I was there on August 11th, 1968 when 70013 ‘Oliver Cromwell’ hauled the ‘15 Guinea Special’, the last steam hauled excursion by British Rail. Back then there were 4 tracks, one either side of the existing platform and 2 through roads for goods traffic. There was also an unusual signal box which straddled what is now the sole surviving track. Sad to compare the memory of the station in 1968 with the contemporary halt...
One of my dimmest, faintest childhood memories is walking around Wayoh with my family on a summer early evening when I was about 4, and looking up to see a DMU headed across the viaduct.
Oh my goodness, this is the most random stop ever. I'm so glad you covered it. I used to travel this route to my hospital placements when I was studying in Manchester. I was always fond of the entwisle stop because there was a beautiful lake you could see just peaking through the wooded hills as you're nearing it. I gasped when I saw the shot of the bridge, I've travelled this route countless times and never knew what it looked like. Thank you so much for showing this, it's brought some memories back.
I'd argue that the "continuity error" involving the timetable isn't an error... 0713 is in the "first trains" column - and as it's the first train, it does kinda belong there...
I really love it when conductors and train staff recognise Geoff - certainly shows how people enjoy their jobs so much that they spend their spare time watching RUclips videos of the train network.
The Strawbury Duck at Entwistle is a great pub to visit, their food is fabulous and its is such a stunning area to go walking. Walking, beer, food and trains. It can't get any better.
I’m guessing that the timetable is actually correct as it’s just helpfully highlighting which is the first train and then in the 7-8 section out of shot it will repeat that service in full. If that puts your mind at rest
0:46 It's nice to see an "Alight here for..." sign at a request stop. In order to read this, one needs to request a stop here, first, already knowing what this stop is to be alighted at for. :-D
And for those Yanks like me who cannot get back to the UK for our fix of tea and countryside (and London) this year, these vids are a welcome taste of what we remember and what we are missing. Thank you, Geoff, for this moving verdant picture of England.
I have no idea how I stumbled upon a channel with a guy who just visits rarely used train stations, but I really like this... it also reminded me of the local train I used to take here in Denmark when visiting my grandparents.... it went from Køge to Fakse Ladeplads, and it had a few of these request stops, one of which closed down a few years ago since it hadn't been used by anybody in years...
Thanks Geoff. I live with 3 adults, apparently. To whom emptying full bins & doing cleaning are alien concepts. A tea and this in my notifications has calmed me & put a smile on my chops🙂👍 Plus Entwistle ( & Middlewood) sound like they're straight out of Middle Earth!
I edited as i realised that tea had autocorrected to few. Changed and now lost my Geoff heart. Cruel world! You give, then snatch away. 😞. I shall have more tea!...... & some lemon cheesecake. 🍋🧀🎂
On the day they were filming at Entwistle station my wife was pushing our 18 month old daughter around the reservoir in her pram. She walked up to the station to get the next train home and ended up in the middle of filming. As she struggled to get the pram on the train , Peter Kay was good enough to give her a hand but she didn't recognise him at the time because he was "dressed so weirdly"!
Thanks for a beautiful stroll in the English countryside, from someone isolated in the high country of Arizona. Thanks again for the pleasant diversion.
The station is a mere shadow of it former glory. Old photos show 4 lines with an island platform between lines 1 & 2 and a signal box on a gantry spanning lines 3 & 4 (the fast lines). Plus goods shed and yard. www.entwistlefamily.org.uk/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/61-Entwistle-Station-2-960x455.jpg
Perhaps a complete video of stations used as famous film/tv locations..... Thanks for this video - Always interesting stuff to hear about.... Cheers & thumbs up from me..
Entwistle Reservoir as it is known is very popular with dog walkers as is the pub just above Entwistle request stop. One of the most delightful locations in the north-west and only a few minutes up the line from Bolton.
Shout out for you wearing the mask on this deserted station and train. You are a remarkable and exemplary human being to me. I hope all works out for you as the there are some cracks in the facade which I appreciate even more to be pointed out. Thanks!
If I didn't know better, Geoff, I'd say the railway companies and the various tourist organisations were paying you to do this! I know they are not, even though some of them do 'support your channel' in small ways - so they should. Real folding money couldn't buy what you just did for Entwistle - identify and highlight the charm, beauty and stunning views within a few miles of the station. Great vlog, I thoroughly enjoyed it and the railway companies ought to be grateful.
Just up the road from me, i hope you visited the Strawberry Duck pub. Entwistle and the surrounding villages of Edgworth and Chapeltown are lovely. Happy to meet for a cuppa next time you visit the station.
Great, and here's an odd thought. You've never covered the Alderney Railway, the only public line in the Channel Islands. Okay, the line only has 3 stops, but one is a request! Treat Ms Pipe to a trip, and a chance to ride in 1958 tube stock, hauled by a diesel shunter. Unique!
Travelling to the pub (and getting home again ie not missing the last train that left before last orders!) was a rite of passage as a Salford Uni student in the 1980s.
The one time, the ONE time my home place gets mentioned, and he calls it Hazel Green instead of Hazel Grove! I did also think they just filmed that M&P scene at Middlewood station nearby, thinking our area was actually useful, the dream is crushed hahahaha
Haha - I stopped your video and looked up the episode to "educate" myself before continuing, only to discover that you put the pertinent bits into your video. :D Gorgeous viaduct shot - worth the mud.
I was there last Friday myself and did the same walk down the hill to the lower dam. You should have gone straight on a bit and turned right to go back up the hill through the woods. Couldn't upload my picture into the comments.
Pendantry here, but Max & Paddy train times sign was entirely correct. Leftmost column was "First Train", and listed "07:13" as the first train. You can't then repeat 07:13 in the "06:00 to 07:00" column becuase 07:13 is *after* 07:00. Simples... :D
Phoenix Nights was a work of genius. It was made by Peter Kay's own production company and he won't allow C4 to repeat it as he doesn't want it flogged to death as has happened with most sitcoms.
I'd buy a ticket from here to Middlewood! I've always liked the look of the real Middlewood as its some distance from a road and has a disused railway running over that top!
Entwistle is my go-to place to go for walks from Manchester by train. There's a lovely ice cream and pastry shop in the town about 2 miles walk from the station.
Entwistle is literally in the middle of nowhere. I lived in Darwen a few years ago and used to get the train to Entwistle and walk back to Darwen and do a spot of geocaching along the way,
Did they use Entwhistle as Middlewood in Max and Paddy because it has tree's behind the platform and actually Middlewood doesn't? I now feel the need to visit Entwhistle as I'm a massive M&P fan!
Once whilst waiting for a train at Romford Station I was busy chatting to my friend. I was too busy putting the world to right looking at him whilst standing (not to near) the edge of the platform and not paying attention to the world around me. He suddenly exclaimed "Here is the train" as it slowly trundled into the station. Being awoken suddenly from my rant I noticed the train and in a slight moment of panic I stuck my arm out for it to stop. My friend, laughing said "What are you doing? You only do that for buses not trains!" Well Geoff has now filmed a wonderful series of request stop videos to prove that my friend was incorrect.....sometimes. Incidentally three weeks later I did the same thing at Romford Station.
Wahey, I was right. Entwistle on the Clitheroe to Manchester Victoria (now Rochdale) line. Get in. Really nice pub near the station called the Strawberry Duck. Highly recommended if you ever make it back.
Lol! The one time I took a rail journey in Western Canada through the Rockies to Vancouver, I boarded the train at… the Entwistle Alberta siding request stop. No platform, just some signals. :)
30 people a day? When I was there on a freezing February Sunday morning about 8 of us got off one train and a fair few got on. It seemed a bit busy to be a request stop I thought at the time. Anyway, seeing it’s on the Rochdale to Clitheroe line reminds me of a weird phenomenon/scenario. From Rochdale you’re able to get a direct train to Blackburn in either direction - west via Manchester on this line or east via Todmorden/Yorkshire. Surely there can’t be many places in the UK where you can get a train to a certain destination without changing where you can set off in either direction
Geoff have you ever considered a video on the South Fylde Line (PRE-BPS)? It's a single track, but with a lot of history and some nice stations. And of course, if you time it all right you could end it at Blackpool South, stay in a hotel and then have a day of fun on some smaller gravity-powered trains at the Pleasure Beach.
Looks ike there's a lot of little whistle stop stations in Great Britain that could use a lick of paint this year. I am surprised there aren't local booster clubs that volunteer to adopt a station and do this, along with some general container gardening and charm.
Once did a walk around that part of the world and had a look at the station which is actually not as far from civilisation at it may seem. Great video.
oh yeah it is from max and paddys road to nowhere, all the episodes are on RUclips geoff, i lived in bolton for 15 years and never knew that was in bolton
It's seen various upgrades and refurbs like... a gate. They're living the dream in Entwistle!
@Mag Ditto!
A GATE! The lucky swine! I hope those planning the new Waverley refurb are taking note?!

