How to Dry Paint Properly No Scratches

  • AMMO Hydrate is one of my favorite products because it is designed to correct a major problem I was having on extremely rare painted surfaces. I discovered that improperly DRYING your car caused just as many scratches, as improperly washing your car. So I needed to figure out a better (ie...safer) way to remove water from the surface of delicate paint because traditional methods (squeegee, water blade, and old chamois) were effective at removing water, but introduced unnecessary scratches during use. (Using air is a great option, but most of my clients old cars to do allow safe usage, due to the paints extreme sensitivity) I solved my issue by creating a product that adds lubrication between the drying device and the surface of your paint....But this discovery only got me half the way there. I need to re-think the drying device as well. I wanted to a tool that not only picked up water,, but would pick up any "remaining dirt" left on the paint after a wash. My first choice was a traditional microfiber towel (at +/- 300 gsm). However, everyone knows, that dry microfiber towels don't pick up water naturally. It's somewhat difficult to soak up standing water effectively. So I hit a road block....then I thought about getting the MF towel wet or "damp"...and it worked perfectly! (why?, I'm not sure...but it does. When a MF towel is "damp" it seems to remove water from the surface of paint much more effectively)
    Now I have a soft and safe device to remove water (and "left over" dirt) from the surface of your paint, with the help of a hydrophobic lubricant that adds depth and shine to the surface you are drying. (This took forever to figure out, but was totally worth it. Hydrate is a game changer and the product I am most proud of because no one has ever thought of drying your car as a major part of paint care or "preventative" maintenance.

      I only detail my own car, and I use AMMO stuff. It really isn't that expensive. I have owned my car for two years and just finished my first bottle of skin. Foam is 17 bucks. This stuff is not that much more than inferior stuff that may not be as safe. Plus if you go to a car wash you are spending at least 20 bucks every two weeks. Plus the less you have to polish out scratches the better. That is time consuming for the amateur like myself. The first batch of paint regimen I bought off Larry for 125 lasted almost a year and a half!

    In case you're still wondering why this works. it's because water molecules bond with other water molecules through something called a hydrogen bond. It's the reason water puddles up together, and it also explains why adding water to your microfiber cloth will actually make it more absorbent. Although it won't hold as much water as a dry cloth, it will definitely pick up water much more effectively, as the water in the cloth bonds to the water on the car (which is not bonded to the car), so it just gets picked up by the cloth. It's awesome to see that at work though, I'm going to start using that trick! Thanks!

    You can use a leaf blower for sure, but sometimes it blows too much dust and dirt up because its not as exact as air compressor. (Although a bit safer) just be sure to rinse down your work space prior using the blower to avoid having more dust re-settle on the surface of the paint. Good point though

    This is an old video and I watched it already but revisiting it, You said this is a new category of products!
    I've been using Sonax High Speed Wax after every single wash based on their recommendations. They say: "Use it after you dry the car or while the car is wet after washing it". It will give you a long lasting protection lasting many weeks and adds deep nice shine to the car which is what I noticed!!!
    This product is there on amazon.com since 2010 and on amazon.de since 2007!!!
    Maybe in the US, you don't have such category of products!
    When spraying it on the car while it's wet, it does exactly what your hydrate does. Repels water, makes drying easier and after the car is fully dry within 30 minutes you can notice the gloss.
    Good video and keep up man, You are a top notch!

