My 93 year old Chinese grandmother passed away in early July this year. It was a huge shock to the family as her decline in health was so sudden. My siblings and I were raised by her since a young age when parents were working so whether we like it or not, most of our core values were instilled from her. Reflecting back on watching Mulan, grandma Fa literally encapsulates her: from grandma’s hilarious side comments, coming home from the weekly Chinese community club with money from bets she’s won from playing mahjong (without letting parents know), and just generally looking out from us, especially when I got into trouble as a kid, she’d be there ♥️ She was a force to be reckoned with, especially when she grew up with the Japanese invading China during the world war and she had to flee on foot to Hong Kong. Absolute legend of a woman that I was glad to have had in my life, and whilst I did have some issues as we all do as immigrant children, I wouldn’t have changed the memories I’ve made and will forever cherish them. I hope I become half the woman she was. 我愛你啊嫲嫲♥️
I'd have loved a scene between her and Mulan. Because it's clear Mulan got a great deal of her personality from her grandmother, her courage, wit and kindness. Would've been lovely to get a scene which highlighted this.
The grandma in mulan was definetly one of my favorite characters in the film and my favorite scene from her was when she walked across the road blind with a cricket . She a baddie for sure
