Have to say this is cool but for me the real SG action is with the SG Specials with the P90s. I have a 1965 SG Special and it’s my main guitar. It’s light, plays beautifully easily and sounds amazing. When rolled back it can sound silvery and snappy like a Tele and fully wound up it’s a rock beast. Ask Pete Townshend.

Yes, SG Gibsons are awesome classic rock guitars. I have a 2004 brown worn out faded with a thick 50's neck . Bare bones , it needed a serious fret job. Bought it new for $ 550.00 , put a manlius modern vintage in the bridge with a air classic in the neck. The guitar sings like a big fat opera lady and roars thru my granger GNR #36 . 👍 , peach guitars always does a fantastic job demoing these great instruments.

The ‘67 looks exactly like my old SG Standard that I bought new in late ‘67. It was the best guitar I’d had up to that point. I remember being disappointed that the neck was narrower and clubbier than the ‘61 with a wide flat neck that the store owner had. It had a Bigsby on it too-mine had the standard Lyre Vibrola. The store owner wanted over twice the price of a new one, cash only; it had been his personal guitar when he was a pro musician. At 17 years old, there was no way I could cough up that kind of cash, so with my trade-in, plus money I’d saved up plus some help from my dad, I was able to get the new SG. The store owner even threw in the case! $317.50 was the list price in those days. If I had my choice of either of those SGs in the video, I’d take the new one. My ‘67 wouldn’t stay in tune-used to drive me crazy! In 1970 I asked a friend of mine to refinish it, shave down the neck a bit, replace the Vibrola with a stop tailpice, and change out the Kluson tuners for Grover pearloid-button Rotomatics. He ruined the poor SG, and I wound up trading it straight across for a beat-but-stock ‘62 Strat. Wish I still had that one too!

I enjoy John's candour regarding modern vs vintage guitars in these videos. I have some 45 - 54 year old guitars and have owned several others in the past, and I absolutely love them, but you really need to have solid, reliable, perfectly setup guitars at your disposal as well. Get the wrong weather and all three of my current vintage collection can be frustratingly finicky for days. That's when I just take a deep breath and pick up my solid as a rock 2018 Telecaster.

I’m one of the guys who bought a ‘67 SG Standard new. I guess now they’ve got that vintage mystique plus 50+ years of aging, but at the time I was aware that it didn’t feel as good as the ‘61-‘65 ones with wider necks. Although decades later I got a ‘65 that had the narrow neck-must have been a late ‘65! I much prefer the wider neck, but beggars can’t be choosers-as a high school student in 1967, I was lucky to be able to buy that new SG, with some help from my dad! It was $317.50 as I recall, and the owner of the store threw in the case. He also had his own personal SG Standard that he’d played as a professional on the road-an early-‘60s one with a Bigsby-but he wouldn’t take less than $500 for it, and that was way out of my price range. Playing it was how I knew that the early ones were better. But I played that ‘67 for several years, unfortunately I took it to a guy to have it refinished in about 1970, and he basically ruined it-but I wound up trading it for a 1962 Strat! Those were the days…!

ha ! I’m really impressed that they picked up on that “edge of explosion” quality to those ‘67 pick ups !
I own a ‘68 335 and that’s exactly right (and it’s the thing I most love about my guitar) , that , at volume particularly , you feel that you are always on the edge of disaster ! it’s very very inspiring …
people lose their minds over PAFs but I’ve always felt that the patent sticker t-tops were just as good , just a little different …

I have 2 excellent 1960s sg's and 2 fairly new standard production sg's. It is immediately obvious that the wood on the old ones is denser thus making them heavier. I don't think old ones sound better, maybe a little different but that is fine with me. I love my newer ones and can relax all night when i take them out for a gig.

I’ve got a later 70-71 SG standard among other vintage pieces and they all sound great but not necessarily better than a new model. The thing with vintage gear, be it guitars, amps or pedals, is that these were tools that we re used when guitars and rock were king. We really are just caretakers for pieces of history; and a time in music which will never happen again; and I feel privileged to be able to help bring these pieces through time and continue to make cool music with them

My VOS 64 special plays, feels and sounds like a vintage SG.
    Gibson absolutely nail it sometimes.
Of course, it has all the same instability issues that the originals had. So I am gonna have to change out the hardware if I want it to play nice…but the tone is undeniable.

