Okay so whoever posted this…thank you from the deepest parts of my musical soul! After the post of Vinnie’s jaw dropping solo yesterday I was thinking if there were any Zappa concerts (full concerts) with Vinnie? Today I get home from an absolutely grueling work day to find this entire show! Thank you so much!
Frank Zappa concerts are the main reason Humankind needs to invent a method to travel in time imo. These videos of Frank's shows are the next best thing. Saw this lineup about a month earlier at the Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta. He really loved to please his audiences no matter where or when he played. Unlike most bands, no two shows/setlists were alike. Two bass players? Who does that? Frank Effing Zappa that's who. Thx for posting.
Everything about this oozes not only genius, but an exemplary example of the best equipment available at that time. The harmonic feedback on Zappa’s amp alone, you couldn’t buy these days leaving not only a genuine genius, but an entire industry of music instruments that will never be duplicated again. So professional….
I saw Frank at his annual Halloween shows at the Palladium in 77 & 78. So grateful I got to. They were outrageous. I must say 77 was out of this world... 2nd row!
Keep in mind that this band was comprised of 2 keyboardists, 3 guitarists, a drummer, a percussionist and 2 bass players! What a funky line-up. Vinnie on drums! Great band and a fantastic show. Zappa's guitar work is sublime on a strat that Hendrix burned on stage! (during Yo Mama)
Is this the first Zappa unit to forego horns? Seems like since the beginning there was always that added brass (or woodwind) sound until Joe's Garage and the return to the "classic" rock lineup. Not sure exactly how I feel about it since Zappa's music always sounded very good with wind, but obviously all the performances are stellar (as close to perfect as you can get with stuff so heavily composed while still having room for improv)
@@newusernamehere4772 Actually, the very early Mothers were just guitar/bass/drums, with the addition on the second album of keyboards and woodwinds, and then progressively more people got added. And then the 1975-76 band had only one saxophone, then the next band had no horns (except for the NYC run documented on Zappa In New York, which had the Brecker brothers and Tom Malone as special guest performers). Then came the band with Adrian Belew and Terry Bozzio, which also had no horns, then this one. Then every band from here until 1988 had no horns, except for Bobby Martin occasionally playing French horn or saxophone.
Little House i Used to Live just shows Frank ABSOLUTE GENIUS. His music gives you the palate of colors and the subject to create your own visualization to bring pleasure and free your mind. You must bring the clean canvas.
Zappa's revolutionary approach to music, business and getting the music to the fans CANNOT be overstated. Xlnt performance, and MY GOD THOSE GUITAR SOLOS
You can love him, you can hate him, but you can never ignore him. I for one love him ;) Just like so many said here and in other posts: he changed my life and point of view in so many ways
Dweezil said about the style of playing of his father : the right hand was like a picking chicken and the left hand was a big spider walking on the neck. . . . . . . . I think it is a good définition of Zappa s style. ... What a genius ! !!

I was at this concert when my wife and lived in Ridgewood NJ. The Capital was ana amazing venue. Zappa was a friggin' genius. You can literally listen to the same song (any song) ten times and find something you didn't find before - every time.
Oui c'était un génie et je pense que le vingt ème siècle a connu à travers lui son meilleur musicien. Je ne me laisse pas de l'écouter, bref je le venére
Zappa is my answer to the question 'if you had front row seats for ANYBODY, who would go hear'? people have told me the beatles, mozart, elvis, etc...but, my choice is Frank...even though i heard him live 4 times, i'd still pick him...i walk out of his shows just in awe. I'm a deadheadwho just loves that music, and i'm also a person who thinks the best music ever is the beatles, but my best live show was the stones in oakland in '89...but every time i saw zappa i was in the presence of genius, and every hair on my body stood up, my senses heightened, and i would walk out of those shows so impressed
Have seen close to 1000 shows in my life, the one that stands out above all is Frank's last show in the US, 3-25-88 with Hot Tuna opening. Was 10th row dead center right on Frank, with laser focus on every note he played. Ferocious 10 piece orchestra, that was the show of a lifetime.
Yes, well of course. The grand master of modern music as understood by pygmies, ponies, maybe not presidents (except for the Czech Republic's leader), boogie men and what's out there! How do you get your water so dark? Cos I'm I'm paranoid, I'm very paranoid. For me, he had the perfect balance of madness, monster movies, pure genius, searing, slashing, singing, soaring, sublime, sweet tone solos coupled with innovative melodies which serve as brain food for me daily, all intertwined in conceptual continuity, colourfully and unabashedly presented. In other words, Music and Frank Zappa are the best.
