    Left handed drummer and play open handed on a “right handed” kit. I honestly think this is the correct way to play. It is awesome to play with no crossing of hands. Add a floor tom to the right of the snare and you’re in business. I also play a “right handed” guitar and bass, again it seemed more natural to me, chord hand is my strong hand, strumming hand my weak hand. Makes sense to me.

      I know this left handed guitarist who plays a right handed guitar. Dude can sweep the metal like no one else in our town, and I think a lot of it is that his dominant hand is on the fretboard.

    • @natsuzkan
      @natsuzkan Год назад +1

      Yeah, I'm right-handed but I've got my kit set up "lefty". Either foot ought to be able to kick just fine. May as well have my right foot control the thing my right hand is hitting 🤷

    • @patrickellis3205
      @patrickellis3205 4 месяца назад +2

      New to this but as a lefty my kit is setup right handed although I play the hi hat with my left and the snare is in between my legs, this feels very natural to me. I then actually lead the toms with my left and just play generally the left side of the kit with my left hand and the right side of the kit with my right hand. Snare pedal and bass pedals are at about 11 & 1 o’clock feels great to me.

    I came up with this setup years ago after seeing Abe Laboriel Jr. move his bass drum to his left. After doing just that, I also moved the HH to my right on a cable hat as Harry has done and fell in love with this setup. Definite advantages to playing like this !! And he's right...it drives other drummers who sit in crazy. Not to mention sound techs who never have seen setups like this. Nice to see someone else who has the experimental drive in them....thanks Harry...er...Dude.

    I didn't even know this was called open handed drumming but I always found it fascinating watching Billy Cobham! I assumed he was a lefty and just played a right handed kit. There's also a drummer here in Budapest that plays like this and it's so much fun watching his style. Thanks for this explanation, it was very informative.

    I've been trying to learn open hand with a conventional setup. I'm still sort of a newbie, so maybe it will take hold, but doesn't not feel as natural as crossed. As I have an extra ride cymbal, going to put one near the hat to try that very cool technique you showed. Love your playing dude. Creative fills and rock solid groove. You are a star in the making for sure.

Because nothing is liked by everyone, and unconstructive negativity is why the internet is such a shithole.

I finally got another kit after being benched with a brain injury since 2009 and my musician kids just look at it and chuckle. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Thanks for bringing such great energy to the throne Harry!

    Very interesting. When I first started teaching myself in high school, I played open and felt comfortable doing it. A year or so later, I started taking drum lessons and my teacher told me that it would just work better if I played traditional, so I retaught myself and have been traditional ever since. Years later I see that I could have played open and that one of my favs (Carter B) played open too! Kicked myself for sticking to traditional. Traditional is nice to know but I wish I stuck with playing open. Maybe some day I'll go the route of your set up. Thanks for taking the time to explain it.

    I used to play a kit with 4 tom toms stacked above each other plus 2 floor toms, hi-hat was in its traditional spot. When I listen to my demos from that era I played tom patterns and beats I never was able to do when I went to a traditional 5 piece.
    I definitely can appreciate how a creative drum set-up can enable drum fills and beats you wouldn't normally come up with if using a traditional set-up.

    I'm a leftie and have been playing open handed for 25+ years. HH and ride on the right (because ride=right, right?), toms from center to left, left foot as master. I've mostly been happy with this, although the non-dominant right hand lacks a bit in the chops department, but I constantly compensate with the left, so all good. I've met quite a few lefties with this kind of setup, but you're the first rightie to do it like this AFAIK. Kudos!

