No Doubt's early journey was marked by struggle, starting with personal tragedies, interband dynamics, and an initial record that failed commercially. Their story begins with siblings Gwen and Eric Stefani, raised in a music-loving family in Anaheim. They were influenced by ska music, leading them to form No Doubt with John Spence, who tragically took his own life in 1987. The band, shaken but determined, continued with Gwen taking on lead vocals.
Their self-financed debut album in 1992 garnered little attention despite their energetic performances. Eric's departure due to creative differences and depression further strained the band. However, they persevered, incorporating diverse influences into their music and refining their sound.
In 1995, their second album, "Tragic Kingdom," emerged after a tumultuous recording process. Hits like "Just a Girl" and "Don't Speak" propelled them to stardom, though the attention centered mainly on Gwen, causing tensions within the band. Despite internal challenges, the album's success defied industry expectations, eventually reaching diamond certification.
Their meteoric rise came with challenges as fame overshadowed band unity. Nevertheless, they embraced their success humbly, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the music industry. By 1996, they were outselling major acts, but remained grounded, with some members planning to return to college.
Their story is one of resilience, evolving from personal tragedies and industry setbacks to becoming one of the era's biggest bands. Through perseverance and musical experimentation, No Doubt carved their path, leaving a lasting impact on the music scene of the '90s.
Fantastic expository! As if I didn't already adore this band as is, I now have an even more newfound respect. The sharpest blades are battered the most I suppose. Well done all around.
Thank you! When I do a full hand history I’ll probably expand on some of those early days some more
@@rnrtruestories you guys are awesome!!
My ska band opened for no doubt in 1998. Tony and I hung out and exchanged emails for a few years. He’s a really cool fellow bassist!
His cousin Brad would come to our church student area and hang out. Very funny guy
No Doubt went to my community college. One time they showed the music teacher their music and he said “it’s good but it has no commercial viability..”
They would later return years later with a platinum record in hand..
Don't you love it when you have a passion and you finally get a break to expose your talents and the other notables & influencers come against you and mock your craft and you come out smelling like roses ?? And then they all STFU & go silent 😊
I'd say the music teacher gave them a huge compliment because music with commercial viability is usually inferior. While I think No Doubt is a pretty good band, what came after Tragic Kingdom shown a band trying hard to mimic the "effortless" succes of TK and hurting the quality of their music in the process.
Hey there. I was the bass guy in Tom's old band, Rising. Yes, we rehearsed next to N.D. [Slayer rehearsed in there once or twice as well] in the shadow of Angel Stadium in Anaheim, and that flyer was up on the bulletin board for a few weeks while Tom was still in our band [which was not 'fronted' by his sister, Gina, but by her husband, Mark Machovina, if by anyone - we all took turns in the spotlight], so despite all the interviews and what he told the rest of us at the time, it's obvious he'd decided to join them before he left us. Spence loved our band; there were little windows on the rehearsal rooms and he would watch us jam all the time, hollering and doing back-flips. That dude was so cool, and it was so sad what happened with him. Anyway, the guitar guy I got in there after Tom was great, but created tensions which ultimately killed Rising, which is too bad, because we were really good. I'm still in touch with everyone else from Rising, but Tom stopped returning calls and emails from me decades ago. No clue why, but whatever.
There were several interviews with Tom that the writer wrote his sister fronted the band
@@rnrtruestories Yeah, that's why I let you know what the real deal was.
Gina's also ridiculously talented. So's their brother John. There's a heavy preponderance of very good musicians in the family.
@@abracadaverous Indeed! Salamander was awesome. Super sweet folks too.
@@electricwizard3000are you still making music?
I'm a guy and back in '95 I was at a red light and got caught singing I'M JUST A GIRL IN THE WORLD THAT'S ALL THAT I'LL EVER BEEEE by the car next to me 😂
Yes do a full blown history on No Doubt!
yes give us all the gory details please 😄😁😁😁
Yeah 👍
"Tragic Kingdom" is one of the best albums of the 90s.
It's so good that radio stations still play the TK's singles today.
Thank you, Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, for making great songs for years. :)
Used to watch the video for Don't speak on MTV as a kid and think how attractive Gwen was but also a really good song.