I saw this amazing band in San Bernardino, CA, 1978, still got the ticket stub, it read, "Frank Zappa and 5 guests" which was the band members, no opening act..
Frank’s sense of time was astounding. He needed virtuoso drummers, in order to keep up with those incredible guitar solos and complex musical structures. This was one of many great lineups. For me, the Roxy-era lineup was the one, but really, we’re spoiled for choice.
Really? I don't see what is so incredible about the solos, a lot of times he is off-key, lets unnecessary feedback in, takes "shit I'm out of ideas" pauses. Like, I'm sure Zappa is a legend, but as a first time listener I just don't...get it. He's certainly charming, has a great voice and commands great presence as a frontman, he is entertaining, but I don't see the whole guitarist perspective.

I believe ( my opinion only ) Frank is one of the very few that knew how to use an SG to it's full capacity... he ( Frank ) can rip my head off with the way he plays it... I'm a Tele' and Straty man myself, but I just love the sounds Frank got from the SG.. :-)
Nous sommes en France et pourtant il y ya 80 commen'ts en anglais et en spanfrench ! Quand à Mr ZAPPA, C'EST D'UNE CONTINUITÉ CERTAINE ET "RÉELLE." HAFID
Some of these songs are still so funny I laughed my ass off 🤣 and uncle Frank's playing gave me goosebumps. If his guitar playing doesn't inspire you as a guitarist then maybe you should switch to a broom.
He lets bluesy Denny Wally stretch out in this show. Oh Frank, every show different, every show a gem. Only got to see you 12 times from 80' on. A little late to the party. Miss you long time.
And they make us wait years on end for a new live Zappa releases when they have gold like this lying around already that can be converted to audio releases.. simply incredible. Don't worry guys.. we'll finally get to hear the Halloween 1978 full shows in HQ for example, by 2030 a.d at this rate if we're lucky.
I've listened to live Frank for years now and love it all but there is something supernatural about the way he locked in with Vinnie. It's like a real one brain controlling both players type of thing. Music really is the best!
I saw the Poughkeepsie, NY show (Oct. 20) on this tour a week later...stood on our chairs the entire night center stage second row - will never forget it...
The. very best. And he could do it live better than on vinyl. I saw this tour. A 2 hour concert with no breaks or intermissions. A one hour encore. All that material and probably more. No one else could do that.
It took me ages to recognize him. I've never seen VC play match grip before (or look anything like that before). He must have left right after this tour because Terry Bozio is credited for the Sheik Yerbouti album.
Colaiuta stayed with Zappa until the end of 1980. Sheik Yerbouti was recorded before this with Terry Bozzio in early 1978 but wasn't released until 1979.
the magic concert, my favorite, sheik yabouti and joes garage were the only albums i had, listened to them for 20 years b4 i got any other material, i know every sound combination, they were all banned in south africa in the apartheid years, the most talented band i ever heard in my whole life time
You should listen to The Ritz show. Absolutely Frank and the bands greatest performance. After seeing more than 25 Zappa shows this show is considered his great by many and myself.Got to stand directly in front of Frank. What he did on guitar that night could never be duplicated. He used his Hendrix Strat for much of the show,Jimi used a little can of lighter fluid were as Frank used a tanker truck of Jet fuel.
Super fine post (THANK YOU!) of a little documented group in the huge universe that was F.Z.'s universe... 1sty- Vinnie !!!! the last great drummer he employed ... BUTTTT - ALL of Tommy Mars's synths sound dated... ya ever hear folks tryin' to capture that magic with digital? Added bonus of Denny Wally's always super slide guitar work...Anywho those aside Zappa's solos are ON FIRE! and his interplay w/ Mr. Colaiuta (Easy Meat) is unparalleled anywhere and subsequently. Also tunes tunes featured are sadly on the cusp. of F. Z.'s grim worldview and unapologetic misogyny become the reporting focus minus any of the satire and humour that made his all too accurate observations palatable. I mean if we wanted Talkinghead, CNN of the Street, drone style tuneage we all could switch to Hipraphop.
My dad told me to check out FZ many years ago because I was really into Mars Volta and newer prog+jam groups. I didn't want to type in "Frank Zappa" on youtube because I'd get his most popular videos and singles - I needed to see a live show. This was the first one that came up, and I remembered someone told me like 6 years prior VC was their fav session drummer. After hearing the first opening drum fills and guitar solo in Persona Non Grata, I was sold and I've been up &down Frank's discography, and I've got to see Dweezil.
