      “Chinese” is technically Mandarin - Cantonese is Cantonese, a dialect.

    • @ReportsOnChina
      @ReportsOnChina 5 лет назад +1

      WiseVoltage It’s a different language family from Mandarin, but in official terms it’s classed as a dialect within China. (It depends if you approach the question as a linguist or from a political / cultural standpoint.)

    • @ReportsOnChina
      @ReportsOnChina 5 лет назад +3

      WiseVoltage I haven’t deleted any comments? Sorry, I’m not using the right terms - you can probably tell I’m not commenting from the perspective of a linguist. As you can probably guess, what I mean is that Cantonese is one of the five (?) language families (groups) within the broader definition of Chinese languages. Officially (politically) everything other than Mandarin is considered a dialect, even those that may technically be different languages and not mutually intelligible. Anyway, we agree on the wider point: It’s silly for anyone to say “I speak Chinese,” although it can be SLIGHTLY passable if they mean Standard Chinese which sometimes means Standard Mandarin or 普通话。

    • @ReportsOnChina
      @ReportsOnChina 5 лет назад +1

      Vincent Gogh Yeah exactly! Those spoken by “ethnic minorities” are “technically” protected and allowed to be promoted in some settings, but regional dialects like Shanghainese have no such protections.

    I got inspired to learn Cantonese after meeting a student from my university who speaks it fluently. He gave me a couple of demonstrations of the grammar structures and pronunciations, and I've been intrigued in Cantonese ever since. My second language is Korean and I've been studying it for 2 years now, and now I want to be able to learn and understand Cantonese as well. It's such a cool language 😁

      If you want to learn Cantonese well, I'd encourage you to learn a Cantonese phonetics system. You can do that by turning on Cantonese phonetics feature from a translation app like Pleco. Yale Cantonese phonetics system is usually the easiest to acquire for native English speakers, but there are other types of Cantonese phonetics systems, if you prefer them. Cantonese Pinyin is the system officially used in Hong Kong, but it never made sense to me during my self study of Cantonese, so I adopted Yale instead.

    Today unexpectedly a kid from Hong Kong joined my year group (i go to secondary school in the UK) unfortunately there’s been racist comments on him and it frustrates me so much because other students who has joined my school didn’t receive the same attitude, i’m sure it’s because he’s Asian. I don’t like how everybody crowded around him today so I decided to borrow Chinese dictionary’s until i figured people from Hong Kong speak Cantonese, so here i am! I want to welcome him as much as possible because it hurt me to see him look clueless and alone as it remembered me of my father’s story. I’m not entirely sure how this is going to work but i can at least tell him I have well intentions.

    Why Cantonese isn't as popular as Mandarin

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  7 лет назад +358

      That's a controversial topic... it's true that there are more Mandarin speakers around the world, because China has such a big population. But personally, I believe Cantonese used to be the main dialect in ancient literature, poems, etc. Now the debates of which dialect is more common become too political.

      In many overseas communities Cantonese is more widely spoken still, though Mandarin is overtaking it in many places too, though Cantonese still remains strong. It basically comes down to the government of China pushing Mandarin education, even in the Cantonese speaking areas in mainland China, Mandarin is now taught exclusively in schools & Cantonese is under some threat there. Though there are also positives. There is no sign of it dieing out in Hong Kong. Nor is it under threat in my native city of Vancouver Canada where it is still the second most spoken language after English & the total number of speakers grows by 10,000 per year.

      The ancient languages were entirely different from any one existing in modern China. Nonetheless, Cantonese _preserves some more of_ that ancient language (Middle Chinese, to be exact, but there probably were many local variants just like with modern Chinese with Mandarin, Cantonese, Sichuanese and others) in terms of phonological structure than Mandarin. Mandarin is very phonologically poor and extremely regular. There is only about 1600 syllables (including tonal contours) in Mandarin. I think Cantonese has like 4000 or more, if I remember right. That makes Cantonese considerably phonologically richer and thus less reliant on context or polysyllabism to distinguish certain words. Characters that are different but read the same sound in Mandarin may yield the more logically expectable diversity of pronunciations when sounded in Cantonese.
