Your sand/corn flakes description of distortion is perfect. That's exactly why I love orange amps. They've got a thicker crunch than any other amp I've tried.
I am so pissed with myself. Im not intirely sure where I got this idea that I hated the sound of Orange amps. I believe I seen some horrible review years and years ago. Ive been trying to get this tone all my life. Its absolutely perfect in every way. Im more into the blues tone it make but you have shown it even does hard shit to. Ive been playing for almost 17 years and it took scrolling down ampitide presets to wake up. Sl then I searched it and it is the tone. I have now seen 20 vids. Im going to sell my soul. I WILL OWN THIS AMP.
Just as a note, Matamp made the original 1960's Orange amps that this is in tribute to, check out Matamp, they're still going and are still hand making custom amps with those lovely vintage british voices. I could be a bit biased because I just bought one myself, but honestly they are mind-blowingly nice, and not much more expensive than top of the line oranges.
@@andrewflint9551 Thank you for pointing out the Matamp brand. I have searched (lightly) the 'Green' amps and it turns out I was not using the right term in my search.
I'm going to start describing my gain in terms of cereal from now on. "How's the gain on that amp?" "Oh, Raisin Bran with a touch of Cheerios." Well done, sir.
Hey Ryan. First, not a fan of your type of music and I didn't have much hope for a decent review BUT I am now a fan of you and your delivery [talk about turn around] and well spoken reviews. mothafockin YES!!! played the or15 a week ago, it's a metal monster! OR50 is going to be even closer due to the same poweramp tubes, but the or15 definitely gets you in the same ballpark!
Holy shit, once you start playing at 0:30 into this, you convinced me to get one. I was hovering between the OR100 and an Axe-Fx 2 for quite some time now...and seeing how the Axe-Fx2 is always out of stock (and the XL costing $300 more, despite being available) I've pretty much made up my mind. Nothing beats this thick, brutal valve tone. It's so versatile too. Fuck this thing is great.
i think everyone can appreciate a no-nonsense opinion from some one with plenty of experience. please, more of those segments in the future! i loved how this amp sounded compared to the more modern metal tones you usually dial in with the dual rec and similar stuff, and those pickups are also fantastic. great video. thanks.
Really like that someone finally did a good and reliable speaken opinion after great quality ,,in the mix" and playthrough. Your visd just keep getting sexier and sexier ;DDD
Gotta come back and give thanks. this is one of the videos that pushed me over the edge into buying my dream amp and I still have no regrets. Although I got to tell you, I think it's really funny, I use a BlackStar as my backup.
Yep I had a pleasant chat with Mike Kenney and he told me that he was using the Jim Root signature Dark Terror live because it was lighter. Well it seems he has like 3 or 4 distortion pedals too and he uses a 5150 in studio but still ...
You didn't mention which tone you want. Regarding the OR15, it has the same preamp as the Jim Root Terror with a more "vintage" voicing. I put that in quotation marks because, whereas the voice is midrange growl (you can scoop the mids, but they're not pre-scooped), it has no less gain than a more "modern" amp (four stages). A pair of WGS Green Berets in an oversized 2x12 closed back cab suits the voicing, while the sound goes from big to HUGE as the gain increases (no lack of low end punch).
I'm glad you mentioned Hum and Failure, because when you were playing through the cleans it reminded me of Stars. Good taste, and it sounds absolutely killer.
You could make it work, but Orange amps are always just a little fizzy. With a noisegate and a TS9 with the drive rolled all the way off, the volume cranked, and the tone at noon it does a decent job of taming that fizziness.
+Killian Shows As much as I'm not a fan of it, people seem to love the Peavey Valveking for just about every genre. Such as some blues players love it, and if you go anywhere on metal forums you'll find people talking about how cheap it is and how it's good for metal. However, if you have a lot of money to spend, you can't really go wrong with a Marshall JVM for versatility, as it has so many channels and settings that to say it's just versatile may be an understatement. However this may only be my opinion, as I am currently fangirling over the JVM. If you want a more simple setup, and versatile to you is a great clean channel, a great dirty channel, and if you crank the clean channel you'll get a wonderful crunchy breakup, the orange th100, or 30 if you don't want all that wattage, are great examples of amps that can pretty much do it all. There are many more examples of great versatile amps, so the best thing to do is look around and find one that you like.
