- I bought my son an RC tug boat so he would have something to run in the water when I'm flying my RC float plane. I bought it knowing that the electronics would probably need to be replaced. I'm going to tell you about the boat and talk about the upgrades I did.

You gave me lots of ideas, including adding a smoke machine to it. I have the original trawler back when the company was owned by Dickie toys. I did what you did by eliminating all the electronics and changing everything over to hobby grade electronics. The big thing with the Dickie fishing trawler was it was loaded with 1980, 's electronic that was not waterproof. as soon as the electronics got wet, it shorted everything out, then corrosion set in. Many were returned right away. I got mine at the Local Goodwill in its original box. I was hoping to salvage the electronics but it was a lost cause. The trawler has working wench that can raise and lower the nets. I actually drilled out the spot light and added a really bright led! I also added led lighting in the cabin and mast. At night, its really impressive.

Had the same issues with their sailboat. Wonderful boat but the electronics don’t last long. So same thing . Ordered new radio and servos. I ordered the tug boat to retrieve the sailboat when the wind quits .
You nearly rebuilt the whole thing with separate parts. Looks like the only thing you got from the original boat was its plastic casing and a few parts. Nice video.
You got this for your son. I got it for my 23 year old self. That's okay with me though.

I got a similar model. I wanna replace the battery and engine too and add more lights and make it look weathered. Put a smoke generator in the chimney and maybe eventually make the crane arm operable and hydraulic and motorize the winch too. It has potential to be a real nice boat and I got mine for a good price.

I picked up a German made Trawler a few months ago from our local Good Will. The electronics were fried wich I guess is pretty normal because they used bees wax was a water proofing. I also noticed this thing has holes in the bottom for some reason,I didnt see any kind of pump but am thinking it was supposed to help balast the boat but instead caused the boat to fill up and short out the circuit board. I saw something simular only its a tug boat advertised on line,It also filled with water and shorted out. The price was around $144 dollars and didnt last very long. I have no idea if its a copy of what I have only mabe the top half was changed. I have purchased a new transmitter and receiver as well as brushed ESC speed controller. all the electronics still function well,just not the controls that came with. The deck work was really well done on this boat. I was really happy with it. I have to get it out of storage now to install the electronics. after seeing your review,I may modify the steering,and install a servo since it has the same type of steering yours has.
does any know if it suppose to have some water in the hull like its not much its just like a small lego plate depth its really old i got it when i was 10 years and now im 18 please can somebody tell me if i have to open it to see if my dad did seal it off coreclty it had a issue with the water pump and still have its been staying and picking up dust for 8 years but it runs perfect just the issue with water pump and a bit low range but its kinda good egough for me
I have this same boat and it leaks water onto the cab. Did you have any problems with that? it looks like the white posts that come up from the water chamber for the spray are hollow and water is just pouring into the boat? should these be capped off?
hey man, I change my motor, esc, transmitter n receiver but wish to reuse my pump and servo but I saw a twisted red n black connector which I believe are the power supply and also another 4 wired connector from the servo as well. any idea how I shd conect up the connections to the receiver of the old servo?
Does the pump run continuously or can you control it from the controller?

Awesome and inspiring video. I took this challenge on to make a horizon tug rival. Any idea what size the prop shaft is? My plastic coupler also stripped and im looking at replacement options.

The centre of gravity is high.
My son 's boat hit the middle of this tugboat caused it over turned.
Very true. Adding ballast weight to the hull can help.

i have this issue to but mine does not short out it does still run perfect but all goes out when i lift it and water pump does not work so your may be a fake one i cant be sure but might be
