@@loridavis7086Yes, you should be able to treat this foundation crochet as the first row for any stitch you might want to use for your blanket. I’ve been making projects this way for a couple months now and haven’t had any problems using any stitches. This is awesome! Especially if you want to crochet a blanket with granny clusters. The starting middle part looks so much cleaner using this method. I'll try it with my next blanket.
Neat! Doesn't work with double crochet and so on though. This got me thinking. I get the idea of using the long tail to build the foundation chain (instead of just looping it around as with the cast-on) and it actually worked! The action is very similar to the foundation crochet but you actually have a foundation chain. Works with double crochet too and so on.
Can you make a video of the long tail cast off double crochet? Or a more detailed explanation? I'm not a knitter, but I do understand the technique for single crochet in this video.
@@girlwithnoname956 The technique shown here doesn't work with double crochets and longer stitches. Doesn't also work if you need skip stitches in the foundation chain like what you often do with fillet crochet, lace work and other fancy stitches. The one I came up though work for all these. I tried to make a video using my phone camera but it doesn't work. The focus keeps getting messed up. So, I'll try to make a very detailed explanation of what I did. In essence, what you will be doing is crocheting the foundation chain with the tail yarn and the first row of stitches with the ball yarn at the same time. 1) Measure the tail. You need a tail that is a bit longer than the three times the length of the foundation chain. I often use four times the length to be safe. 2) Work as usual and create the slip knot. This slip knot would be the first chain of the foundation chain. 3) Yarn over with both tail yarn and the ball yarn on your hand at the same time as if they are one yarn. There should be a total of three loops on the hook: the ball yarn, the tail yarn and the slip knot. You might need to hold the tail yarn and slip knot in place. 4) Pull the ball yarn loop through the two loops (tail yarn and slip knot). 5) Now create the starting chain using the ball yarn. For double crochet, three chains are often used so chain three. Now you will have four chain stitches, the fist chain is first chain of the foundation chain and the three chains is counted as a double crochet. Now we will start adding the foundation chain and first stitch row at the same time. For double crochet: 6) Yarn over with the ball yarn. 7) Insert hook on the last stitch in the foundation chain. 8) Yarn over with the tail yarn. You would need to hold the tail yarn and yarn it over the hook. 9) Pull yarn through the chain to create a loop. This loop is a new stitch for the foundation chain. 10) Yarn over with both tail yarn and the ball yarn at the same time as if they are one yarn. There should be five loops on the hook. 11) Pull the ball yarn through two loops (these should be the loop made by the tail yarn and the loop of last stitch of the foundation chain). 12) The situation now should be familiar. There should be three loops on the hook that looks just like as if you are crocheting a normal double crochet stitch. Working with the ball yarn, proceed as if doing a normal double crochet. Repeat 6 to 12 until you have the required number stitches. You will then need to secure the foundation chain. Insert hook into the last foundation chain, yarn over with the tail yarn pull through the chain to create a loop, yarn over with the tail yarn again and pull the whole yarn through the loop. Pull the yarn to tighten and secure. Now you have what looks like a normal foundation chain and the first row of double crochet stitches. You have to adapt this for other crochet stitches but it should not be difficult. If you want to join into a ring... Well this is more complex. Essentially, you sew the two end of the foundation chain together using the tail yarn itself. But that is for another time. Hope that helps.
@@rosverlegaspo6752 thank you so much for the detailed instructions. This sounds smart! I think I follow your instructions; it makes a lot of sense, but I'll know when I try it out. Soon... Thank you!!!!
FINALLY I GET TO USE A KNIT STITCH AND A CROCHET STITCH TOGETHER. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO MASTER KNITTING. I CAN CAST ON AND MAKE A FEW STITCHES. THANK YOU FOR THE COLAB.....
Wow! I like foundation stitches for starting a project, but it took me the longest time to “see” which loops to work into. This is so much simpler! And as a knitter, the cast on is almost automatic. So cool.
I wish all crocheters knew this, because I've usually had lots of trouble with my foundation chains, but I'm sure I won't now. I appreciate that you said that the action is the same thing as a long-tail cast-on in knitting, because I already knew how to do that, so hearing the comparison made it easier for me to learn this. Thanks for sharing!
I am definitely going to try this on my next project. Thank you for sharing! It looks so much easier than the traditional foundation chain, which I do love by the way. But I think this technique will be even better.
