint colors are gorgeous and follow your gut instinct re: paintwork 😄 it’s your place and do what you want. If you are not happy with it in the end it can be painted over. Go for it!! 😄😄
And you can build a frame around the tv?

Enjoyed watching - as an oldie that has moved a fair bit - messy jobs/restructuring/electricals/plastering - first - a must! A pain to get through that stage but worth it.
My advice is not to do anything too soon - you've been there such a short time, please don't rush it. Live with the house as it is and see how it works for you. Any structural etc work all costs dearly, when it may not have been needed at all.
Your library area - I know you posted about having an office area in the spare room - could you not incorporate your lovely desk into the space you have and make that room more of a work/play room - your desk would suit the furniture you have there. Or a built in the recess area, office space - a chippy could build you something floor to ceiling - close the doors when not in use - have mouldings added to the doors to match the original mouldings in that room. I only can think of craft space (that's my thing) and I have used space like this before.
Good luck to you Both - don't rush, don't spend money that could be used more wisely. Plan carefully.

Luke- at 18:27 you mention the door from your library to the hallway. If you decide to change out that door (I think that a glass door of some type would look fantastic and spread natural light throughout your ground floor), I encourage you to think about how the door swings, as well. I've noticed that homes in the UK often have the setup you have at that door, while the norm in the US is to reverse the door swing. Here in the US, that door would have been hinged on the side closest to the perpendicular wall. That allows the door to swing out of the way against the wall when it is open. This improves the flow of the room, particularly when entertaining. It makes it possible to pass through without having to walk around the door. This is a small thing, but I think you'd be pleasantly surprised by how it enhances daily life. The other thing you could do, if you are planning on opening up walls, is to install pocket doors, so that they slide entirely out of sight when you want them out of the way. I look forward to seeing your renovations come to life.

Please bear in mind that if you remove the door in the living room and have it plastered over, you have also to take into account furniture access. I moved into a house which had a knocked through living/dining room and the living room door had been bricked up and plastered over. When I moved in we had to remove the stairs bannister and rails to get my large sofa in. This was 25 plus years ago before bolt together sofas. We struggled for over an hour with tempers getting stretched but finally managed to get the sofa in. The dining room door happened to be opposite the stairs and room was very tight. Hope this is of help to you both. I also painted both rooms in Farrow and Ball Picture Gallery Red which was amazing! Your plans sound amazing and I wish you success with you renovations.

Our old neighbours recessed their TV into the wall next to our lounge (we are terraced). It was the playroom so was not a problem - however when new people bought the house, they sit in there watching TV until late and playing the PS5. We don’t complain (they are very nice people) but sound is horrendous. X.

I like the electric fireplaces - you can get really nice ones that look real. (No mess also) They give off plenty of heat. Its much cheaper too. You dont need to clean your chimney every yr. Or buy logs. Also smoke will damage walls and furniture and could cause a fire with sparks.

Even though its tempting not to, always keep function priority over aesthetics.
If you moving radiators, try and keep one near the external wall in the living room, as these can be prone to damp/mould (can see you have a bit of this elsewhere already). From someone who ended up with a mouldy bay window!

Luke I wouldn’t put a radiator below the living room window, you will be blocking in the heat behind your curtains. I had new heating out into in house a few years back, and the recommendations were to place any radiators heat away from windows to retain the heat within the room better.

Never take a radiator from an outside wall/ window, they stop those cold areas from getting damp. I would put one on the small side wall near your existing one then add one on the opposite wall by the door way, that way you free up that whole back wall, and get extra heating 😁

Very exciting and very solid ideas guys......Think about the way the metal doors will open into the library, one door will be opening against the future bar , open the other way? One thought.....I would even consider keeping the door in the living room....radiator on the the dividing wall with the library and block off the door in the library. Then there would be room for a cosy two seater sofa or banquette against the wall facing the bookcases and the piano could stay where it is by placing the new radiator at the other end where the door was. It would be the perfect place for before-dinner drinks area or after lounging with the extra seating.... If you go with your plan, please try out the piano first facing the bookcases as I'm afraid with the piano there, it will turn the room into a corridor, a room you will not use. I'm sure it will be stunning when you finish!!

One of the most important things is to not be too trusting. Check out the people you hire completely. Have everything in writing and what would happen if the work is not finished in a timely manner. Any changes need to be put in writing. As far as how you decorate and style your house you are doing this for yourselves. Not anyone else. While it’s nice to have people say they like what you have done it’s not necessary. I have friends that have totally different styles than mine. Even though I think their house looks good I wouldn’t do the same in mine. If we all liked the same things and our houses were the same life would be so boring!

LOVE the idea of the red. I once had a red dining room, with dull pewter coloured curtains and traditional furniture. It was dark but light came in from the patio so it was super. It was a very dramatic moody room but I LOVED it. We had a huge mirror on the wall opposite the french folding doors and that helped to bounce the light off. Go for it! And remember… it’s “just” paint. So play and have fun! I love the ideas you have. And by putting in a picture rail, you can find some more vintage art, which will look special. And a big YES to darkening the floors. I’m already picturing your space as a cosy gentleman’s club with modern twists. Add plants and pretty cushions to soften it so it’s not too masculine. Good luck 🍀 and enjoy!!!

