DAVID GILMOUR & THE PRETTY THINGS AT ABBEY ROAD

  • "Old Man Going"
For many people, this was the highlight of the show - and I don't think we would disagree with them. Yesterday we posted our record-breaking video from our first year as a Page. But records are made to be broken - and this is just the kind of video that could do it !
David Gilmour is a superb technician of the Electric Guitar - there's probably none better. Players with great technical ability are rarely able to play with real heart and soul - but once again, this is where David stands out - in fact, he stands head and shoulders above the rest.
He 'rocked up' at our rehearsal room two days before the gig at Abbey Road. He didn't turn up with a million electronic gizmos, or any roadies flapping around - no, it was just David, his little 'Boogie amp' and his 'Fender Strat' guitar - he just plugged in, and we got on with it. I was impressed with his natural, unassuming manor and, by the way - by his brilliance as a musician too. He could excel in any set of circumstances.
It was during that afternoon rehearsal that he reminded us (Jon and myself) where we all first met. It was in a Recording Studio in 1965 - we were all there as session musicians. At that time, Jon and I were still members of 'The Fenmen', a vocal harmony band. We had been booked by Andrew Loog Oldham (The Rolling Stones Magager) as backing singers - and the fresh-faced guitarist on the session was none other than David Gilmour himself.
There was masses for David to remember from that single afternoon's rehearsal - he didn't take any notes, or make any recordings. The next time we played the stuff was on stage at Abbey Road for the live show.... he was note perfect, and didn't miss a cue, whilst sprinkling a little bit of magic stardust over the proceedings ! Very impressive.
The whole performance worked out far better than I dared imagine, but on this song in particular, things were really 'cookin'. Helped in no small measure by the drum department (there was two of them), and that was very much a 'family affair'. First of all there was our regular drummer 'Skip' (Alan Skipper), and he was superbly aided and abetted by his very talented son - Dov Skipper. Between them, they drove things forward with power and purpose. It was a case of 'Fasten Your Seat Belts, and Extinguish All Cigarettes' ! WW

Is that Wally's 'slab' Precision bass, and does he still have the white Mustang bass he used in the '60s?
