Thanks David. Quick question: I always put the CTA in the "headline" section, right next to the button. Do you think it works better in the "primary text?" Do you have data showing higher read-through in that text section?
The primary text is much more prominent so I prefer a CTA there. Any time I've tried leaving the CTA out of there the ads don't seem to do nearly as well. You can double down and use a CTA in both places, of course. But it's a trade off against using another piece of social proof or a nice genre-squaring, reader-hooking review quote.
@@DavidGaughran Really good to know. I've been sticking a CTA next to the BUY NOW button assuming that people would be more prone to skipping the primary text because it's not as integrated in the creative part of the ad (especially when it requires someone to click the "read more" portion). But your experience says otherwise, which is super interesting. Thanks for this and all you do, man!
@@louiovino9051 I'd be super curious to hear if anyone has ever done any kind of eye-tracking analysis on Facebook ad elements. My gut says people will get drawn in by the image and then read the primary text next, and either click through right away, or perhaps read the headline text next if they are still waivering, and then finally the CTA button. So I kind of design the ad with that flow in mind - hook, CTA, hook, CTA. But I'd love to actually know!
@@DavidGaughran I work in the biz and am gonna ask our social team this exact question -- I'm positive we've got eye tracking data somewhere -- either in house or third party. I'll be sure to let you know what I find out!
Love the mention, right at the start, that you're beginning to hate the gatekeeping behind $1,000 courses. I'm getting so tired of that too! Thanks so much for this video!
Spent months watching countless video tutorials on FB ads for my upcoming book. This is the first one that finally made the process clear to me. Excellent. Thank you.
I don't know any great Celtic blessings, so just God bless you! I've been ready for days, all ducks in a row, to pull the switch on my first FB ads, terrified to go in and do it, scared over these new targeting rules. I'm in the Mark Dawson thing, and we're trying to help each other on our FB site, but all of us are feeling a bit lost. You're my favorite teacher of all time, I love all your RUclipss, not to mention your historical novels. Thank you, so much.
Thank you so much. This was brilliant. Before staying up until 3.00am making notes from your video, I was thinking of spending $150 on an online course!
I'll have an updated video soon! Also make sure you are on my mailing list, we have been doing lots of in depth newsletters on Facebook recently, focusing on all the tricky Advantage stuff.
You said this while I was typing but I'm going to say it anyway :-) The cover in the graphic thing was analysed by someone. They found that while the book cover reduced clicks, the sell-through was higher. If someone clicked they were more likely to buy - book buyers clicked more, non-book buyers clicked less. This was good.
Great tutorial, very engaging and thorough! Of course, as I watch this in July 2024, Facebook has changed the ad creation process from the screens as shown, but your explanations make it easy to navigate their new system. Thank you!
Very easy to follow, but yet comprehensive. Finally, a video that doesn't claim to know the "only way to do it"! It's a detailed thought-provoking tutorial. Thanks!
Just to say that last week (because my AMZ ads had crashed, my fault), I implemented this. And it was worked exactly as stated. To be fair, I already knew I had a very saleable product (completed dragon series) and good graphics, but just creating one ad this has been going insanely well on a £7.50/day budget. In one week, before the readthrough has really begun to build up, I have an ROI of about 200%. As a techie who's done work on machine learning, I understand what's going on at a deeper level, which is gratifying but not required for success.
Absolutely *brilliant*. As an old (literally) software trainer, I find your teaching approach top notch (as always). Clear, concise, with bits of humor to keep me entertained while I learn. I've dabbled in FB ads once or twice (without much luck) and am willing and ready to take the dive again thanks to your guidance. It's also very appreciated that you do this as a service for other authors rather than teasing us with a bit of info until we fork over some money for the "real goods."
David Gaughran is the absolute best for indie marketing advice by miles! This is a superb video far better than any other resource on Facebook book marketing. Thank you David!
Hi Dave, it's really great of you to share this with us impoverished authors, who can't keep forking out for expensive courses that are never as valuable as what you show us. Thanks again.
You're a life saver! I'm a newly self-published author, and have been losing my mind on how to market the dang book. I really appreciate all the information. I've taken it all in and just submitted my first ad. Excited to see the outcome. Also, thank you so much for all the info in the description tab. You are so refreshing, some folks are so weird about giving others any kind of pointers, so again thanks so much! You have everything listed, and so easy to find. Believe me when I say, you have helped me not feel so stressed! I'll be sure to check all of your stuff out. 😁
Enjoy the wonderful advice. I have just released a Vietnam memoir, my first publishing adventure at age 75, and it has been well received in the first few weeks. Now the challenge is to keep the momentum going forward. My problem in setting up the ad campaign, (I am quite the newbie) is it appears to offer me only a few broad categories, ie. US Veterans, US Navy, History, etc. so listening to you, I am assuming if I am patient, (an item I pray for every night "Dear Lord, I need patience and I need it NOW") that the AI from Facebook will sort it out in time. Am I correct in that assumption? Thank you again, my unmet friend.
Thanks for this, David - it was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I'm also a digital marketing veteran, but Facebook's labyrinthine ads interface (which makes Adwords look simple) and similarly labyrinthine tutorials elsewhere simply defeated me. I've done well with Bookbub low-bid ads for drip feeding into book 1 in a series, but your video inspired me to give FB another go. First results are encouraging. 12 hours after launch and 11 clicks @ .36 - much better than expected (and far better than I'd experience before) and I should be able to get that CPC down to around the .25 I pay for BB clicks. Anyway, I want to say how much I appreciate this tutorial and your generosity in sharing your expertise - especially dispelling historical myths. Thank you again.
I am a new indie author and so grateful for your videos. I have subscribed and to this channel as well as subscribed to your newsletter. Would really love to see you do a video re: your thoughts about the recent explosion mainstream availability of AI technology and implications related to self-publishing.
Thanks for this David. I was not able to find the selection area for "Custom Audience" the area where you typed in a famous author's name. For comparable authors. I do not see the edit button you demoed in your video.
thank you for doing this. you are correct, i purchase a program where this information is behind the pay wall and what you discussed is the same as what they teach as well. but "students" of the program had to pay insane amount of $ to get the same information you provided for free. so thank you.

Hoi David. I made an Ad on Facebook following your instruction and it looks promising. To say thanks I made a link on our group selfpubbers so you can expect some new followers. Thanks man, keep up the good work!
David, I am so pleased to have found you. I have been struggling with understanding FB ads, and you gave me my 'lightbulb moment'. Thank you. Question: We can try different ad sets with different target audiences, but how do we know which ad sets work best when Amazon doesn't give demographic or target information from their site? I just can't get past this hurdle. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the info, as always! Good to know that I'm right in not doing automatic placements. I only do FB news feed and the IG feed. I do IG because I make book trailers that look good in the IG feed and I do get some good engagement from them. So even if they're not converting, it's good brand awareness for me.

To truly see which was working, I turned my Amazon off completely once I saw I was getting a good number of clicks on my FB ad. If you see this in the next few days, do you have a suggestion how long to let an A/B test run when it looks like one of them is outperforming the other? FB says no winner yet, but it sure looks to me like one is clearly outperforming the other. Then do I turn it off or tweak something in it and keep it running? Thanks for sharing your vast knowledge with all of us. I really appreciate it.
loved this spent hours on it, followed you step by step, and thank you soooooo much.