Somehow the amp completely slipped me by. I didn't know they had made it. I'd had a TH30, then an OR15 and an mk3 Rockerverb 100. Loved them both, but I felt like there was a little something missing. Then I got my Rocker 30, and it's amazing. A little grittier or grainier...and simple. Thirty watts is plenty, but at the same volume on the stage, a 100w is just a little more controlled. That's the thing, yeah nobody NEEDS a hundred watter nowadays, but the hundred watt amp will be tighter at the same volume on the stage. Sometimes that's necessary... So then I heard this amp. It's perfect. One less gain stage than the Rockerverb for that extra grit. I just bought a used one that's on its way to me now. Your review is spot on. There's a lot of good amp companies out there, and I've owned a lot of them, but nothing sounds like an Orange, and none are built like them. Tanks. Heavy as hell, simple, they do a handful of tricks perfectly instead of a bunch of tricks that are all mediocre. If I can't get the sound out of the OR or the Rocker, then it's not one I need. Bottom line.
btw, i actually think this tone would be great for death metal. not for a modern coretone, and not for techdeath either, but great for some benediciton/bolt thrower/morbid angel tones. and maybe also for some brutal death metal where you need a lot of top end fizz and some bass end. from what i've heard here i think it would definitely get a tone similar to defeated sanity's chapters of repugnance album if the rest of the mix is right.
I think the addition of some commentary at the end of the video is a really good feature, so thank you for that! I understand you mostly get heads and probably use your own cabs, but if possible it'd be super-neat if you could talk a bit about what sort of cab you'd recommend for a certain amp.
Hi mate I sort of play Melodic Hardcore punk/ metal music mainly. The nearest I can think of to explain what i play is heavy bluesy metal riffs some times but i also play fast chord/power chord progressions with variations of tremolo picking mixed in there in a hardcore punk fashion if you know what i mean. My question is would an orange amp ( I'm looking at a rockerverb 50 mkii) suit this style of music, i hear the terms loose, dark and muddy thrown around alot. What do you think?
i like that tone a lot! wonder if the or15 sounds similar. the orange sounds soooo full and present without sounding clinically tight, but it's not muddy either. exactly what i'm looking for.
I'm in two bands right now one is thrash/old school death metal (kinda scream bloody gore-ish on the death metal stuff) but my main project is a stoner doom band so I'm wondering would this amp be able to cover both styles with maybe so pedals and some work or could it do it out of the box.
Sounds killer! I almost bought a Jim Root #4 the other day, used, for $449. But I talked myself out it pretty quickly after thinking about some upcoming expenses.
In your personal opinion , which amp is better? Orange or Line 6? I was wondering because I'm in need of a good amp for metal and hard rock and I was hoping for some insight on which is recommended.
Yes, it will be similar. I believe they are the same designs except for only one single channel so no separate clean channel and less output power. lower wattage will sound slightly sweeter and have less headroom but if you are after these tones for a lesser price you will be happy. a, less headroom (meaning it will distort faster as turn up the volume and gain knobs)
Hello, how could you compare it to a 5150 ? I play rock metal stuff like Alter Bridge, Staind, Godsmack... and i need a more musical overdive less compressed . Thanks
there's another guy on here who does a great shoot out of both but I can tell you right away from your needs, I'd go with the rockerverb. It's a bit more modern
I'm looking to start looking at buying a better amp for my setup. Currently I'm using a Fender FM212R and a Boss ME25 for all my play, and I don't really know a whole lot about amps as of yet. I enjoy playing a lot of heavier tones: Amon Amarth, Death, At the Gates and the like - but I also enjoy playing things from Keith Merrow and Loomis (obviously) as well as Symphony X or Kalmah. Is there any brand that would be most suited to my tastes than others? Sorry for Wall o' text but yeah.
Hi Bruce! Great demo! You said that you prefered this amp over the Rockerverb. Can you be a little more specific? I ordered an OR100 (still waiting on it...) instead of a Rockerverb. Just wanna be sure that I made the right choice... ;-)
One of my favorite heads for a reason! Sounds great! One question for you Ryan. Is your Misha Mansoor pedal a prototype, because mine has different knobs and placing plus the logos placement and text where it says "Misha mansoor overdrive" on yours, it says "Misha Bulb Mansoor overdrive" on mine.
I'm so glad I finally got to hear decent Lace pickups demos. Keep up the good work man!.... also any chance in hell of demonstrating some other laces sensors? like some of the dually models?
I think this is the only video of fluffz that makes the amp sound like it haz ballz. All other Fluffz demos make the amps sound hi-mid/treble friendly... i like it.. also .. Orange ;)
Im looking in to upgrading from a line 6 spider 2. this might be overkill for me what amp preferably tube amp around the 1k mark would be my best buy for metal music.