Meeting Dweezil is one of my favorite memories. I remember it vividly. Same when I messaged him on Instagram asking what key Black Napkins was in and what the chord progression was for it and having him respond. He’s one of the most upstanding musicians of all time and I appreciate everything that man does to keep his father’s music alive. I’d see 5000 more times if I had the chance. Frank’s also just been my biggest influence in my entire life.
Wow. The more I listen the more I'm amazed. What a great solo in Suicide Chump. I own all of Zappa's albums as well as lots of bootlegs but there's always great shows like this one that pop up. ZAPPA'S MUSIC IS THE BEST.
Saw Frank in maybe '80--'82? I was ccuky to see the lineup he had--Bozio on drums--Ponty on violin--Tom Fowler on Bass--Malone on trombone--Napoleon Murphy Brock and others--can t'recall all of them. And his setlist was more to my liking--it was Chicago at the Uptown theater--Most of the ones you'd want--Peaches n Regalia...heavy list from Overnite Sensation--Disco Boy--Torture Never Stops--Titties n Beer--Illinois Enema Bandit--guess you could say it the Live From New York tour.
What an amazing show I saw them with this ensemble what a rocking teenage combo they were amazing brings back so many memories why I trip my balls off watching this right now😮😂❤❤ now
A month ago I was watching this concert... I was going in chronological order for a while ( it takes me about 4 months to recycle all Frank's music ) now I just randomly pick out something of the man's great work.
Hi Ziggy. meslegod I'm not sure what you want me to answer, but I'm happy to if you can explain a little better please? Am I missing something too :-/ maybe we can work it out together.
Zappa played two shows sometimes. Same date/venue, but always a different show. Sometimes only a couple changes, other times a completely different playlist altogether. This stop on the '78 World Tour did in fact have an early show and a late show, and videos exist for both.
Johnny, you need to get in touch with all the virtuoso musicians who treasured their time with Frank Zappa. They were practicing 6-10 hours a day thinking this was highly crafted complex music written by one of the centuries great composers. They need your astute musical analysis to inform them that they were only playing horse shit. They need to know that you were the only one who could use his penetrating knowledge of Zappa to figure out what the rest of us couldn't realize. thanks for devoting yourself to his music and understanding his classical influences so you could let the air out of all of us who were so deluded!
This the late show. The early show set is also available here on youtube, the title is identical but don't be fooled folks, there's two of them !! :):)
Victor Coral i know its like there is a God. God of Music Frank Zappa. Of all the show ive been to starting from the Roxy era74 to all the Halloween shows since 74,various other show in the tri state area,THE RITZ,i have never seen Frank so animated as he was this night. If they would only release the Ritz videos.
SWEEEEEET synth sound on Sy Borg...... thought it was george duke playing. excellent version of suicide chump too...... if you had to guess the guitarist, you could pick frank in a mere two to four notes :)
My favorites stuff of Vinnie was in 79 especially when they were in Europe I got the show from the Apollo Manchester England '79 it's amazing called "whole lot of compression". It's hard to say exactly where Terry Bozzio went after Zappa I mean I know he started playing for the band UK with John wetton and Eddie jobson in 79 (after my favorite drummer bill bruford left and went back to King Crimson) and then he went on the missing persons with his sister but what did he do in 78?
1978 I saw FZ in Copenhagen for the first time right before this recording taken back in the US. Terry was laying down the beast. Now .. I do not want to play favorite. But Vinnie .. I think we both are on the same wavelength .. :-) Ohh and I am sure that you got a kick out of both seeing Patrick and Arthur on this cut.. Patrick of course went on to play with Terry in missing persons and their brief stardom with that outfit
Frank is the Dali, Picasso and Van Gogh of guitar. Traditionalists don't get it. Shredders don't get it. Blues players don't get it. I once saw a documentary where Picasso drew a woman from behind with just a few strokes of a brush. Frank had that ability with guitar, and then he could also paint a swirling night sky full of stars or a bendy clock. I am constantly amazed by how original and listenable, surprising and shocking his guitar could be. I think this video is from a time when he was close to his peak. He stopped playing regularly not long after this, and he never regained his mastery (although he always remained startlingly relevant).
The guitar and rhythm stuff happening between 10:10 and 10:25 is the kind of thing where I'd do "yea, that's a riff for a new bad ass song." Soooooo cool, hearing Zappa solo is inspiring as hell.
Love Ike Willis when he wears a knit hat remind me of the Cosby Kids you know which one I'm talking about I think we could all relate to that one😅😅😂😂😂❤❤❤

Nous sommes en France et pourtant il y ya 80 commen'ts en anglais et en spanfrench ! Quand à Mr ZAPPA, C'EST D'UNE CONTINUITÉ CERTAINE ET "RÉELLE." HAFID
This is my first time hearing Zappa live. Never too late to understand his magic, I guess. Here we go.
