- I ran a Facebook ad for a month in isolation of other marketing techniques to see if I really made any money on it. I also walk you through how I make Facebook ads for my novels. This is not for people who love fancy deep dives. This is for people, like me, who HATE FACEBOOK ADS...but want to try them anyway.

Probably most of my TBR is from Facebook ads. I’ve seen an ad for The Broken Queen about 3 times since it’s been out. Each time I’m like “oh look it’s Lydia! “
I love your moral support for us aspiring authors.
I've been writing (copywriting, B2B, and ghost writing) for years, but have my first novel coming out in November. I found you a couple of months ago and have really enjoyed hearing your insight. You are a realistic, relatable person. Myself, and my smother writer/author friends are enjoying your content!
"Overwhelmed dumbass" is my exact marketing strategy! Finally, a video for me! Thanks so much for this
Oh, this was insightful. I haven't gotten to this point quite yet, but when I do, I will have an idea on where to start. Thank you!
Interesting to see how the backend on Facebook ads works- thanks for the insight!
I luv your videos. It’s like watching an author sister talking self-publishing❤️
You've become my favorite youtuber❤
I haven't done FB ads but I'll definitely reference this video if/when I do. Every time I look at the FB interface, it makes me instantly exhausted. Am I the only one?
Will you do a video about Amazon ads?
Uh no I am also instantly exhausted when I look at it. That's why every ad I do is this exact same structure. At least I only had to learn it once. Amazon ads is next!
Something to look into. Thanks for the video.
thank you, that was very useful.
yes to more videos about advertising techniques!
Thanks for the demo. It is interesting to see how the sausage is made! Cheers
This was a great simple but informative tutorial on FB advertising! I tried it once for a short story collection but it didn’t seem to affect anything. Maybe I’ll try it for my next book. Thank you!
I think short stories, being a harder sell, would be nigh-impossible to profit from with Facebook ads, because I have really struggled even with books that are extremely on-trend...having a series is really the only way to truly get a profit out of them for 95% of people, I would guess (made-up statistic, but...)
@@lidiyafoxgloveauthor That makes sense. I do have a book 1 in a series I'm working on getting published sometime soon. Maybe I'll have better luck advertising that. 😅
I'm a reader interested in complex world-building. I just recently rewatched the adaptation of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets because I like it so much. Even though I don't really care for the main characters and the plot is a little generic, I love the scope of the world. I like how wild and crazy meets logical and detailed.
I want to give you my feedback on your ad because I would want it in your place, but take it for what it's worth. Your images do not say "deep, complex worldbuilding" to me. They say "floofy and conventional romance with a dash of fantasy." The details of your plot also don't speak to the complexity of your world. What unique aspect of your world drives the plot? If there isn't one, how important can the worldbuilding be? It's a story about a girl who's a servant in a castle though she's really a queen and a prince who's attracted to her against his will. That has been done a thousand times (exaggeration) in many books with no world-building to speak of.
Edit: I also want to say, thanks for this video. I think it's immensely helpful. I haven't really felt up to Facebook ads until now, and I need someone who's not an expert to introduce me to it.
Well, there are a few angles to this.
--You don't really say what image would appeal? It's easy to say "this image isn't the best" but FAR harder to find a good one using available resources if you are not a Photoshop whiz or a professional artist. In fact this is one of the major frustrations for doing any Facebook ad for any fantasy novel!
--I'm not really sure unique and complex are the same request. I see a lot of romantasy fans asking for stuff that IS tropey and has been done a thousand times, but just feels like a real place. Which is my main audience for the ad, mainly because this will always be the largest audience.
--Why not target more of a niche audience? Well, that's where it gets very difficult to make a Facebook ad profitable at all. Because people who want the same want the same same, but people who want unique all want a unique kind of unique. If that makes sense!
--One of the most unique aspects of my world is the race of doll people which I do touch on in the first sentence of the description. I can't think of very many fantasy romance books where the main character is an artificial magical creation. It's a pretty big aspect of the world in general, but it would also be awkward in the blurb to go into it any deeper than that.
@@lidiyafoxgloveauthor Thanks for the considered response! You've got some good points. As an indie author, I run into the same kinds of dilemmas. I didn't realize that the first line referred to doll people. Are you referring to "Raised to be a servant"? Because, as someone unfamiliar with your books, I did not catch that. You have the comment at 8:40 about it being misleading and maybe that's what you were referring to, but why not "designed to be a servant" or "manufactured to be a servant"? Again, I'm spit-balling here, and probably my suggestions reveal my lack of familiarity with the book. Also, you have a very good point about most people wanting something conventional. I'll admit, I may not be the audience you're really going for. I do think the image will appeal to a lot of people... I just don't think it says "worldbuilding."
@@anival9576 Oh okay, you're referring to the first ad. I thought you were talking about the last ad and then you might have looked at the actual description on Amazon. In the first ad, I'm not trying to convey world building at all. That one is just straight up trying to grab the romantasy audience so there's no need to get into world-building details with that ad.
"This video is for people who feel like an overwhelmed dumbass" cool, cool, I'm in the right place 😂