Well, the EVH 5150 iii 50 watt is exactly $1000 new, and it is one of the best amps I have ever heard for metal, plus it gets a pretty wide range of tones outside of metal. The mesa boogie mini rectifier is great too. It costs about $1000 new as well. (note that both of those are heads, so you would need a cabinet with them). You have so many options at this price range, and if you are willing to buy used, than that opens up the entire rectifier series. You actually have a ton of options at that price range, and I would recommend looking on Craigslist, guitarcenter.com, and Ebay.
Would this be a good set up for grunge/post-grunge rock like ..... Nirvana/Seether so far my band is a 3 pc with 2 guitars kinda funny , but we might have bassist in our hands as of now, that aside.... we cover nirvana and seether songs as well three days grace and a handfull of other bands we would like to try out. eventually we hopefully will start writing our own music.
I'm searching for that sound when my amp growls, you know- when it sound like it is a harley-davidson, tractor, scared bison or some huge man vommiting hard. You can find this kind of tone in latest Converge album or (sorry->) slipknot's "Devil in I" especially in the chorus (again sorry for even mentioning them). Now I run Orange Rockerverb mk1 with Mesa recto cab and with proper setting (in face very simmilar to yours in this video) I can get some of that, but I know that it's possible to make it even more like this. Is OR100 what I'm looking for? I also have Mesa Boogie Mark V and it doesn't give me that kind of tone no matter what is set on the eq's
Fluff Im looking into an Orange amp, how many watts would I need to run a half stack With some high efficient speakers to go up against acoustic drums and a 150 watt ampeg bass amp In a small room, we play metal and meal drums with double bass is loud with little mutes so everything is just super loud especial the drums. Im thinking about 50 to 75watts/speaker on a half stack, Im gonna probley get a tube amp and I know they sound louder to the ear but Instead of the natural distortion Im going to use my pedals so I need clean headroom, it would be ok if a touch of natural distortion was added to top it off to get a nice tone, but anyways, how many watts would you recommend I needed?
+Guitar Guitar If you're looking at an Orange amp to play metal, the only real two options you have are the Rockerverb and Jim Root Signature. You shouldn't need more than a 30 watt tube amp for rehearsals. Anything more than that is plain and simple stupid. Ever heard a Vox AC30 at full tilt? You'll fry your ears off. I doubt the bassist would be running his amp at full tilt either. And if you're using your pedals to get the distortion for a general metal tone, you're doing it wrong. Do some research, check out Peavey, Marshall, Mesa, and what they sound like being boosted with a tube screamer, that's a general metal tone, not an Orange OR100 with a bunch of distortion pedals. Man, the feedback alone would blow your balls out your anus.
Hello Fluff! New fan here and I'm binging through wonderful vid after vid and here in 2015 it's obviously late and arguably off topic ish ,but I feel hopefully compelled to ask if you think the TH 30 is a decent amp in a similar comparison of the lower wattage range. I just picked mine up a few months ago and I'm happy still with the stock tubes and all, I just couldn't afford the extra thousand for a TV100. Having watched a vid where you mention EL84s and lunchbox not having that low end resonance, Made me wonder if there are similar better amps in that price range? I love orange and will very likely starve this fall to pick up my TV100.
I have a Peavey Ultra Plus, it's 51 lbs (weighed it because I couldn't believe how damn heavy it is), and it's honestly the heaviest thing ever. Definitely indistinguishable from 70 lbs.
Can't do brutal stuff? On teh contrary...that was some of the best tone I've heard from you yet! Punchy, defined, crunchy and THICK as fuck. I love it.
Does anybody happen to know of a good pedal to beef up the dirty channel on this amp? I know with its limited headroom, pushing it further usually makes it "flub" out. Overdrives and boosts usually do the trick, but I can't find a fuzz to thicken up the dirty channel. Ive tried Ross Distortion, MJM London Fuzz, Fulltone Ultimate Octave, Wampler Velvet Fuzz, DAG Jetfuzz. Pharoah Fuzz Supreme and Thorpy Muffroom Cloud do not "hurt" the sound, but don't add anything special. Does anybody know of a pedal that makes the dirt channel sound bigger and fuller without making it significantly louder. I've heard fuzz pedals with a blend knob can help. Anybody suggestions?
+T- Hawk It would be such a waste to put a fuzz pedal in front of this amp. Use a TS9 or 808 style overdrive and celebrate the amp's tube distortion rather than getting a cheap clipped diodes gain as you would through a fuzz pedal.
+TheManWithNoName686 Thanks! I was actually just reading how Tube Screamer types accentuate the mid-hump that is already there in a bad way. The search goes on.
Mastodon is riding Oranges. That's pretty heavy shit. Heyzoosdefuckingcrisco, I recall when I was about 7, I saw a Orange head in a local pawn shop & wondering WTF it was. EL34's? THAT tight? I could've sworn it was EL84! Good demo, Fluff, thx.