I think all of us thought Gwen was really hot
Yeah Gwen was smoking hot no doubt lol 🥁
I saw No Doubt along with Bush and Goo Goo Dolls in 96. It was a fantastic concert!
Same here, Gwen was off stage laying on a fur coat watching Bush during their set. A hint of what was to come with Gavin.
Yes. The whole story, please. And thank you for this one.
You’re welcome. The consensus seems like to do the full thing
Gwen is 54 years old?? where did the time go?
Seriously. So glad i haven't aged in all this time. That must be hard for her
Back in 95, my high school set up a grad night for us at Disneyland. My friends and I all went and as we were walking around trying to decide what ride to go on next, we came across a live performance of these guys playing this weird music. We went over to check it out and saw this bleach blonde woman singing, jumping around on stage and climbing the scaffolding. We listened to about 2 songs and walked away saying that they sucked. Fast forward a few months later and all of of the sudden this song came on KROQ... It sounded super familiar. Turns out it was the band that we heard at Disneyland! I was totally blown away. I ended up buying their CD and absolutely fell in love with them. To this day I can't tell you why I didn't like them at first and why I switched on a dime to liking them overnight, but I can tell you that I'm still kicking myself for walking away from a No Doubt concert at Disneyland. Years later, they opened for U2 and guess what... I missed their show because my brother was late and I had his ticket... I only got to see their last song. I guess me seeing them live just isn't meant to be. 😔
You must live in a really wealthy area.
@@jeffreyval9665 I doubt it, that's typical southern CA living back then, when things were good.
@@jeffreyval9665Kind of a strange reply my dude. They’re remembering their own life gone by and you’re, out of the blue, dredging up resentments.
@williamechols2731 Must've been an expensive senior outing. Just saying it had to be a wealthy school district. Wth is so resentful about that??
@@jeffreyval9665 Just struck me as odd you read that story and your reply was based on what you imagined her family’s wealth was.
You’re right. I have no idea what you felt when you wrote your comment. It was just odd the first thing you thought about was how much money her folks had. Odd to me anyways. We all take in life in our own way.
Have a good one.
I just them last night at Coachella and they were so good!!!! Gwen knows how to rock the stage. Since I was a kid I wanted to see them live and I did and it lived up to the hype. Don’t speak was one my favorite song ever and to see it live 😭
I didn’t realize they were touring again. Anyone know how long it’s been since they last played live?
@@Spooky_515 I think they just reunited for Coachella.
Thank you for sharing Joel
Glen Stafani = DUDE
Did you get a second mortgage to go to that atrocity in the desert
I was lucky enough to see them in concert several times ( always awesome) I even got to see them in very small standing room only venue front row .
Saw them at Cattle Club Sacramento, Ca 1994
Great video for what was a great band. I loved their 90's/early 00's stuff. Now should do a video of the predicted sell out of Gwen stafani.
They're an awesome band I've been listening to them since middle school
I rememeber hearing just a girl for the first time, I was 14 and she became an icon overnight. Gwen totally defined the mid to late 90s, we all wanted to be her.
Yrs, yes, yes, a full blown feature on No Doubt would be great ❤
"Trapped in a Box" is actually my favorite No Doubt song and video.
Yes of course I would love a deeper dive on No Doubt.
Truly love your content! Love seeing this on a Sunday morning. One of my most favorite songs from No Doubt. I have two tribute tattoos to the band.
Wow, thank you!
I've loved this band since I was a preteen, it was amazing seeing them perform at Coachella yesterday.
Wow....Gwen Stefani was so beautiful back in the day when Tragic Kingdom came out.
Wonderful insight and Great timing with the Coachella Reunion, looking forward to Part 2!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Last night's show at Coachella was such a badass reunion
Coachella: Where great bands and musicians from the 80's and 90's go to embarrass themselves and the garbage "musicians" of the 2000's-today get their mediocrity validated by a bunch of rich kids that have no idea what real talent looks like.
@@jeffreyval9665ouch lol
@@jeffreyval9665how did they embarrass themselves? lol. It was a great show. I swear people will complain about anything.
@Mr-tu4cj Music has been complete garbage for almost 20 years, and these kinds of bands and musicians that are still performing in their 50's is ridiculous and especially at such a corporate and commercial artificial feeling thing like Coachella. A bunch of rich kids and celebrities thinking they're edgy.
