I’ve met people like Derrick in the music and to be fair you take their curtness with a pinch of salt or sugar if you will. But they speak a truth, which we’re not ready for; there’s an enlightened one amongst us all, I wasn’t ready for them, but after years away from it. It makes sense. Bless up all in this music thing. Stay positive
The best definition of a musician that I stand by is by Genesis P.Orridge of the Industrial band Throbbing Gristle "anything that makes a sound is an instrument, and anyone that can make it make a sound is a musician"
My Mentor. Such a icon. Best DJ ive ever seen in the Techno/ House scene. Out of all the three Derrick is much more elaborate about the music itself. Kevin and Juan were much more into the producing side of things.
@ 49:00 I would have to fully agree with Derrick here. Him stating that going full digital and fully dependent on computers to make our music can definitely kill the soul or human element in the music. I've been noticing this massively in the current stages of Techno / House track coming out. You can clearly tell who and how the artist made the track simply by the emotions evoked in it. You feel no passion from the music. Just a hollow machine with no sentiment. So it doesn't connect with the audience.
Agreed that's why I only listen to old school artists such as Derrick Juan and Kevin Jeff Mills etc... That type of music make you FEEL instead of artificial digital nonsense that people love so much especially younger people in particular.
Why is this interviewer so disrespectful? I almost can't watch this because it feels so uncomfortable. Good thing that Derrick May is dropping his knowledge anyway.
For those who don't know, Derrick May was friends with Thomas Barnett, Blake Baxter and Eddie Fowlkes and had them come over to his place to use his equipment and record tracks. Derrick then stole their tracks, including Nude Photo and released them under Rhythm Is Rhythm. The piano section from Strings of Life was performed by Mike James and although he was credited, Derrick May has never paid Mike any royalties. I've seen conversations between Derrick and Mike where Derrick promised to pay Mike and nothing materialised. Chez Damier introduced Mike to Derrick in to 80s and in a later conversation, Derrick promised on their friendship to pay Mike his portian of the royalties. Again, nothing materialised. There's also women coming forward internationally to speak about their negative experiences with Derrick. We're talking about some serious allegations. Derrick's career rode off those tracks, which weren't his. Mike's exposing Derrick and a book is due to go on sale with a full expose. Coincidentally, Mike has started to receive threatening calls and messages.
He also comes across as very arrogant too. Comparing House producers to Jazz musicians? It always amazes me how these people become so worshipped, just for pressing a few buttons?
Derrick May is the best kinda asshole ever.. he cares & he don't care.. he takes it seriously & doesn't stop laughing.. i would very much like to get drunk with that guy & argue about mixers & drum machines lol 30 years later, the man still makes me laugh & smile. and his trax still groove

Derrick May finally comes clean in this interview, I'm glad he spoke out about Chicago and the legendary Ron Hardy being so influential to his scene but Techno should not be credited to Detroit or a thing at all aside from the German scene. his breakout 1987 "strings of life" single is a straight up house track even if as he says "didn't want to make songs that sounded like their stuff but just stuff that they would play in Chicago" well that's not what happened, it sounds exactly like Chicago's stuff that predates it and should not be labeled techno because there's nothing in it that distinguishes it from House. And there's countless examples of that in the so called techno sub genre, Inner city's "good life", Juan atkins's "no ufos" another literal house track but it gets labeled as techno...wtf is techno about it? the fact it was made in detroit? come on man it's time this gets corrected, "THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE"! detroit techno is just straight up chicago house music, specifically acid.
Then why are you watching a two hour interview w/ him? I get why people don’t click with his persona, but you rlly think he has no soul, passion, or groove in his tracks/sets? That’s wild.
Absolutely terrible interview? Why is he comparing Jazz musicians to House Music producers? I loved the Chicago House days, but they're not in the same category by a long stretch.
Idk how you could possibly compare Theo and Derrick. Theo ain’t anywhere near as arrogant as Derrick May. Also hasn’t been accused on mass of sexual assault like Derrick either!
If you want to read more about Derrick May then you're in luck...

With multiple credible allegations of rape and theft, I'm surprised you haven't followed suit with Boiler Room and deleted this video.

found you!
How has this video not got tens of thousands of views?!? Best interview I've seen with Derrick May.
Detroit doesn’t get enough credit

Tbh Derrick May is my favorite DJ out of Belleville Three imo Derrick is the most unique and creative of all three.
he's a serial rapist and abuser who stole all the music he's famous for.

that cat is consistently one of the worst interviewers ever... every single time I see him it's "WTF is guy even doing in this room"
Absolutely true. This is the first interview i saw where someone tells him to shut up. Finally.
@P X-101 I don't complain about everything. Maybe you like this guy's "sarcastic" interview style but i don't.
Because he's poking through the bullshit

You don't get royalties just because you play on a record... learn something about the music business before making allegations
@@basehead617 I work in the industry and know how it work. Take your pointless comments elsewhere. These aren't allegations, they're fact.
@@basehead617 Enabling a thief and abuser. You must be proud.

"House Music does not come from London... It comes from Chicago!" 1:02:42
Via Manchester.
I found a transmat gem only 3 weeks ago i heard Mr May play it at The End never knew what it was found it for £3
OMG - can not believe how rude that interviewer was! how did he get that job? Fair play to Derrick for not calling him out.
Make it better please!
His ears are so trained, he can hear a fart from anywhere in the room .. its called ear training .. he seems to be well versed with it
Is this a young and sleepy Gerd Janson at 1:10:38 ?
Derrick May is the best kinda asshole ever.. he cares & he don't care.. he takes it seriously & doesn't stop laughing..

Painful to watch due to the interviewer - much respect to Derrick obv

I thought DM was a cock in this too.
Derrik wasn’t lying about Belleville lol

@redbullmusicacademy Do you guys have any new material? Any new content from the present time.? Curious to know. Please reply. Thanks in advance.
Dhruva Kashyap Red Bull music Academy was shut down in 2019
No decent music has been made since the late 80's, so good luck with that one?
Derrick May comes off quite arrogant
It’s confidence
How long are you performing
48 hours
That man is gonna be on some drugs
I have respect for this guy but the comment about not dancing while producing his own music is total BS.
what did he say,where??
This interviewer was pretty bad also with Tony Humphries.
This interview is slightly CRINGY 🥴
There's probably only 1 thing in the world that is more insufferable than Derrick May himself, his music.
Huh...?
Then why are you watching a two hour interview w/ him?

I get where he’s coming from in terms of history. Appreciation. And catalog.
This dudes like Derrick May and Theo Parrish always pretend to be professors to a stupid crowd. Like they invented music..
Whereas Parrish is yet the more down to earth, sensible one.
It’s being passionate about your craft. Maintaining a culture of music that’s been watered down.
Idk how you could possibly compare Theo and Derrick. Theo ain’t anywhere near as arrogant as Derrick May. Also hasn’t been accused on mass of sexual assault like Derrick either!
I disagree with nearly everything he says. Dont be afraid to be proud of your work
least likable daddy of Detroit Techno