Three years later, how has it been? What did you dig in particular?
23:37 You can tell half the band started to play Honey Don't You Want a Man Like Me, which usually came after easy meat.
Beautiful how they segue into Muffin Man from Camarillo Brillo at 1:30:00
Here I am again... can't get enough of Frank!
I saw these shows , the Palladium in NYC as well ... too much fun .. way different than todays concerts .. Miss you Frank !
Grandiose. J'aime beaucoup cette formation période Joe's Garage, Yellow Snow ici impeccablement executé, ma-gni-fique !
What a good surprise to hear Zappa playing guitar as always at the beginning of everything Music is the best
I've listened to live Frank for years now and love it all but there is something supernatural about the way he locked in with Vinnie. It's like a real one brain controlling both players type of thing. Music really is the best!
Should I leave you two alone😅.
FVZ' MUSIC...MY RELIGION
I saw the Poughkeepsie, NY show (Oct. 20) on this tour a week later...stood on our chairs the entire night center stage second row - will never forget it...
Easy Meat guitar solo is outstanding. Always great to hear FZ burn on the guitar, to my ears the Gibson SG suits him well (I'm not an equipment geek).
Saw this tour in London Hammersith Odeon...20 years and lovin it...superb band he that period
The. very best. And he could do it live better than on vinyl. I saw this tour. A 2 hour concert with no breaks or intermissions. A one hour encore. All that material and probably more. No one else could do that.
Vinnie (in this case), Terry, Chad - doesn't matter, plug one in and poop your pants. FZ always had GREAT DRUMMERS.
Vinnie was perfect fit if ever there was one...
Bob Kalkman Don't forget, Ansley, and Chester.
Bob always
Bob Kalkman there a great drummers, but Vinnie is the man !!
Kinda young,
Kinda wow, of COURSE I'LL INTRODUCE YOU TO WARREN
It looks just like a Telefunken U -47
With leather?????😁😁
Amazing, Sy Borg is incredible, the Peter Wolf solo is so good. FZ chillin'/fuming for the duration
Frank Zappa, un artista genial e irrepetible. Solo él era capaz de crear esta música.
*I turned 13 years old on this Friday October 13th 1978. What a great belated birthday present!*
Peter Wolf on moog solo on Sy Borg! Lovely
dont know what im more impressed by, zappa or whoever is on drums
Haha... Whoever is Mr. Vinnie Colaiuta.
a fucking drummer,of the highest order.
en même temps on n'entend guère les autres musiciens
It took me ages to recognize him. I've never seen VC play match grip before (or look anything like that before). He must have left right after this tour because Terry Bozio is credited for the Sheik Yerbouti album.
Colaiuta stayed with Zappa until the end of 1980. Sheik Yerbouti was recorded before this with Terry Bozzio in early 1978 but wasn't released until 1979.
I would pay big money to get a drum cam of Vinnie during his time with Zappa put on youtube.
Hell yeah .. this shot is right after Vinnie took over after Terry .. and notably is that Patrick is there together with Arthur ..
the magic concert, my favorite, sheik yabouti and joes garage were the only albums i had, listened to them for 20 years b4 i got any other material, i know every sound combination, they were all banned in south africa in the apartheid years, the most talented band i ever heard in my whole life time
You should listen to The Ritz show.
Too good. What a treat to have been there!
Frank Zappa at his best time 1978 with best line up
Super fine post (THANK YOU!) of a little documented group in the huge universe that was F.Z.'s universe...
You nail it
vue en concert en 1979 a lyon en france concert magnifique 3 heures de concert de pur bonheur rip mr zappa
vc's playing here is purely sick, pushin frank all over the road....love it
He was one of a kind. I really started listening carefully and was amazed at how intricate his music was. One of a kind. Miss him too.
Thank you for this! I saw this same show at the Uptown Theater in Chicago right around this time, great, thanks again!
I saw the Mars Volta live once and it was immediately clear to me that Omar the guitarist was influenced by Frank.
Vinnie!!! On drums & seal noises here.
Frank Voltage
In a band full of great musicians, Vinny C. really stands out. What a talent! And only 22 years old here!
Ike and Vinnie are so good
Yes Vinnie played with Jeff Beck, Frank has spawned a lot of musicians Adrian blew etc.
Wow. The more I listen the more I'm amazed. What a great solo in Suicide Chump. I own all of Zappa's albums as well as lots of bootlegs but there's always great shows like this one that pop up. ZAPPA'S MUSIC IS THE BEST.