    when it comes to a very dark colored car you can simply wipe the car or just lean on the car with your hand and there will be a scratch in the paint lol. I use a soft water blade and a 700-800 loops per square inch microfiber drying towel... and I don't run onto problems... if I missed a spot(because nobody is perfect) I skip it with the blade and catch it with the microfiber. because I do mobile detailing I use 100% soft water so outside in the sun is not a problem and car stays wetter longer even with soap on it (not saying to leave it on for an extended time) I use a foam cannon so as I'm washing the car it stays soaped up and wetter longer giving me and the soap a chance to work. as far as the water blade always get a soft blade and thoroughly rinse vehicle... if vehicle is relatively contaminant free (by claying) and waxing then dirt (what little there is) will be captured/suspended in the water droplets and glide right off wether it be with the blade or just wether it just roll off of the car.
    bottom line guys is when it comes to dark colored vehicles they are always going to be more reflective and amplify imperfections no matter what you do. if you are that asinine about your vehicle. it would be best to get the paint as close as possible to perfect and apply a ceramic or glass coating. this will help greatly. otherwise you will maybe once every 6mo to a yr always need to polish and wax your vehicle to keep that clarity in it. I can agree that a microfiber drying towel is superior to a chamois

    Water breaks hydrogen bonds formed within the fibres. This makes the fibres softer, and the exposed hydroxyl groups make the surface more hydrophilic. It's the latter process that makes a damp cloth more able to soak up water than a dry cloth.

    I own a full service hand car wash, and we have been using damp towels for more than a decade to dry after the car is air dried. The science reason the damp towel works better is because of the water's capillary action. Water has hydrogen bonds, and it tends to pull towards other water molecules.

People may think you are crazy because you are able to be intrinsically obsessed about these cars but trust me, people appreciate this shit.

    It is safe to do...but I recommend using window cleaner afterwards. But to answer your question....I use the MF towel to dry the glass as well, but I dont waste Hydrate (by re-squirting or re-applying to the MF towel) when drying the glass. Make sense? Good question btw!

    The reason why a damp microfiber towel will pick up water better is due to the hydrogen bonds in water. So the water in the microfiber towel will pull more water to itself, but if the towel was dry ... there is no water to pull to itself.

  • @brianmogle1121

    Just like the other few comments have mentioned and as you also have said, you want to touch the paint surface as little as possible to keep from scratching or damaging it, so a blower would be the best method for drying a car. Gets into all of the cracks and seams on the body, seals, jams and mirrors without a scratch!

    • @AMMO-NYC
      @AMMO-NYC  5 лет назад +1

      For the creases and mirrors...yes. But your car (no ones car) is every perfectly clean after washing. So when you dry in this fashion and use a lubricate its safe and incredibility effective. Much more than just a blower. Blowers are loud and it will take you 30 mins to use JUST a blower to dry the paint. However, if that works for you, then I encourage you to continue

    They actually have microfiber towels specifically for drying. I have 2 that I use that soak up SO many more times their weight in water. To be extra safe, I never wipe with them to dry, only lay it on the surface and pat it down. Of course, my dilemma is that by the time I finish washing my car, the sections that I started on first will have already dried mostly by themselves leaving water spots! To solve that, I'm now looking at buying a gallon container of quick detailer fluid so I can use that after every wash.

      Charlie Tan lol I though it was only me, i do the same and that happens to me. by the time I'm half car drying I need to pick my water spot remover. my car is black and i try to keep it as spotless and shiny as possible. i now try to dry the car a little bit faster and with quick detailer. i has worked better, no more time spending with water marks remover lol.

    • @cman32826
      @cman32826 9 лет назад

      haha nope, you're not the only one. I think I'm going to alter my procedure now. I think I'm going to split my washing in 3 segments so I can dry in between, each time not giving enough time for water to dry even in full sun. Wish I had a water distillation aparatus for the garden hose..

    • @joemarks3719
      @joemarks3719 9 лет назад +2

      Charlie Tan Use a pooling rinse after you have rinsed all the soap off, using just the end of the hose without any attachment for pressure, start from the top and work down, you can remove around 80%-90% of the water this way, if your paint is in good condition, the slow stream of water will just slide off, removing most all of the water beads. When your done, 1 spray per panel of detail spray, and you'll dry your car in no time. Adams polishes makes an awesome detail spray.

