- Formula 1 and the World Endurance Championship's LMP1 Hybrid class are both at the cutting edge of technology and speed, but how do the best cars from each of these worlds really compare? With the help of our exclusive 3D animations of both cars, Jake Boxall-Legge is your guide for a detailed look at the Mercedes W10 and the Toyota TS050, explaining how they differ both aerodynamically and with the incredibly advanced engine technology that is in use under the skin.
#LeMans24
the differences:
TS050 has doors
AMG W10 doesnt
Or a roof, or a windshield
Or running lights
it is not AMG F1, just F1: AMG is for Mercedes
Don't forget his majesty the windshield wiper
Coz f1 is way more hardcore and skilful if ur not talking bout how much hrs lol
Basically if you drive either you have your team mate to beat to be world champion.
mportusable well in the WEC your team mates drive your car too. It’s a fight between the #8 toyota and the #7 toyota, each have 3 drivers and if either wins Le Mans all 3 are the champions as it’s more about the team in the WEC.
Sounds like you're looking for a same-spec series.......

Karl S. how?!? Can you explain?!
@@carholic-sz3qv Sure. The Mercedes Team is the old Brawn GP Team. And they are the old BAR Team. And they have all Factorys and Facilitys in England.
So actually only the Money and a few Bosses come from Germany.
And the Toyota was build in Köln Germany. Thats where the old Toyota F1 Cars came from. Köln Germany is the Motorsport Brain from Toyota, and they used their old F1 Facilitys, to build the TS050.

You don't want that, Mercedes would be faster than light.
What would truly have helped is comparative lap times, acceleration times, top speed etc comparisons. I understand that they are different beasts, but I want to know what's faster, easier to drive, differences in materials, construction etc. What does LMP have to do differently to ensure 24 hrs flat out racing?
The aerodynamics piece was interesting, but the rest was essentially facts I could find out elsewhere.
Yes exactly , just reading facts and specs doesn't make for a very good comparison video . Maybe making some comments also on some off track things like bugdet , logistics would have made it better
I believe the Toyota is the easier to drive due to the awd traction, the F1 is the fastest overall
He gave top speed towards the end. The Mercedes is faster, 360km/h vs 330km/h.
2016 6 hrs of COTA fastest lap is at 1:47.052
2016 F1 USA GP fastest lap is at 1:39.877
2018 F1 USA GP fastest lap is at 1:37.392
2019 Indycar Classic fastest lap is at 1:48.895
P.S: Not sure if the 2018 spec LMP are faster than the 2016 spec
An f1 car is, qnd likely will be as long as the sport lasts, the fastest car around a trac in the world, and subsequently one of the hardest cars to drive due to the amount of sheer power in the engine and brakes. Jake Heke everything they touch turn to pussies
@@lansiman I hope this thread is just purely for satire.
@Jake Heke Group C ended in 1993. Since 1993, it has become more efficient to build a car with a smaller engine and less horsepower to make more room for aero, because we don't need bigger engines to hit insane speeds and a bigger engine burns more fuel meaning the car has to stop more often to refuel meaning a slower run overall. For road cars that follow the same principle, look at the Ford GT. First, they dropped the old 7 liter NA V8 because a 5.4 liter supercharged V8 was more efficient. Then, they switched to a twin turbo 3.5 liter V6 because the smaller size allowed them to design better aero. Because of the smaller, lighter engine, the new GT can outrun a Hellcat in a straight line, despite having about 70 less horsepower
@Jake Heke Yes, but why have a bigger engine when a smaller one does the job better?
@Jake Heke In the case of a car whose only purpose is to race, "better" means faster overall speed. A smaller, lighter engine allows you to lower the car's overall weight and gives you more space for aero. Like I said before, it also burns less fuel than a bigger engine, meaning fewer fuel stops, raising the car's average speed significantly
Ive always wondered how Aerodynamics compared between the LMP1s and F1s, two completely different looks aesthetically but still achieve such high downforce
LMP1 aero is extremely efficient compared to F1, and is much better suited to close racing.
Look up the battles between Porsche and Audi, and in the corners they don't seem to be bothered much with dirty air.
Though the tactics they used is very different to F1, so on track battles are rare.
Ortekk F1 aero is far, far superior to LMP1 aero though.
@@Tommmmmmmmmmmm F1 cars are definitely more intricate, and produce more downforce. But for efficiency it's nowhere close.
But that's down to regulations, and not to the skill of the designers.
@@Tommmmmmmmmmmm Nope they're not, sorry.
F1'S simplest solution so far would be closing the wheels it seems. It's not gonna remove alot of it, but it would reduce alot of stress and turbulent air on the front tires. Not sure what people would think about F1 cars with closed wheels though. 🤔

Have been waiting for a proper side by side comparison for ages. Brilliant.
and people say f1 is too predictable. hopefully the hypercar regs will liven it up a bit
Well, that's a completely different story. WEC LMP1 is predictable because there's no competitors, mostly because of dieselgate. Racing before that was way better and more unpredictable than F1 is/was. F1 is just predictable because one team does a better job and regulations are shit so there's not much action on track even when someone slips up.
I think the Supercar regs will end up like the old GT1 category. Good for a few seasons then die.

It's more the comparison of "both are the best in the world" instead of "they do the same thing, but differently".
Sprinting and marathons are two very different things. While both require the same basic concept, one requires the fastest times possible within the rules, while the other is about being the fastest while spreading out your energy over a long distance.
Except F1 cars MUST last 7 races without changes, more than Le Mans
Matteo Tommasi 7 races of 2 hours each. 14 hours of racing with repairs in between. That doesn’t compare to the flat out 24 hours of el mans. And that is just one race of the season.