Brings back memories of those “toasty” Saturday nights, the best time to appreciate The Zap !
What a "dream" gig ... that had to be the most fun any of those guys EVER had !!!!
Over the course of his life and career, he mastered damn near every style of music. Created some that will never be replicated,
I've always been a big fan of The Mothers: Ruth, George, Ian, Napoleon, Tom, Bruce, Ralph, and Chester edition. This teenage ensemble comes close.
good gawd. just masterful. talent all around. vinny is a savage
Little did we know at the time that Vinnie Colaiuta would become one of the world's best drummers.
CharNewc Terry Bozzio came equally close...
if zappa hires you, you're already the world's best something.
if zappa hires you, you're already the world's best something.
He’s amazing in this performance
What an amazing show I saw them with this ensemble what a rocking teenage combo they were amazing brings back so many memories why I trip my balls off watching this right now😮😂❤❤ now
A month ago I was watching this concert... I was going in chronological order for a while ( it takes me about 4 months to recycle all Frank's music ) now I just randomly pick out something of the man's great work.
Hi Ziggy. Please, don't treat me like a war ciminal,as Frank used to say,:) and answer me this..On one footage after Easy meat follows Bamboozeled by love, and on the
other after Easy meat follows Honey Don't You Want A Man Like Me,and the
time and place are the same..CAPITOL THEATER 10/13/1978
..Apperantly,i'm missing something out..Write me please...Thanks!
meslegod I'm not sure what you want me to answer, but I'm happy to if you can explain a little better please? Am I missing something too :-/ maybe we can work it out together.
Zappa played two shows sometimes. Same date/venue, but always a different show. Sometimes only a couple changes, other times a completely different playlist altogether. This stop on the '78 World Tour did in fact have an early show and a late show, and videos exist for both.
Thanks for the reply and explanation.
I was at both these shows, still have the ticket stubs. Not sure if this was the 7 ;30 or 11 ;30 show. Where can I find the other one?
The first song is INSANE. Nothing else like it.
This is absolutely phenomenal!! 🤘 Love Zappa's music! 🙏
A ouoi sert ce commentaire •ZAPPA is the best, un •c'est tout
Zappa made the most out of the oddest sounds &, also made the most amazing music.
Just so everyone knows the magician playing the drums like water is Vinnie Colaiuta
Runaway Mindtrain Vinnie Colaiuta
kinda young kinda wow!
@@spicacolorado lmao was just gonna put that, saw you beat me to it and laughrd my ass off
Un très grand parmi les grands. Un musicien qui s’était moqué des petits rockeurs... Je l'adore....
SWEEEEEET synth sound on Sy Borg...... thought it was george duke playing. excellent version of suicide chump too......
if you had to guess the guitarist, you could pick frank in a mere two to four notes :)
Too bad Carlos Santana could play like this
Johnny!! Enjoy life on the surface. This is obviously far deeper than you will ever go in life or music. God bless you.
Man, I love that solo on Easy Meat!
The ferocity of Frank’s improvisation has remained as unduplicatable!
the zappman was a bizzare creative genious ...
Man I loved those long freeform 'tuneup' intros.
Fucking classic, every one.
After one minute i look at my watch and this concert lasts 1h 42 mn. There are painful moments in life.
Uno de los mejores shows que escuché y ahora ví en mi vida..
King crimson, Zappa y Van der graaf Generator.........Son lo mejór que hubo, hay, y habra por siempre!!!
Uhummmlllläther 😎
God, do I miss Frank & his bands !!
Nothing like the music of today. True passion and freedom!
I could listen to a recording of 10 hours of just Zappa tuning up before the show.
uhhh very nice hes playing jimi's old burned strat at one houre mark! :-)
+acidhead1001 with new neck!
I like jimi but I don't think he held a candle to franks guitar playing.
Ned Narly Shut the fuck up!
frank is a wizard, where jimi is more of a sorceror, ahaha.
@@ggallintedtalk he's right,Jimi was no Frank,
The guitar and rhythm stuff happening between 10:10 and 10:25 is the kind of thing where I'd do "yea, that's a riff for a new bad ass song." Soooooo cool, hearing Zappa solo is inspiring as hell.
On point! Steve Vai came from this influence. His music is inspirationally uplifting.
Love Ike Willis when he wears a knit hat remind me of the Cosby Kids you know which one I'm talking about I think we could all relate to that one😅😅😂😂😂❤❤❤
Then at 1:31:00 Zappa puts on his guitar and you just know he's going to be brilliant
