The Very Hungry Pups

- Making the wolf pups come to life in the upcoming Slough Creek episode has been our focus for much of the past eight months, from the beautiful 3D models and animations created by our partner GIM to the sophisticated AI behaviors that our lead developer Tommi has been designing and building. We’re still very deep in development, with much more to do before Slough Creek is ready for release, but the pups are shaping up well enough that it’s time for a sneak peak - assuming anyone out there is interested. ;)
So today’s devblog video looks at a few aspects of the pups, mainly around eating. The pups, of course, are very keen on food and will approach either parent who has food to share, whining and food-begging, until the parent regurgitates some tasty chunks. We’re using a combination of animations, blendshapes (small mesh animations on the pup’s face and ears), and Look IK to create believable behaviors. While there’s lots of refinement still to do, it’s coming along, and well on our way to meeting Tommi’s goal to make the pups as adorable as possible.

While we are very focused on developing WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, we also are deeply grieved and angry about the killing of George Floyd and the larger issues of systemic racism and oppression in the United States. Dave and Susan live in Minneapolis/St Paul where the protests are affecting everyone, as they should. We hope that the sorrow, rage, and ugliness of these last weeks ignites deep and lasting change in our neighborhood and ripples out to the world.

We have released the first episode of WolfQuest 3: Anniversary Edition (Amethyst Mountain) for PC/Mac on Steam and itch.io, as Early Access. While in Early Access, we are updating the game frequently with more features, multiplayer, and ultimately the Slough Creek episode with pups. The mobile version will come after the game is completed on PC/Mac platforms. We’ll then resume development of the next episode, Tower Fall (DLC).

Ok but seriously, these pups are absolutely amazing and I'm already in love (there's so many of them aaaaah)! And the new features - calling them back into the den is so cool and will be 100% useful! Everything just look so good and great and I'm so happy with it :O

I think WolfQuest offers gamers a fantastic and beautiful view into the life of one of nature's most misunderstood animals. When you count up to eight pups and completely lose it, because you remember them saying more pups could now be possible in a litter but actually SEEING it makes you want to protect them even more than before. -You never thought it was possible but it just means it's gonna hurt more if one gets snagged.

The pup models, the pup sounds, the new music, the flowers in the background, the new emotes, them going inside the den, WolfQuest is just so amazing! I don't have words to describe how excited I am and how much I appreciate your work, but I can say that you guys are doing a spectacular job and that your game is absolutely beautiful. I hope I can have a huge litter of pups as I noticed there were at least nine of them at the end. Keep up your amazing work!!! XOXO

I LOVE the fact you can tell them to go into the den! And I like how it’s not all at once, which means you’ll still have to be on guard for the pups who haven’t made it inside the den yet.

I would really appreciate if there was an option to pause in-game time - pups don't get hungry, predators don't show up, pups don't gain weight, no quest progress - in order to take wolf pack screenshots. I've been trying to screenshot each of the pup colours in the original, but coyotes keep showing up ^^;

Absolutely adorable, the updates to the AI really are making them seem more alive than ever
Woah, the first couple of seconds the pup looked like a rock- but then I studied it, and it was the most realistic thing ever! I love it! :3 I am going to be so happy to see which pups are more like the “alphas” while others are the more submissive ones! AAAAA! You all are doing so great!

This game is more than a game its love and pain ( when your pups die). the person who says this game is stupid has never played it and things that are 100 times better, starting with the body shape of the wolf. Yay!! I'm so happy we got a pup update. Pups have always been the part of wolfquest that was wild. I'm really glad that they are going to have emotions like your mate now!! When I'm playing I do feel like a real wolf and part of that is because of my mate. The eye contact and the emotes make the game so much more fun. I think they look amazing so far in game and I can't wait to raise some of my own.
One question- Will the quests for raising your pups be different to match the behavior of the new Ai?

Firstly, I love the pups. You know in the old game and you just had an achievement picture saying you've got pups and you couldn't tell what colour your pups were, for example you might have named a white pup shadow. Why not have a profile picture for each of your pups so you know what colour it is and what gender it is. Hope this helps.
Secondly, I think that you guys are just amazing. You and your team work tirelessly to create this excellent game for us and it is great! You're hard work is paying off!

I've been playing wolfquest for years, and I am so grateful to you guys for making a new edition of it and continuously working on it. It makes me happy to see one of my childhood games getting good treatment and revamping by the devs!

Absolutely fantastic, the pups look amazing and the ability to call them back into the den is going to be super useful for hunting and protecting your pups from other predators and wolves. The amount of pups you have too ! thats exciting and terrifying

Can I just say this game is like I can’t even describe how in love I am with this game the dens are amazing the pups are amazing and I was in shock when I bought the game and saw the detail like WOW there has been so much more improvement since 2.7 and I have a suggestion maybe instead of completing the game you can grow your pups and continue with a pack and then have more pups but with more wolves aka ur first litter it’s just a idea it’s already amazing ❤️everyone appreciate how hard they are working btw wolf quest could we go in the den if possible?
We would love to keep adding to the story. Maybe someday the pups can grow up completely but it will take time. Tower Fall (a whole new episode/map. DLC) will continue life with pups but they still won't be fully grown.
This is a whole new game now, with new questions to come with it. Hats off to you guys for all the work you’ve done to make the new wolfquest the best version of itself that it can be, hope you guys continue to do what you do and stay safe out there in these trying times.
Oh man, being able to send the pups inside the den is SUCH a big relief! That'll make everything WAY easier when it comes to dealing with trouble, heck.
My one thought is that it might be nice to have some situational options for that? Maybe a difference between a "I need to go hunting so wait in the den for me to get back" bark and a "THERE'S A BEAR COMING GET IN THE DEN NOW" bark? It def makes sense for the pups to take their time but having an "urgent" option would be good too. Maybe if you overuse it, the pups would stop taking you seriously and would get slower and slower about getting in the den? Idk, just spitballing ideas now xD

Those puppies are so adorable! I do like it how you can get the puppies a lot safer from those pup snatchers by having them go into the den to keep them safe. Much better then the old version where you never do that.