I’ve got a 2021 64’ RI VOS as well. You’re right! Gibson nailed it on this one. Mine has the Meastro Vibrola. It stays in perfect tune, as long as I keep the strings fresh. My only beef is the the tremolo arm does not rotate 360 degrees. It bumps into the volume/tone knobs. So I cannot put the arm back 180 degrees to get it out of the way.
I was told by Gibson this is normal… and to true spec. It’s the only one I’ve ever seen this way though.

    • @timh7180

@@timh7180 I sent mine back to Gibson directly and they are the ones who sent it back saying it was good and how it is suppose to be. I actually sold the guitar a little while back now. I found that interesting since my buddy has the exact same guitar and his was “normal”. Meaning you could rotate the arm bar 360 degrees with it hanging up on anything.

had a buddy who owned a early to mid 70s SG, he was always bragging about but in my hands that thing had a tiny toothpick neck. It was unplayable for me and honestly it was the instant AC/DC Angus tone, I mean if you like AC/DC that much I guess that's it. But my modern 07 SG Standard had a much better feeling neck, wider and more filling in the hand with enough room to shred or slide or quick chord changes. Plus I had seymour duncans in it so it didn't just sound like "the AC/DC" tone but I could do everything from Jimmy Page to BOC or Paul Kossoff's Free era tone

Modern guitars are more consistent so the ball park of good and bad is close tg. Vintege are handmade so when its good it’s unbelievable but when its bad its trash. And having been played over decades they morph and change shape too on top of being delicate. Its not ideal to use a vintage guitar like a modern one but in the studio is where its ideal. Remember this, when clapton played on the beano album his guitar was around 5-6 yrs old, not almost 70. You can always get unpotted paf pickups and drop them in if u rly want that sound.

18:50 All pickups are machine wound. All of them. There are fine details on a pickup that MUST be done by hand regardless of who made them or how cheap/expensive they are but absolutely no pickups are wound by hand. And the open/airy sound that a vintage PAF style pickup gives you vs a modern one comes down to one detail: vintage ones are not wax potted. Far too much is made of tone woods and the type of glue used - you know, the stuff that costs huge sums of money on custom shop guitars - but whether or not a pickup is wax potted makes a very significant difference in the tone and is almost never mentioned

The custom shop 1 piece body is a lot better. SG platform is too thin for a 2 piece body.

Vos sg necks are so flat and wide, its just awful in my opinion to play. They do sound amazing though! Just not fun to play all the time. The new sg original series have round C necks that feel amazing and consistent. Nashville studs fit with abr one and small inserts looks great. But add Tone pro bridge and cap upgrade and your really close to that vintage tone! Dont forget tone knob pointers. Original series dont include those either. Also the nut is not bone, so change that and your good. Upgrades about 100$ ive owned 4 vos 61 sgs sold them all . Got a 2020 couldnt be happier. I payed 1000$ us for mine. You can get one for 1500$ all day. If you want a killer neck go Original series, you wont be disapointed.

Your videos were FAR better when there was more playing and less talking! I want to hear the guitars on video because I can read about them in print!

At least they're admitting that the vintage SG sucks & even a plek set-up wouldn't change it. It looks awesome but it sounds f terrible & I doubt any serious musician or songwriter would waste their money on it. It's just a glorified ornament now & it's probably hanging on a collector's wall somewhere.

It's definitely got it's own thing going on that's for sure, the modern one is for sure the more usable of the 2 as it stands though!
You're right about it being on a wall, but it's on our wall as part of the Peach Guitars Collection!

@@PeachGuitars you guys have my respect for making this video because no other company would be so open & honest about a vintage instrument. I now know a modern SG is for me & knowing you could set it up the way I'd like is ideal. Also, it'd be cool to see you guys rock out some more because I can tell you're both playing at maybe 50% power for an older audience. Not everyone into Gibson's is from last century