I totally saw them at coachella yesterday too and tomorrow im gonna go see them at coachella!
she always gave me a rise lol love the underneath it all video
It's fairly simple No Doubt became huge because Gwen is a Star and has the 'It' factor. Just like in Hard Rock Sebastian Bach was a Superstar that sold that band Skid Row.
Yes I would like to see a longer video on the complete history of No Doubt, I feel like there's probably a lot to talk about.
I bought Tragic Kindom for my daughter when she was 8 years old. She loved it.
Thank you! Loved this band in the 90s-2000s, still love them today. Please do a full blown history!
Will do! Glad you enjoyed the video
I have no doubt that this was a good video
Thanks 😊
Gwen being hot im sure that helped
It is show business....
Kanal was punching above his weight when he hooked up with Gwen.
Yeah, that was really cool.. can't wait for part 2!
I remember seeing just a girl late late night on either insomniac theater or alternative nation and I loved the song the moment I heard it. I went to school and tried to describe it to my friends guys and girls how the song was awesome and the singer was gorgeous but everyone was just like ok and. Then the song blew up a few months later and they were all obsessed with No Doubt. I felt like chunk eating the ice cream and was like see I was trying to tell y'all I was telling the truth the whole time 😂
The first concert I ever went to was that Bush/No Doubt tour!
Full history would be awesome!
Sometimes I think I know everything about a band because the same stories always get repeated, but I'll click on your vid anyway because you always surprise me. Once again, you do not disappoint. Gwen is one of my all time favorite front(wo)men. Excellent research. Well done. 👏👏👏
Thank you
I saw them during the tragic kingdoms in West Palm Beach. They played I either the same star wars theme or the Darth Vader theme. It was my first concert ever.
Ugh. I hate when beautiful people get all that plastic surgery done. She was one of the hottest out there 😢
I didn't realise she had work done on her face.
@@NellieKAdabaLots.
Ya go full blown man. You do a good job. I'll be looking up your other stuff. Thanks 🤙
Yeah! Do the continued story!
born in 1986 and not many albums can make me as happy as Tragic Kingdom..they really knocked that one out. All killer no filler. Best CD Cover of the era too.. was just so COOL.
I would love to hear a full history of No Doubt.
Will do!
Great video my man. Roughly the same age as you and it’s just so cool to kind of go back and learn this stuff about the music from our younger years, kind of like a time trip. Keep up the good work, homey🤘🏼
Thanks
Gwen Stefani really hit the wall.
I saw No Doubt open for 311 in September of 95. My friends and I weren’t ever exposed to ska and we were a little perplexed. Gwen had an undeniable energy though. I’m glad we saw them before they went big.
this is a great channel , good job thank you..
Thank you! That means a lot!
I gave my greatest hits album to my 12 year younger sister. She used to listen to it every day
You should do a video about the whole story of No Doubt! Here in Argentina the band came to be known way after their 90s success. Mainly, with their version of the song “It’s my life”. Besides that song, people remember Gwen Stefani and not the band. Particularly due to songs like “Rich Girl”, “Cool” and “Hollaback girl”. That’s why I was a little bit surprised when I saw this video, as I had no idea about how popular was this band during the 90s.
Thanks
Where did the picture at 3:41 come from?! I think I had that car in high school too!
Oh yea man, this band was huge when I was in 7th and 8th grade. I used to listen to Magic Kingdom a lot, same with Goldfinger, lol.
Whats up with thumbnail gwen picture?! She look so great on coachella last week , must be bad photo angle
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
More no doubt! ❤
Yeah, do that No Doubt history video
Great video as always
Appreciate that
Gwen was such a a cute kid when she was at the Box Office at the Marqee club
Hard or fluff whatever you call them, this us how real music and rock music should always be: from the garage to $5 bar shows to infighting to member changes to venues to getting signed to being stars
All it does is grow your music and makes you better.
All this audition shows and no name rappers going viral is why music from the 2000s BLOWS
Music has been stuck at its lowest point in history for almost 2 decades, and it just keeps getting worse. The golden age for music was the 60's-90's.