@@haydid It is, but it's not the only 24hr race.
One’s a car, the other’s a spaceship with wheels
If anything this shows how regulated both LeMans and F1 are.
I’d prefer to limit only amount of fuel used and the obligation to publish all technical details 1 year after their first implementation.
That will create more relevance to everyday car technology (focus on maximum performance out of a limited amount of fuel) and it’ll give the fans more insight in the technical aspect of the sport. The publishing will accelerate technical improvements because teams can build on inventions of others. The year gap between implementation and publishing gives teams enough room to benefit from there own developments yet keeps them pressured to keep improving. A novelty will give you (only) a two year advantage.
At the moment F1 is all about managing tire temperature and aerodynamics. Both subject are very hard to comprehend. Even the teams don’t fully understand how to get the tires working for them.
This has been tried before, and it always consistently fail after a few years. No restrictions means rampant spendings to get the faster car, which makes the lower end teams drop out once they see that they no longer stand a chance, and then the series dies.
Restrictions are in place to stop exactly that, and to keep the racing competitive. Yet even then, with as relaxed as the rules are in lmp1 right now, you see that everyone has dropped out due to the ridiculous costs, forcing them to scrap the series and come up with a new one..which is going to be a lot more restrictive.
Excludos
Than maybe there should be restrictions on the aero of the cars too. The Engines can be bought at ‘relatively’ low costs for ‘B’ teams.
Developing better engines especially with fuel restrictions, will help producing better engines for normal cars too.
Formula 1 gave us ABS but that was ‘ruled out’ later on.
@@Conservator. There are restrictions on the aero of the cars. Several books worth of it. Both in lmp1, and especially in F1.
Yes, F1 has given us a lot of innovations, but that doesn't necessarily make for good racing or a good sport. Most of them, like abs, have been banned over the years to keep it interesting. A no restriction sport would be boring, and then it would die due to costs
Excludos
It seems like you favor F2 over F1.
I’m exaggerating a bit for clarity.
@@Conservator. From a pure racing point of view, F2 is miles better than F1 atm. Much due to how every car is practically the same, which leaves only the skills of the drivers left. That's not to say every sport has to be that way, and I certainly don't think F1 should be. However F1 these last few years have been exceedingly boring due to the aerodynamic making overtaking inaccessible, combined with the runaway success of the Mercedes cars that no one is able to compete with.
I am looking forward to the 2021 season where they are going to overhaul the entire rulebook, which further restricts the aerodynamics of the cars so they can much easier follow each other (and move over to using tires that more resembles what road cars use).

I think the F1 car would not last an entire 24hrs race
Think? They for sure won't.
Maybe if they drive Max 120km/h
Well, it's not made to last an entire 24h race
The LMP1 cars are monsters, even more when they are not restricted by rules, when they took the porche 919 and made it as fast as possible with no boundaries, it was even faster than a f1 car
Can you please stop calling it “weck?” Thanks.
i wanna see a f1 season with just these rules
1. no computer assist
2. if your driver dies in the race you're banned for 2 years.
Computer assists are banned for like 20 years lol
Loved the LMP1 Cars! especially the black and white TVR Racing Rebellion, saw it race at Silverstone and it's a pity these cars have gone now. As for F1 I have found it boring for many years I prefer the GT3 World Challenge.
Pisses me off how he calls it *wheck*
IT'S W-E-C GODDAMMIT
@LeTang Piola isn't bad.
WEC -> Weck
F1 -> Fwan
f1 ferrari sf90 vs mercedes w10 comparison plzzzzzzz
Easy ... Ferrari Race Engineer, "Merc is faster than you.... Merc is faster than you, please confirm."
One is a drag car, the other is a well balanced F1 car.
Closed wheels are always faster than open wheels aerodynamically
Faster on a straight line? Yes. Faster around corners? No.
funfact: both were better 20 years back.
Interesting and useful comparison. However, please use common units or convert when making comparisons, we heard ps, bhp, mega joules, kWh.
Nonsens comparison. The Toyota is made to drive 24 hour non stop. A F1 car is made voor +-300km races.
Its like compare a marathon runner with Usain Bolt.
The efficient engines of this year need to live up to seven weekends to not get a penalty. That is well over 3000km that the engine has to live
Comparing their different characteristics objectively without stating that one is better than the other isn’t non sense at all it’s just interesting to see how different cars built for different purposes work differently
F1 engines need to last 7 race weekends including 3 practice sessions and qualifying....
Runtime:
F1: 3K
P1: 5.4K
WEC is longer and under significantly more stress. F1 shorter and stress is different to that on FIA.
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks stresses on an F1 engine are arguably higher... Circa 750bhp from a 1.6ltr vs 500bhp from a 2.4ltr
I always thought the LMP1 cars are much bigger than F1 cars. The fact that it is actually the other way around is really mind blowing. I can't imagine LMP1 cars lapping Monaco and yet F1 cars which are much longer and wider doing it every years.
I thought the same but last year I visited Porsche’s museum in Stuttgart and I was surprised how small Porsche 919 LMP1 car was. Also Mercedes W10 is super long.
WEC - fun
F1 - boring, repetitive, controlled by team FIA-Mercedes
We should also have a more free engine selection a cars should be lighter.
P1 isn't much fun these days either. For similar reasons as F1.
@@filippoforni6781 There should
be multiple select configurations. Not this nonsense were Mercedes and Ferrari can rule the roost and whip everyone into touch.
FYI WEC is under FIA as well.
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks That actually wouldn't solve anything because whatever the most effective configuration is those 2 would find it and then continue to shit on the rest of the field anyways.
Can't say that was the most riveting video...
