Man son is left handed. I've tried it out a few times now and was amazed how quickly I adapted. I think once you have the basics down as a Drummer you can alternate between the two quite easily. Great video mate
Don't forget that open handed doesn't just mean switching hands. It also inclues playing any part with any hand dynamically! Simon also does that really well.
I can play either, and I have a blast switching back and forth often. I am so happy now that " switching " is my new way to enjoy playing. A game I play to switch often, like every 4 bars, or even now within a bar. I also alternate twirling with whichever hand is free for 2 beats, and also throwing a stick in the air. So much fun!
There are no secretes, there is no magic. It's all just practice . Practice 30 minutes ( kit some days, pades some days ) You WILL improve and continue to improve.
I am a big fan of Simon Phillips and after nearly 40 years of drumming, I too am trying to play left handed (open) and the freedom its giving me is unbelievable. It's as hard as f@#k though.
When I have my drumming lessons it takes me and my teacher at least 5 minutes to change the whole drum kit around to my left hand, I do music at school (singing and drumming) I rarely do drumming at my school as it takes a lot of effort to change it around, so I normally stick to singing which really sucks cos I would like to p.ay the drum kit at my school at some point. If only there was a left handed drum kit! Tbh I haven't really researched left handed kits but if there is any left handed kits plz reply to me as it would be helpful, its a struggle since ,y little brother is right handed and p.ayz drums as well so there may not be any point, I have a electric drum kit at home I normally have to change highhat and base drum pedals around but snare the same place and all Tom's the same as they don't move and they r screwed on! 😅
Dude, you can do the same thing. Just place your hat on the right side, and your half way there. Better yet, replace it with a cable hat to avoid any foot issues. True open-handed players require comfort and consistency with both hands and feet.

You don't need Alijandro. All you need to do is practice some every day.
I'm starting to incorporate using open handed in my playing as I feel that I can get more power on the snare drum

I play open handed no problem. I play my ride if like I’m playing right handed . Lift hand over my right , playing the ride & right playing my ride.
Bro, you're basically letting your right arm do all the work
Moving the ride cymbal to the left side? That's crazy but worth it.
Wasn't Steve Smith playing his Separate ways drum cover with the open hand technique
always a good day when you upload!

You didn't explain in the video what the side stick challenge is.
It was so funny to see your drum stick fall out of your hand.
I love it when you do the Maneskin pose