Crazy how there’s no musicians in the music industry. Just a bunch of models dancing and lip syncing and of course no talent “rappers” that come and go
I saw them open up for 311 right before they got huge. It was at the now defunct Starwood on a side stage they had. I would have never thought they'd get that big that fast but when you got Gwen I guess it's inevitable.
I'd love another No Doubt video. 👽👍🏻
Got it!
I was just listening to Trapped in a Box last weekend 😂
No doubt was one of metal musician Fallon bowman’s influence

Tony was born in England. His parents were from India
Great job covering No Doubts rise to fame. Might as well finish their story
Sounds like a lot of people want it so I’ll have to write the rest of it
@@rnrtruestorieslooking forward to it even though most fans don’t like the way the band came to an end. Thus ND fans hate Gwen’s solo stuff but I was happy for her.
Totally. What happened next?
Played the autoharp? I play air drums and some air guitar. Too bad Gwen's mom and I didn't start our own band.
Who’s watching on a Sunday morning?
Your Mum.
But I just came up in a breeze….
I'd like to see the full history

All that surgery and she changed her entire energy. Women stop urselves!!
She used to look good before all the plastic
She looks how she wants. C’on. Nobody looks same for 30 years. Most important that her energy still incredible, she can perform shows like Coachella 1,5 hours jumping, running and singing at the same time. And vocal still good. Fantastic for women of her age and mother of 3 kids.
People don’t have to have the same “energy” for 30 years and anyway women can do whatever they want, especially Gwen Stefani
Definitely sad to see a natural beauty like her do that to herself. And yeah it certainly chips away at her confident persona.
😂 no@@hairisburning
Great vid
I don't know if it'd be possible to do a history on Mushroomhead, so many members come and gone, and in fact, currently only one original member is left
I did a story on them and slipknot a while back
What happened to the band summer camp? It’s just a Drawer away!!!
I thought Tony was born in the UK ? Please confirm.
you're right
Gwen sang backup for a couple Swim Hershal Swim songs. SHS should have gotten much bigger. They were much better than No Doubt.
Clearly they weren’t 😂
Am I the only one that loves tragic Kingdom but hates return to saturn?
Yeah I didn’t like their albums after tragic kingdom
Return of Saturn is good in my opinion, and Rock Steady is one of my favorite of their albums.
Please do Firehouse 😁
Already done but honestly I could do a more detailed video ruclips.net/video/8Dg6IoPV3cI/видео.htmlsi=xGRs_AJf0kAyHSuP

Stefani should so her surgeon for that cookie cutter hack job done to her face. Not sure why she think she needed to do that.
I saw them open for Fishbone way back when John Spence was the singer. They were a lot of fun. Though I was more on the punk side of ska, I always liked them. I can't stand Gwen's solo stuff, though.

"It's not a Steel Panther song." LOL!
Love me some steel Panther

That's a whole lotta BPA...
She needed no surgery done to her face! She was so pretty and natural! 🤦🏽♀️ I am pro plastic/cosmetic surgery but women really need to stop doing those lip fillers. Lol
I wouldn't say their first album literally went nowhere.
@@MrCoalmin it did it was a commercial disappointment when it came out
Saw them with Bush in Detroit and it didn’t go well, the crowd just wasn’t interested and Gwen was pissed off talking shit about the crowd and city¥
gwen stefanie is doing great. she's with blake shelton dude you got blindfold on you didn't mention him really.
It was her Catholic background that made her passive?
It was her catholic background she blamed for her bad traits in an interview she gave
This is more of a money grab the whole Coachella thing I watched some videos put on RUclips and the drummer kept looking down tony kanal would look down and off to the side of over to the drummer you got the vibe playing this for the money not where back
When I was a kid I wanted so badly to look like Gwen 😆
When I was teenager I hated Gavin because I wanted to be with Gwen lol
Worst decision of her life was getting face surgery.
Yeah it looks really weird now
It’s the lip fillers. Her face looks ok otherwise. The overfilled lips with the tight facelift isn’t a good look.
As a 42 year old woman, I agree! It’s hard guys, there is lots of pressure not to age! Thankfully, my man is delighted with a natural face ❤
Yes and I don't think she will stop, Seems she has an addiction. She said she walks around starving herself too. Anything to look good with her.
