  • I replaced the existing synthetic nut and saddle of my S Yairi YE-40 acoustic guitar with Bone nut and saddle. Can you hear the difference in tone? I did not replace the strings for this test.

      Do you play only open strings? Think about your frets and fingers too! The nut is 200% useless when you press the string on a fret or the fingerboard (when you got the guts to play fretless).

      Build a guitar out of bone! Human bone sounds best, I was told by a cannibal guitar player. His name is Slasher for good reasons. You love bone, don't you? Amputate a leg for you instruments? How far does your love go? Bet you don't love animals a bit.

    Headphones on:
    * original saddle & nut had a plastic kind-of sound -seriously obvious.
    * the replacement bone presented an immediate difference -sound not held back as with the original saddle & nut. Much brighter & clearer / cleaner.
    .
    Thanks for this vid. Definitely got me into bone'n up on all saddles & nuts from here on out.

    I did seem to hear a slight difference when he played open cords. The bone seemed to give it a slightly warmer tone, not so bright and sharp. From what I have read, they say bone is much more slippery then man made materials. That would be an advantage to lesson string friction and hang ups as the strings cross over the nut. In turn, better tuning stability. Just that in it's self would be worth changing over to bone! I'm going to do my Fender Stratocaster first, it has a wiggle stick. Curious to see if it stays in tune better when using the whammy....

      I guess you could use a pencil and put in some graphite in the slot to help with the problem. Anyway, the bone in the video sounds too mellow for me. It seems to significantly stifle the sound. Would be interesting to hear about your opinion after your "bone" transplant.

    yup bone is better imho for smaller guitars... gives it a richer smoother tone without harsh string sound of plastic... which can be great if you are looking for that articulated sound but most acoustics i have played with do sound better with bone... an old dreadnought might sound better with tusq saddle though to make it more articulate.

      If you have a really cheap plastic saddle on the guitar, I think it's worth to replace with bone even for beginners guitar. But if you already have Nubone, Tusq or similar good quality synthetic bone, I think it depends on the tone preference.

      Yeah, most likely it is just a plastic. I have worked on FG700 and the saddle was plastic. I guess it is the same with FG800. I would recommend that you record the tone before and after saddle replacement. I am sure you will hear a difference.

    • @arcanics1971
      @arcanics1971 6 лет назад +1

      That's very expensive. For comparison my local luthier charges £55 for a set up including fitting a bone nut and saddle, and that includes his labour and all parts. You can buy a decent bone saddle for around 3 to 7 dollars and the same for a nut. There are many "how to" videos on RUclips but if you do not feel confident then a guitar shop or luthier should only charge you somewhere between 30 and 100 dollars, depending on their pricing.
      200 is definitely over the top. I think these people are scamming you.

    • @darylwinn3998
      @darylwinn3998 6 лет назад +1

      No you don't need to remove the bridge. Remove the saddle and file it down level. Don't take off too much. Put it back on and put on a good set of strings like Elixirs extra lights. Oh yeah, put on a new bone nut also. Voila.... you're in business.