    Did you ever think about doing both? I did. And even though my brain revolted at first, it gave up it‘s resistance soon and let me be two drummers. In the first years, there actually were two totally different drummers. But over time and with more practise, they‘ve almost become one technically, even though they still sound different due to the drum kits‘ setup.
    This helps in mastering other instruments, by the way. When you‘re used to playing instruments from the lowest note on the left to the highest on the right, like a piano, you‘re in for a surprise when you try to play panflutes. It really gets whacky when you tackle steel drums, as the notes aren‘t even in sequence there, and some seem to be on the wrong side. But with the attitude gained by equally drumming left and right sided, you‘re in a great position to go for it and feel comfortable in no time at all.
    Oh, and it helps with martial arts, too. An opponent will always watch out for your strong hand. Imagine the surprise when you whack him with the other hand. 😝

    There is no academically correct way to play drums.

    • @drumcorelovor3039
      @drumcorelovor3039 6 лет назад +6

      hingeslevers that is an interesting argument. May I play devils advocate and say there are many different techniques that are considered “correct” on drums? I agree with you that there is no ONE right ways to play, but there are certainly many techniques that are better than others.

    • @patrickfarley8036
      @patrickfarley8036 6 лет назад +4

      I have never heard of "academically correct" drumming, however there are standardized methods and some gigs require they be met. For instance when I was in the Army and auditioned for the post Army band, I was rejected because I didn't have the proper "drum corp" type training although I had played in a High School marching band. It was a small school and we worked out our own routines and arrangements, and we sounded good enough to win some city wide awards. However, we were not "taught or trained" to the approved methods the U.S. Army requires.
      Mind you that lack of training never kept me from making money as a drummer for live performance or recordings, just the Army!
      So take that for what it's worth!

    Can cheap electronic drums become as custom as your configuration?

  • @jacobwalker4163

    I spent 8 years in tennessee department of corrections relearning to play open handed, tho it didnt take nowhere this long to learn but i am almost (almost) as comfortable open as i am crossed. I like the freedom of my right hand being able to go to a bell or tom while keeping the left on hihat and left to snare (if youre going to do the random throwing in of bells, toms, etc.). 8 years with no drums and came out better than when i went in. I never stopped mentally practicing. Yep drove my cellies crazy, but hey despite what the movies portray i was never in danger of being decapitated for air drumming. T.d.o.c. was certainly no "American Me".

    But why does the bass drum need to be on the left?

    • @harrymiree
      @harrymiree  7 лет назад +4

      Excellent question dude sir. The short answer: it doesn't! I just keep it to the left because it at least creates the illusion of a more traditional kit (with a kick that appears centered relative to the rest o' the gear), which (1) helps me fit on drum risers and (2) helps my bosses feel like they've hired a real drummer and not some goober who doesn't know how to make drums look like they looked on MTV when we were kids. Make it your own though, dude! Thanks for the query \m/

    I started playing and figured if I'm right handed, I should build up my coordination and strength with my left. It worked out great for metal. 8 months ago I decided I should play with right hand and now more syncopated bears I can easily do with right hand, left hand for steady locked in down beats. Very versatile, easy can switch now, 3/4 polyrms

    1. This works amazingly
    2. Get a cheap electronic kit and put the components wherever you want.
    3. It isn't cheating any more than jazz drummers weren't cheating just because they didnt wear bass drums on their back, crash cymbals on their knees or snares hanging from their shoulders.
    4. Drums are only set up the way they are because of preference, tradition, and mechanical limitations.
    5. Seriously go try this. I've played for 20 plus years and switching to this set up took me from a decent bar drummer to good enough to fool most people in to thinking im really good.

    Dude, i just recently set up my electronic kit like this. It doesn't care where the pedals are. I have played for 20 years and this one weird trick seriously doubled my ability in about two days of playing. My left arm is no longer trapped and apparently it is good at stuff. I wasted so much time on baggage held over from mechanical limitations.

    great, i love originality. sometimes fear stops us from doing something great. this guy just reinvented the wheel in front our very eyes and we don't worship the guy and induct him into the hall of fame. you are in my top 5 drummers b/c of this man.
    1-Thomas Lang (drumming scientific method) 2-dave weckl (creativivity, soul, mind and spirit 3- Tommy Igoe (groove essentials) 4- Jared Falk (online drumming father) 5- harry miree ( the chosen DUDE).