Look on the bright side Andy, at least it's still there.
Thanks Geoff. 11 out of 10 for the aerial shots of the train going over the viaduct!
One of my dimmest, faintest childhood memories is walking around Wayoh with my family on a summer early evening when I was about 4, and looking up to see a DMU headed across the viaduct.
I'm sure its much simpler than this but has Geoff got a very long selfie stick for the aerial shots? I think I'm joking, I'm not sure!
Chris Read - I’m pretty sure he has a drone!
@@chrisread4818 Spoiling it? It is probably a drone. Very nice footage!
That shot of the train on the viaduct was SO nice… made me smile.

I was pondering that, too!
Indeed. And if the shot panned right a bit we'd see 0713 also under the "7 to 8am" column.
Absolutely agree.
It's corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.
I was on the same conductor course as Michael back in 2009! I'm now a driver at Manchester Victoria
I really love it when conductors and train staff recognise Geoff - certainly shows how people enjoy their jobs so much that they spend their spare time watching RUclips videos of the train network.

ITS FINALLY HERE! My nearest request stop.
Hope you put your hand out for the train lol
Nearqueststop challenge incoming

Nah, 100% Geoff
And mine!

This was excellent. Lesson: landscapes are as beautiful as timetables.
The emotion on his face when he's seen the viaduct is so cool ahahah Glad I'm not the only one to get these feelings when watching that stuff lol
Enty! If you’re there again, the Strawbury Duck just at the station entrance is an absolutely delightful pub.
I’ll second that!
