I remember Da Rink was located on the other side of the plaza. Used to go roller skating every weekend when small kid times. When Ice Palace opened up, roller rinks died.
ohhh yes! I remember that as well. I think I got to go inside for a little while in the 80s. I wonder what is being used in that spot now. Great memory!
haven't gone to the Cultural Plaza in several years..but back then, it really showed that the entire place needs to be modernized/updated...Kent's Drive In...good stuff, and that lady has a very good memory when I went there a few years ago..she remembered my co-worker from like 5+ years prior with astounding memory skills.
Yes a lot needs to be worked on there. Lots of vacant spaces. I always wondered how Empress Restaurant was able to survive upstairs. The place was huge but not enough people coming to eat. Hong kong noodle was pretty good when I went the back in the day. Oh yes Kent's drive inn too. Very nostalgic for me. Thanks for watching!
Kents used to be a favorite. Black bean chicken was the bomb. Low prices and great selection. Used to be drug dealers everywhere. Sketchy area but safe considering. Always old guys gambling w dominoez
Kind of similar to some chinese markets in Vancouver BC Canada. Land is expensive and lots of empty stores. Really sad. Honolulu being so strong as a destination,it's a surprise that they can't make it there. Kinda means it has to be a worldwide issue. At least Chinatown still resembles Chinatown there somewhat. Stores here aren't necessarily even Chinese owned or have Chinese product any longer.
The Chinese Cultural PLaza is built on an area that was used to be known as Tin Can Alley I believe at least a part of it is built over Kamanuwai lane The lane no longer exists Also, Maunakea St. used to end at beretania St & did not go through to Kukui St & Vineyard Blvd

I remember indulging my roast duck addiction at Royal Kitchen in the mid 1980s. Good video!
thanks for watching. I love Royal Kitchen, I should try their roast duck one day.
@@AuthenticallyCharles The meats at Royal Kitchen are not as good as Chun's Meat Market, but it's all good to me.
Thank you for showing us parking & walking around. Helped me a lot.
My favorite store there is cookies fine jewelry! The best place⭐️