    • @shirleymclean5895
      @shirleymclean5895 6 месяцев назад +2

Trouble with Victorian houses - pretty dark. I remember years ago, we had to seriously consider colours, and light source. Dark tones will close the space, and make to room look half the size. Light tones insipid, but you can create a brilliant contrast in the MEDIUM tone palette and give the ILLUSION you dark and light.

Sounds so good! Some advice for you, make a list of all the messy jobs and do those first Luke. We have just finished our extention and know how important it is to get things done in the right order. I'd say get all your electrics and plumbing done first as any chasing in on the walls can be covered when you block your door and start plastering. Don't forget that blocking the door in will impact on your hall decor too. Also floor sanding is a bit messy and some of the boards may have to come up if you play around with radiators. We put picture rail in too as we have painted our living room dark green. We have white on the ceiling and down to the picture rail. It makes the colour "hug" you, rather than the colour looming down on you. You could try and find an old piece of furniture that you could hide your tv in? I made a scrap book with each room in it and made a list of everything we wanted to do with each room and in which order. It is worth working out what the pricing is too, so you can prioritise what you want now and what can wait. Rather than doors between the kitchen and library you could consider a pocket sliding door as they take up less room? Looking forward to more videos like this! How exciting for you both.Take care, much love, Soph.x

You have to be careful with building regs blocking doors, in our house renovation last year (1930s semi) we had the same issues with layout, we had a kitchen extension, then between the two living rooms we had the wall knocked through with doors, then the door in the front room blocked and plastered over. It wasn’t allowed because of fire regs, because we didn’t want a full huge pane of the front window as a fire escape window, the way we got round it was to wait until the building inspector sign it off then put the doors on between the two rooms ( his idea!).

I love your intentions to create warm welcoming spaces in the living room and library. I’m sure your colour choices will be great and you’ll love having a wood tuner.
I also appreciate your concerns about placing the tv, heating the spaces etc.
Could I suggest a possible solution that is a bit different from your plans?
People often find that when they extend to the rear as you plan to do in the future they decide to reinstate a separate cosy living room at the front.
Instead of blocking off the door to the hall ( it’s a shame to remove an original feature and also could make your narrow hallway featureless and tunnel like) you could separate your lounge and library.
You’d have an extra wall where your tv could sit on a narrow console table and wouldn’t be the focus of attention in the room. You’d also be fine with only one radiator at the window if you have a wood burner.
Your library would now be a cosy destination rather than a passageway to the kitchen and again you’d have another wall to furnish- perhaps another bookcase or a stylish sideboard/ bar with a big mirror above. You’re right, it would be a good idea to investigate the chimney breast here.
Hope you don’t mind my comment- it is not meant to be negative in any way, just to add an idea you might not have thought of.

Congratulations to the camera girl. Good job, Zara, although we didn't get to see your sweet face. I was just thinking, i don't know much about the theme, but for the lighting over the bookshelves, maybe you could get those intelligent bulbs and switch them on and off with your phones, so you don't need to do all of the electrical rewiring.
The bookshelves will sure look great once you build around them a frame so they seem built-in. I have a library/office/craft room, but my Billy bookcases look simple. I want to rearrange the whole space and take out all the craftsupplies. I would love to make it look like a real old and cozy library with an armchair and a lamp. I'm sure I will get some inspiration from you.

@@LukeCatleugh Philips Hue bulbs. I have them throughout, so many in fact that I had to add a hub to cope with them all but that's easier than rewiring. You can dim them without the need for a dimmer switch. Depending on the bulb you can switch from cool to warm lighting or even coloured lighting. They can be controlled via an app on your phone but also work with voice commands to Alexa or Google. They can be set to come on or go off at various times too. They're not cheap but they are worth it

We have an open fire in the lounge, my daughter is having one fitted shortly, she has a huge fireplace opening but her best friend had to have hers made much bigger. My daughter sourced an original old oak surround and had slate tiles. She had to have it all checked and her chimney rebuilt too. It is a big job and expensive too. There are RUclips channels that have 10 hour videos of just a painting that people play on their TVs to make it look like a frame TV without paying the price of the frame TV. That might be a good way to mask the TV during the day. You can also buy cheap framing material that you can put up to frame your TV to make it look more like a piece of art painting video is playing. If that makes any sense lol.

I would not do too much to the house. I think it is nice as it is. Darken it and you might be sorry. We have plantation blinds which I love but they do take away some light and then dark walls? I would keep 2nd sitting room bare. A nice calm space. If you make your house too busy it will not be relaxing. You sure have enough books. But still dying to see what you guys get up to!! Love home renovation programmes on TV and YT. Everybody has different taste.