Amazing and beautiful. Thank you for the great tutorial. Definitely takes a little time to get the hang of it. I have been a knitting and crocheting for almost 50 years and this is the best looking and sturdy foundation. Will definitely make projects better. I don't like the long tail cast on, but after I use it for my crocheting I'm sure I will use it more with my knitting also. Thank you.🥰
A long tail cast on, but for crochet... I never would've thought a knitting technique would work so well with a hook. As someone who has been using chainless foundations due to my chains always becoming too tight, I'm already looking forward to giving your technique a try!
this is BRILLIANT! I've been looking for something like this for BLO slip stitch since it has such a lovely 4 way stretch, and this is an absolute life saver. Personally, I worked into the twisty side so the other edge has those clean Vs along it. (haha, I hadn't even finished the video, and just realized you go on to say exactly this. Great minds think alike!)
Thanks for making this tutorial. I had learned another, more difficult version. Naturally, when I tried to remember how to do this, I failed. Your presentation is clear and easy to follow. The resulting chain is perfect for my current project. My chainless "foundation" chain forms the center of a scarf, worked from both sides. I did have a problem with your instructions for determining the length of the "tail" before one starts. The length needed probably depends on the gauge (hook size, yarn weight, etc.) one works with. I needed a much longer "tail" than 3x the width of my scarf to get the number of stitches I needed (using worsted weight yarn and a 5mm hook). I'd advise starting with a longer "tail" than seems reasonable, especially when making the foundation for a big project. I'd rather have to clip some extra yarn than to have to begin again when near the end of a too-short chain.
THIS is truly revolutionary. There is a "Foundation Chain," technique that provides something very similar to yours, but OH! It is SO fiddly and time consuming, even though it looks and works excellently. But I truly think YOURS IS BETTER! So fast and easy. I can't wait to try it on my next project, a full length Maxi Cable jacket. Thank you so much for sharing this with the rest of us!!!
*G *E *N *I *U *S You, my dear, are on a whole other level. Thank you SO much for this! I have a project I was wanting to use the foundation chain for, but just could not figure it out.

For double crochet:
6) Yarn over with the ball yarn.
This is actually so useful and impressive! Everyone needs to see this!
I use the same method for casting on stitches when I knit. Thank you for the idea of using it for foundation crochet!!😊
This is absolutely genius! 🎉🎉 Major big brain energy!!!
This is so totally awesome! I want to make trivet using the waistcoat/knit stitch and this will be a gagné changer for starting. 🎉
New crocheter here! Thank you so much! I feel lithos will tighten up my work and make it look much cleaner
this is BRILLIANT!
A cross between knit and crochet. Genius!
Thanks!
Mind blown!!!! You are a genius!
Totally cool and very easy to learn with your clear video. THANK YOU!!
I will be giving this a try. Thanks for this video
I was gunna say, this is looking alot like the long tail cast on in knitting...ill have to try it!

You, my dear, are on a whole other level. Thank you SO much for this! I have a project I was wanting to use the foundation chain for, but just could not figure it out.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You made it easy to understand and it is straight!
Aw thank YOU Shirley!
You have just revolutionized the way I crochet! I mainly do amigurumi. this is SO GENIUS
Fantastic!!! I love it. This is how I cast on. This is the best foundation chain that actually looks good
This is FANTASTIC! I will never do an old foundation chain! 🙏👌
This just encouraged me to buy yarn I don't need just to try this out thank you very much😂
Many people find great joy in generously sharing their knowledge and expertise without any hesitation. There are individuals out there who possess an extraordinary skill of thinking innovatively and conjuring up ideas that are so mind-blowing that they leave you speechless. The sheer brilliance that emerges when these two qualities intertwine is nothing short of astonishing, leaving you with a profound sense of gratitude. I want to express my sincere gratitude and say a heartfelt thank you!
I think this is very very cool , thank you for sharing this technique with me and your viewers . I appreciate you very much.👋
I love this technique! Lady, you are a genius!Thank you so much for sharing!
Wonderful! I found since I’m doing a cardi in one piece, I have a 150 stitches to start with. Well, I didn’t estimate enough 😂 , so I just attached a 2nd cake of yarn. Works wonderfully. Thanks
This is spectacular! I can't wait to try it for the bottom of a bag. 🎉🎉 thank you
I used to knit a little and when I was first watching your movements I thought it looked familiar. As soon as you said it was a way of casting on knitting stitches but with a slight change, I remembered! 🤦🏼♀️ I like everything about this and agree about only using this method from now on! 👌👍👏
That's how I cast on when I knit. So easy and conforming. Thanx for this.
This was sooooooo useful! I learned to knit first so crocheting has been a little challenging. A soon as the long tail cast in reference connected I was good to go!
