BMW M4 vs Formula 4 Racecar

- I'm at Brands Hatch to have a go in a Formula 4 open-wheel, single-seat racecar, and before that it's some warm up laps in the BMW M4, but how do they compare?
There's no question the M4 is the 'faster' with 450hp to the 185hp of the F4 car, but when you factor in the aerodynamics, the grip levels, and the experience, how do they stack up?

I did this experience earlier this year and absolutely loved it! The instructors were fantastic and really bought the Racing Driver out in me. Although expensive, I'd do it again and again
Do they add a speed a limit on the F4 ? Or do they let you drive to the very edge

Did this last month (F4 Master Experience). Did a 55.78. (Average speed ~ 78mph). So while they arnt crazy fast, theres nothing quite like driving a single seater. Especially if you have not done it before.

Those F4 cars redline was about 5k very low and I bet more like 150bhp. Looks restricted.

it just shows how a proper race car works,I mean 'only 180 odd bhp' in a road car on that track would be very normal and slow,however chuck it into a car designed to do one thing and bingo you get the feeling for just how low weight,aero and race suspension and race tires come together to be better than the sum of its parts.
Use to say in the hotel there often when in my early 20s when I use to contract around greater London. Use to love finishing early and just sitting in the stands on open days etc. Always fun.

Why aren't you buying a car like that F4 car? Its nice to have and probably you can store it at a track garage or something!

The elevation changes in brands hatch seem to be crazy, that track scares me, it really does, especially the main course, but the smaller Indy lap that we see in this video has a lot of it too.
Tim, bet it was a fantastic experience , I wish I was young and healthy and could do stuff like this. Thanks for filming and sharing this, I envy you. That's not saying you don't deserve these experiences or anything like that. I'm saying I envy you but am very glad you film and share this stuff. Thank you.

Those Formula 4's seem pathetically slow in a straight line...
They are for general public driving experiences, so they are turned down a lot! RPM etc.
They're still pretty slow in race trim haha

Its impossible to drive a F1 car slow, it will just stall.

You could hear the shortshift on every gear, but watching the shift lights it's obviously detuned that way for the experience.

How does the straight line acceleration compare in actual figures? Looks fun indeed..I think all track drivers should consider taking cordyceps for their sharpest reaction and concentration..Stay safe and fast.

Have you bought a McLaren BP23? It´s going to increase in value a lot.
You don't just "buy it", you get invited to buy it. I'm not sure if he could buy one even if he got invited because it'll be very expensive. The P14 is more interesting.
Maybe he´s got more money than we think ;) and he has had every modern McLaren except the P1 and 650s coupe, so maybe he got an offer to buy one.
I definitely think you need some custom colour/graphics scheme on the helmet Tim, something to go with the custom race suit. I'm thinking some in... blue maybe! 😊

These F4's aren't the same specification as the BRDC (British) F4's that raced a few years ago. Similar in every way, apart from these f4's have engine limiters and grooved tires on.

You drove so slowly the tires were colder when they come back to the pit than when you left the pit.
a go pro 5 would be good for the view, the camera makes it smoother but love this anyways 😁

That first corner has killed me so many times in Grid Autosport. But I noticed that there is a huge part of the track missing in real life. Or at least it looks like it.
That is the Indy layout for Brands, the GP is the longer layout which is what you were driving in the game.

Why do those f4 cars have road tires? I imagine slicks would improve it dramatically.
Wesley Green because these aren't true racing cars. These have been detuned massively to allow the public to try out and have a taste of driving a racing car. Most people going on experience days will not get anywhere near as much grip on racing tyres as they will not push hard enough to make them work, especially in winter. For the sake of the drivers and the driving school, road tyres are a far better idea as the cars aren't as hard to drive, aren't as likely to crash, and they don't need to change wheels and tyres anywhere near as often

Wesley Green no problem. Actually after another look, they look like wets rather than road tyres but the same largely applies. They're probably quite a hard compound it they'd wear out in 3 laps
It won't make that big of a difference for someone who never drove a F4 car before. Those slicks are made to push the most out of the car and is only a big advantage if you know the car. The people who drive these on trackdays have very little experience and it was quite damp on the track. It makes more sense.
well, not really. less grippy when cold, louder, harder to steer. Street tyres have a way bigger temperature window, that's why it makes sense to take them. As mentioned rain tyres would wear down in a couple of laps.
