The tiny, fragile chicks hatched from their eggs must overcome countless dangers and difficulties. While the unwavering protection from their parents is crucial, there seem to be circumstances that are hard for the chicks to accept.
This video highlights the harshness of the grebe chicks' growth process. As the latter part contains scenes that may be disturbing, it's recommended to watch only the "cute" scenes in the first half.

私も昨年、井の頭公園のカイツブリの親子を観察しました。
カイツブリの子育ては愛情あふれていて、でも最後の別れのときなど、とても感動的だと思います。

実際見ていると、悲しい現実が多いですね。そんな現実を乗れ超えてきたからこそ、野生の輝きがあるのでしょうね。

ヒナは辺りが暗くなっても「ピーョ、ピーョ、」と親鳥を呼び続けていました。親鳥はこのヒナは成長する事が出来ないと、あきらめてしまったようで、ヒナにかまう事はありませんでした。翌朝、どこにもヒナは見当たりません。どうなったのかは、誰も見ておらず分かりません。小さく弱っているヒナに、ひとり生きていく力が無いことは確かです。