      Charlie Tan Try Eagle One Nano spray wax. I have both the Nano and a gallon of Mquries quick detail er. The Nano is clear and will last much longer. If you have dark paint, only way to go. Cant find it by the gallon. Try it once and you will be sold. I just put carnuba wax on one door.Nano on the other. So far after only washing cant tell the difference. The Nano took only 20 seconds while the carnuba was a job compared.

    I have used microfibers and shammies. It honestly just depends on the shammy you use. Some are garbage but the one I use I have used for years and it is far more effective than any microfiber could be. With microfibers, they actually scratch your paint because they have more grooves or "heads" than a shammie does. Additionally, microfibers require multiple passes, increasing the risk for scratches, whereas a good shammie will only require one, very light, pass. Good luck my fellow motor heads!!

    Larry talks about how squeegees are bad, but there are different types of squeegees. I have a brand of car cleaning products and there's this squeegee where you have a "T" shapped blade, in order to not push the dirt around the paint. I wonder if all squeegees are bad, because I have been using this one and its less agressive than a regular towel at least.

  • @JerryPena
    @JerryPena 9 лет назад +13

    I just can't see a car with so much layers (metal, primer, paint, clearcoat, polish, sealant, wax, etc..) absorbing the leftover moisture. What's happening is the leftover moisture is being dissipated and evaporated with time. The reason you don't see the water spot is because of the chemicals in the bottle you're using. Larry I love your work and videos, but I got to call you out on this one. Best thing to dry a car is 2 microfiber towel & distilled water.
    1. You soak the first towel in the distilled water and rinse.
    2. You dry the car with this towel and you'll have leftover moisture just like in the video.
    3. You take the second towel and spray 2-3 spray of distilled water to pick up the reset of the moisture.
    4. You're done.
    The reason you use distilled over regular tap water, is so you don't introduce any Liquified chlorine, Fluorosilicic acid, Aluminium sulphate, Calcium hydroxide, Sodium silicofluoride, lead, etc. to your paint.

    • @lionelcordova5588
      @lionelcordova5588 9 лет назад

      Jerry Pena Great tip Jerry. I do the same, but I like to mist the car with an quick detailing spray to add more lubricity. Distilled water is extremely important, reduces/eliminates water spots.

    • @JerryPena
      @JerryPena 9 лет назад +3

      Lionel Cordova Yep I do the same. Since I already have a distiller that I use to drink my water, I do dilute my quick detailer 4:1. I basically buy a 32oz Meguiar's quick detailer bottle and put 8oz in a 32oz empty bottle and fill the rest with distilled water. I use this to dry the car. I forgot to mention in step 3. But It's so minimal since the quick detailer is mostly made out of water already. And I also do a quick dry with my leaf blower prior to the towles.

    • @Billy-rz1jg
      @Billy-rz1jg 8 лет назад +2

      +Jerry Pena Careful using a leaf blower! You seem pretty smart so you probably already know, but a leaf blower is sucking in air from the outside and if any dust or dirt gets sucked in you'll end up just shooting it out, I recommend putting panty hose or some other mesh to catch the dirt before you sandblast your paint.

    • @SportSoulLife
      @SportSoulLife 5 лет назад

      Billy McCock Late to the party, but i dont see how a leafblower is any worse than driving down the highway when it comes to particles in the air being shot at the car. What i would be most worried about is blasting exhaust gasses on a freshly cleaned car (as far as i know, the exhaust gasses are directed into the "tube")

    • @toddstevens3049

  • @michaeldematto6742
    @michaeldematto6742 7 лет назад +1

    Everyone that has washed a car a few times knows that wet towel draws water better than dry towels, this was some strange news for Mr Ammo. Also, the out of this earth phenomenon of the pores of the paint absorbing the AMMO Hydrate, oh hello, it's called evaporation, ever heard of it, evaporation. There is no such thing as pores when the paint has multiple coats of wax on it, the pores have been clogged up by the wax, it's just evaporation happening, and the streaks you see is the oil in the product.
