How to Care For Your Amaryllis 🤍 | Get Blooms Again | Repotting & Fertilising
My last Amaryllis bulb finished blooming mid-March and my bow window was ready for a post-Christmas revamp so it was time to repot everyone!
Amaryllis bulbs (Hippeastrum) naturally flower in the Summer but they are typically sold during the end of year holidays as forced indoor flowering bulbs.
Don't throw them away when done blooming, as like all bulbs, it can flower again if given the proper care and dormant period.
A couple of things to consider:
Amaryllis are tender which means they cannot tolerate frosts (temperatures below 0°C)
Keep them moist but ensure good drainage to avoid rot
You can leave them outside during the Summer but make sure they do not take any frosts
Amaryllis love to be root-bound so select pots just a little larger than the diameter of the bulb.
How to get blooms the following year:
1) During the Summer, keep watering and fertilising the bulbs. Your bulb may naturally bloom during this time.
2) To trigger more blooms at Christmas you will need to stimulate a Winter. Blooms take 6-8 weeks to form and the bulb needs about 6 weeks of dormancy so everything hangs on retro-planning!
3) At the end of the Summer, cut off any dead foliage and place the bulb in a cool dark place at about 10°C (like a basement). Stop watering and wait 6 weeks.
4) Then around mid-October, place it in a bright area where it is to flower, ideally draft free and water once. Only resume regular watering when new growth emerges. You should start to see leaves and/or a bud emerge. If not, it may mean the bulb is damaged or needs more energy to bloom again. Continue to follow the same process and you may have better luck the following year!
