  • While I was building the last structural wall of the charred wood basement in my off-grid log cabin at the new homestead, Cali suddenly collapsed from heat exhaustion. It took 30 minutes of cooling her down in the stream and keeping her still in the shade to get her to recover to the point that I could take her by ATV back to my truck where air conditioning helped bring her back to normal.

    My dogs are closer to me than most humans, and that’s by design, and it’s easy to see you and Cali have that too. The bond is very deep. I can imagine how you felt sitting with her watching her struggling to survive. I sympathize with you my friend. I’m glad you got her to safety and everything is ok. Cali is a big part of this channel too. Take care.

    I am a grown man, standing over six feet tall, and I've seen some things in my life. But when I see a Golden in distress, I cry like a little baby. I love those dogs. You know that when you get a dog, you'll probably outlive them, but still... I feel so helpless when they look at you with their big brown eyes, fully relying on you for help or relief... Man... Where are my tissues?

    Omg...heat exhaustion in dogs is very real and extremely dangerous. I worked as a vet tech in South Florida and saw too many die. People don't realize that they will overheat and too many times they don't survive. I'm glad she's ok.

      Some dogs will gladly run beside your vehicle in the extreme heat until they're completely overheated and dehydrated to the point of organs shutting down (sometime fatally). They're a bit like kids in that you have to take precautions for them because they don't do it well enough by themselves.

    Shawn … I had a golden retriever that went through this every summer … the vet suggested that I have her coat “stripped” at the beginning of summer (taking off a lot of the bulk of her fur) … she was way more comfortable and never had another seizure after that. I also had a small plastic pool that was filled with water that she could go in to when it got too hot for her comfort level. She used it all the time. By the end of the summer, her coat had grown out enough that it kept her warm in the upcoming winter. I was so thankful for the suggestion. Maybe that will work for Cali, also …

    • @33Jenesis
      @33Jenesis 3 года назад +31

      My first thought was “Cali seems to still have her winter coat”. In SoCal it is common for thick coated dogs to have summer trim in order to cope with fur trapped heat.

      I groom my Golden several times during the warm weather months and he thanks me for it. He is much more comfortable and suffers less from the heat. Coat grows back quickly. Groomed my first Golden after his hot spots were getting out of control. Wished I had learned sooner that grooming would help alleviate the skin problems the Goldens often have.

      No thankyou. Shear laziness to want only an animal as a companion. Dogs don't have the ability to love.... they obey. Treat them good , they respond in kind. They make very few demands on a human so one isn't required to grow. I'd much rather have my only back from the dead than any of the pets I've ever had. One replaces a cat or dog when it dies, not so your child. So those advocating for animals to replace their offspring are far less of a human than those who know the balance between human and animal. Note I speak from the experience of having loved and lost both child and pets.

    My dog collapsed once and acted dead or dying. Called the vet and he said to immediately give her some corn syrup on my finger into her mouth. I did several finger fulls into her mouth. Suddenly she started to lick my finger. Then she 'woke up'. The vet told me when any trauma hits a dog, their blood sugar drops dangerously low. He said she would have died had I not done the corn syrup as fast as I did. It was incredibly hard to keep control of myself so I could help my dog. Now I will always give corn syrup or whatever sweet liquid I have to my animal if they collapse. I am so thankful to have learned that and saved my beloved Daphne! That was very scarey...🐕

    A couple things come to mind with Cali: she ate a poison mushroom; she licked a poison toad; she got bit by a Missisauga rattlesnake but didn't get a lethal dose; she has some symptoms of heartworm disease. She ate some rotten meat on a carcass in the woods. Hallucinations and throwing up are clues as are lack of muscle control. Heat stroke seems unlikely. You might discuss it with your vet. It could just be a one off event. Glad she seems ok.

    I've commented before Re: Cali's coat and as a professional dog groomer (and lecturer of 15 years) just wanted to add to the voices saying 'Please don't clip her coat'. She may have a lot of undercoat still, which (as she spends a lot of time out in the elements with you) would have grown thicker over the winter months to keep her warm. A dogs coat acts like a heating system and clipping the protective layers of the dogs outer coat prevent it from doing it's job. It's like an AC unit, without the fan. The shiny 'guard hairs' or 'top layer' of the coat help reflect a lot of the suns rays and when the downy fur of the undercoat is shed that same top layer coat traps cool air against the skin to help the dog regulate it's body temperature. This works exactly the same way as it does for animals like bears. Not only does removing this top, protective layer of fur via clipping prevent it from growing back (and so doing it's job) but Cali spends much of her time with you outside and her coat will have grown accustomed to changing with the seasons. She will need it to protect her against the outdoors and weather, more than a dog that spends 90% of it's life indoors. The weather can be variable these days though, so you may find that she needs a bit of help shedding some of that undercoat more quickly and this can be done with a rake like brush. My first thought in watching this though was snake bite or perhaps even ticks or heart worm... I'm sure you're doing everything you can to get her checked over though and keeping fingers crossed for a full recovery