Your plans sound lovely, however I would caution against a log burner. If you are having 2 radiators in your living room, bear in mind that not only are log burners expensive and somewhat messy, they are not that controllable, in a fairly small room like yours you could easily find that you wouldn’t need 2 radiators. Also, the Government are talking about banning them from an environmental point of view, especially in cities. Of course they look lovely but I’m not certain they are worth the hassle for you. Good luck with the renovations ❤

I have a log burner. It is very controllable as you can open and close the vents and it is behind glass doors so it isn’t messy either. I love mine and it has the highest eco rating of all log burners

    • @saffy19
      @saffy19 6 месяцев назад +8

Only new installations of old log burners are prohibited in smoke control zones (eg London). In “Smoke Control Areas” log burners will now only be allowed to emit 3 grams (g) of smoke per hour instead of 5 grams per hour. The new style burners are really controllable plus in warmer weather putting candles in them gives a cosy glow without so much heat.

@@saffy19Completely agree with you. I have a new log burner and it is very controllable. Plus the thermostat will kick in and switch off the heating if needed. I love my log burner and so does everyone else who comes to visit. It makes the room and is so cosy. I don't use it constantly and was told off by the chimney sweep for leaving it 'slumbering' overnight which can be dodgy for carbon monoxide and tars up your chimney.

@@heatherwalton9501 we have a liner in our chimney... it was a must also we are in a very rural part of somerset... no gas , septic tank etc. Logs arè easily delivered. Not so sure how that would be in London.

I highly highly recommend visiting salvage yards, especially with a house the age of yours. You can pick up replacement hardware, doors, windows, all sorts for a fraction of what you would pay new and you're more likely to find things that match the character of your house. Also have a list of things you need and search marketplace constantly, you guys are already great at finding furniture on marketplace but you can get all sorts of building materials as well. If it's going to be a while before the door between your library and kitchen goes in then I'd recommend a nice heavy curtain to keep heat in. Speaking of curtains - when you do the floors, plastic sheets, drop cloths, curtain off the space you are sanding from the rest of the house. Renovation dust will be the bane of your life for a while.

Our Victorian house had all the period features removed by previous owners. Our ceiling are 10 ft tall and looked so bare, but we couldn’t afford to buy decorative big plaster coving. Instead we bought polyurethane moulded coving from Screwfix and polyurethane picture rails which are easy to cut and fit. We fitted the picture rail ten inches from the bottom of the coving, painted the ceiling, picture rail and the space between them all white, like you said you’re going to do. We wallpapered under the picture rail and now It looks much more in keeping with a Victorian house and we’re very pleased with the result. Look forward to watching your Reno vlogs x

So excited for this mini series. I loved that you included pictures beside your ideas of what you're planning to do as it helped with the visualisation. I think having a deep red on the wall in between the two bookcases in the piano room would look lovely and add a cosy feel. I definitely think you don't have to make the TV the centre piece in the living room just as long as you are able to manoeuvre it to face the sofa to get a good view 😂

hello Luke & Zara--just finished your video and really like your idea of closing off that door in the living room and repositioning the heaters. You didn't say what color (if any) you would be painting the second room off the living room. I have a similar configuration to your living room and the smaller "library". I think at one time my smaller room was a bedroom...but at any rate it is wide open to the living room now and so the color configuration of each of these spaces is important to the other. In my case, my living room is a very dark gold...and they painted my "library" room a lighter gold. so it defines the space but still is of the same family as the dark gold. You mentioned painting your living room red. if you go with red, i would suggest something from a "red" palette for your dining room, perhaps a salmon or a light rose or something. Anyway, i can't take credit for this idea; i inherited these colors and have just made them work and they make me feel good.
I really like your idea of floor to ceiling plantation shutters. i have always liked the look of those; unfortunately i don't have any, i just have honeycomb blinds that are inside the window frame. my house had draperies throughout and i quickly removed them because they hid the beautiful white woodwork which is such a clean look. I really enjoy your vlogs...i never get tired of thinking of the endless possibilities for interior spaces. You are certainly on the right track. And yes, you have so much height in those rooms that you should make use of that height for large shelving/display units. I also feel that if that large living room window is going to be plantation shutters that it will lighten dramatically the red that might be otherwise too overpowering. (My formal dining room is red...again i inherited it, but i love it! Not only to be in...but also to look into from the living room). Ok, that's enough for now. really enjoyed your vlog tonight!😮😅😊

I reckon you should flip the way the door from the hall into the library goes so it opens to the wall and not into the room, also, instead of a glass door what about a curtain for that doorway from the library to the kitchen, it would add a lovely cosy feel and a bit of drama! I love the red for the living room, its such a delicious colour for a space that you spend the evening in. I would leave the telly on the chimney seeing as your going to be entering the living room from the library it won't be as in your face as if you were entering from the existing door (that you're going to block up). I also agree about darkening the flooring, it makes such a difference! So exciting, really looking forward to seeing what ye get up to!

Your view on the improvements are great, you've thought deeply about how to best optimise each space, just wondering if you've thought about how your library door opens out on to nothing, I've noticed this is very a common thing in UK, here in Australia the doors swing out onto a wall, making for perfect flow and no loss of usable space, hope you get what I mean
