That's a controversial topic... it's true that there are more Mandarin speakers around the world, because China has such a big population. But personally, I believe Cantonese used to be the main dialect in ancient literature, poems, etc. Now the debates of which dialect is more common become too political.
In many overseas communities Cantonese is more widely spoken still, though Mandarin is overtaking it in many places too, though Cantonese still remains strong. It basically comes down to the government of China pushing Mandarin education, even in the Cantonese speaking areas in mainland China, Mandarin is now taught exclusively in schools & Cantonese is under some threat there. Though there are also positives. There is no sign of it dieing out in Hong Kong. Nor is it under threat in my native city of Vancouver Canada where it is still the second most spoken language after English & the total number of speakers grows by 10,000 per year.
BudgieEntertainment that's funny I always had the opposite view. Cantonese sounds so much better imo. I always watch Chinese movies in Cantonese over Mandarin
The ancient languages were entirely different from any one existing in modern China. Nonetheless, Cantonese _preserves some more of_ that ancient language (Middle Chinese, to be exact, but there probably were many local variants just like with modern Chinese with Mandarin, Cantonese, Sichuanese and others) in terms of phonological structure than Mandarin. Mandarin is very phonologically poor and extremely regular. There is only about 1600 syllables (including tonal contours) in Mandarin. I think Cantonese has like 4000 or more, if I remember right. That makes Cantonese considerably phonologically richer and thus less reliant on context or polysyllabism to distinguish certain words. Characters that are different but read the same sound in Mandarin may yield the more logically expectable diversity of pronunciations when sounded in Cantonese.
ninjaspace1230 but you know that in the past it was also mainly spoken in the province guangdong which is the origin of that dialect and not just in hong kong, in general it gradually decreased over time because its not included in their education

Why Cantonese isn't as popular as Mandarin
Thanks to you I learn a little bit of Cantonese now, love from the Philippines 🇵🇭

I was born in Macau and was adopted to an American family at the age of 7. I have since forgotten how to speak cantonese entirely. At age 50, I'm eager to begin learning.

Hahaha yes! Now everyone can remember it easily :D

How I remember numbers: First two sound like they start with a y. Next two are names. The middle is easy. 6 reminds of Luke. Next two are animals and the rest sounds fun. Thanks!

Awesome!! Good teacher Ms. Olivia..many thanks..
Personally, I’ll start with learning the tones of Cantonese then start speaking. However, if you can read Traditional Chinese, it should be easier.
hehe it's called traditional chinese not traditional mandarin :) I don't think traditional mandarin is a thing, never heard of it, but simplified chinese is a thing which is used along with mandarin.

I found this, start to learn cantonese as i am going to Hongkong soon, but well hard for me to learn as i have to twist my tounge a lot,i speak english, mandarin and indonesia malay
Actually, a lot of Cantonese expressions are influenced by the English language because HK was once a British colony. Most Hongkongers actually use some english words to communicate in their daily lives, e.g. "Hi", "Hello", "Bye bye"
although this is true, i dont think its unique to cantonese. 嗨, 拜拜, ハロー, バイバイ are all used in languages which werent british colonies
@@oilylondon that's right. hi, hello, and bye are universal.
Yeah, we also sometimes mix in english words in sentences.

When I was little my mother taught me to speak taishanese (an uncommon Chinese dialect) and she never taught me mandarin or Cantonese, even though she knew how to speak both. I grew up listening to her talk and I understood what she said in Cantonese, but I was never able to actually speak it. I know it sounds stupid, but I understand and never speak it, but this will help a lot! Thank you!!!!
Same thing I’m taishanese as well, my mom also speaks both Cantonese and Mandarin, I know how you feel because I was never taught as well but Cantonese I understand but sometime scare you speak it, I understand it because of taishanese. Mandarin i don’t it’s hard I just get jealous because everyone just speak it, but I only speak taishanese.