Orange amps are worth every penny and most of them excellent amps. Marshall has a million different models with few good ones. Big difference. It seems Marshall just throws amps out there and see what works. Orange only release solid products.
what cab. would you suggest to run the OR100 through? 25watt or 30watt speakers. I looking at orange 4X12 straight and vintage ,angled marshall 25watt cabs
Similar. OR50 would get you closer due to the power section. For preamp tone, the OR100 and the OR50 have the very same drive channel that is the OR15, plus a clean channel. Myself, I have an OR15, and it just doesn't quite have the power I require. It doesn't really do PURE clean either, but the drive is GODLIKE. Easy to understand why they ripped this sound out of the OR15, and used it as the drive channel in the OR50/100. Yes. IF you have the right cab/load-box, you can get quite close.
It's not often to hear someone mention Failure and Hum. Two of the most underrated bands of the 90's. Great work as always fluff!
Dude ur the man I just got the OR100 mostly because I just couldn't get this video out of my head It's the best damn amp I have ever played I can't say enough about how massive the grind is and how responisive it is to guitars and your playing style it just reads your mind I never comment on anything I just had to say thanks for showing me the light brotha

You could make it work, but Orange amps are always just a little fizzy. With a noisegate and a TS9 with the drive rolled all the way off, the volume cranked, and the tone at noon it does a decent job of taming that fizziness.
This is probably Ryan's best playing in awhile. Metal tonez from an orange box are surprising.

I'm so glad I finally got to hear decent Lace pickups demos. Keep up the good work man!.... also any chance in hell of demonstrating some other laces sensors? like some of the dually models?
I think this is the only video of fluffz that makes the amp sound like it haz ballz. All other Fluffz demos make the amps sound hi-mid/treble friendly... i like it.. also .. Orange ;)
Killer tone!
How loud is this in the room when recording the song in the video?
Killer tone!!! It has a lot of soul to it…Was thinking of picking up the rockerverb until I listened to this.
Would this be a good set up for grunge/post-grunge rock like ..... Nirvana/Seether
so far my band is a 3 pc with 2 guitars kinda funny , but we might have bassist in our hands as of now, that aside.... we cover nirvana and seether songs as well three days grace and a handfull of other bands we would like to try out. eventually we hopefully will start writing our own music.
just bought one of these for 1600 bucks.. happy happy
You and Ola get amazing metal tones
+Tomasz Gutka
Jim Root still plays a bone stock Rockerverb 100 for his brootz. He's gone to the mk3 version though.
Awesome review
What tuning are you in
Damn that's nice tone. Thanks for the demo.
Cool vid and review dude, thanks for sharing
This thing sounds MASSIVE. I love it. Orange forever! :D
FLUFF this amp deserves a revisit
awesome riffery!
Your videos are amazing! You have a band?
Let me answer. I have the or15, and yes, it can do some of the best metal tones out there so the or50 could do metal tones also
Can't do brutal stuff? On teh contrary...that was some of the best tone I've heard from you yet! Punchy, defined, crunchy and THICK as fuck. I love it.
Can i get a Amen on the "thick as fuck" sound??!!!
+T- Hawk I reckon it would sound good with a han taun
+Fred Basset Thank Fred. So any Klone should work then?
+T- Hawk yep or ts9 or I heard the bad monkey is good for the price
Ryan the or100 accepts well overdrives and distortions pedals? Thank´s my friend!
+Phill PT Mostly the Clean Channel
Mastodon is riding Oranges.
That's pretty heavy shit.
Heyzoosdefuckingcrisco, I recall when I was about 7, I saw a Orange head in a local pawn shop & wondering WTF it was.
EL34's? THAT tight? I could've sworn it was EL84! Good demo, Fluff, thx.
This sounds fucking awesome!
I'm dedicated to marshalls when I played the orange rockerverb I wanted to switch over but the price was ridiculous
Orange amps are worth every penny and most of them excellent amps. Marshall has a million different models with few good ones. Big difference. It seems Marshall just throws amps out there and see what works. Orange only release solid products.
Would've been kinda cool to see it with the maxxon
Man, I need to get myself one of those!
Debating this bad boy or the Rockerverb 100 mkii...tough choice.
what cab. would you suggest to run the OR100 through? 25watt or 30watt speakers. I looking at orange 4X12 straight and vintage ,angled marshall 25watt cabs
+Joseph Murdough EarCandy Buzzbomb
Holy shit! 52 lbs. is insane. Pretty indistinguishable from 70 when you're lifting it.
Yes. IF you have the right cab/load-box, you can get quite close.
that sounds fucking colossal
Love the cornflakes analogy.
