Thanks for the shout-out, and I was glad to help. I have read elsewhere that the original paddle controllers will work with this system, you can get them on eBay for fairly cheap. I just haven't gotten around to ordering a set.
Oh hey! I appreciate your help from before. There's a retro game store about an hour and a half away from me. I was thinking of going there and seeing if I could pick up some original 2600 and Genesis controllers to test with it.
Patton Plays I'm majorly interested to know if the X works okay or not with original 2600 paddles, can you let us know / do a video of you manage to get some to test it with?

The Flashback collections for modern consoles allow you to play them with analog sticks, and there are a number of control settings for the mapping, but it still just doesn't quite do it.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! I think my favorite thing about the 2600 was fun it was with the simplicity of the games. You really don't need a lot to create a fun game and sometimes I think companies nowadays get distracted by so much and forget to make their games "fun".
Man I bought one of these along time ago but was disappointed with the controller, so much input lag! I so bad wish I had my original atari 2600 and games I had as a kid! My grandpa was a major collector and after he died in the 80s and my grandma gave me his stuff! I can't remember what happened to the stuff!

It definitely looks more like a six-switch 2600 than any of the earlier Flashbacks, but, hmm, no BW/color switch. There are actually a few games that did something unusual with that switch for game control--I suppose you couldn't play them on this hardware... (I'm one of the weirdos who would be disappointed by the inclusion of the arcade Space Invaders instead of the 2600 version. I know Taito seems to prefer people to port the original, but as a kid who grew up playing the 2600, to me the very different-looking 2600 Space Invaders is the iconic one. And it's THE game that made the console a megahit, so it feels odd to leave it out of a collection.)

You're absolutely right. You hit the nail on the head. Excellent point I was thinking the exact same thing. I was glad to have space Invaders, I wanted the the home version
I am just amazed at how they made it so difficult to upgrade the firmware. You actually have to take it open. I suspect that was some kind of legal issue that caused that.
So if you have the original controllers , it seems they would work on this? And wondering if you need both sets of paddles , meaning tennis paddles and racing paddles, or would the double paddles work for everything. The gameplay and sound looks great. Might have to get one.
Yeah the original controllers should work. As to what degree I don't know yet. Me and Cass might take a trip next weekend to a retro game store and I can try to pick some stuff up.
The original driving paddles were definitely different, but to be honest, I can't recall any game other than Indy 500 supporting them. I believe there was a homebrew game or two made to, but not any other official releases that I know of. In theory, the regular paddles wouldn't work, because they only have about 270 degress of travel. The driving controllers are free spinning.

I like the style of this Atari flashback x but the Atari flashback 9 is the one to get it has the SD slot for adding more games (bin format) and the paddle issue has been solved by buying a set of custom paddles from eBay also another option would be the Sams club legend's flashback 2019 it plays (a26 format) Atari ROMs off the SD card

Question: Does anyone know if the 2600 extender cables will work with the flashback joysticks, or will they only work on the original 2600 joysticks? Thanks in advance!
UPDATE: I can confirm that the 2600 joystick extender cables on Amazon are 100% compatible with the Flashback X. The extra 10 ft per joystick allows perfect gaming distance from your TV. I only wish I could say the same thing for the 2600 paddle controllers. YES, they will work, but are very glitchy and not as responsive as one would want them to be. I was born in the 80's, and I love classic/retro games...but Atari games are so primitive looking. Still, good for a historical visual in your game room. Will you actually play it often though?
Yeah they definitely have a primitive look. I really love how basic they are though, especially the multiplayer games. I think that is where most of the fun is!
@@PattonPlays thank you so much for your reply. I'll have to try before I knock it too hard. I saw it at Sam's Club (the 110 version) for 40 bucks about a month ago.
1. Massive library, always fun to try an obscure game (I loaded my flashback up with extra games) 2. The best of them have excellent gameplay (ms Pacman, space invaders, river raid and many more) 3. Nostalgia value. All up, I do play atari 2600 regularly despite the primitive graphics
You can, just not paddles. From what I’ve heard on the interwebs, this console has never been set up to accept paddle support, despite containing a batch of paddle-specific games.
Do you think a original sega genesis controller will work with it or the atgames one will work with it. Maybe that’s why they have it for a boarder? Maybe.
The two things I find interesting about this console are that it’s the best designed AtGames Flashback yet, *but* also the scarcest one and the one released with almost no attention. The thing has been available for at least three months. I just learned of it a week ago. It’s not in stores at all, contrary to seeing all of its predecessors everywhere in the past. Apparently there is no paddle support for it, either, from what I hear. Original paddles don’t register on it and AtGames hasn’t produced any that work for it.
Thank you. I had never heard of this store before but learned there is one 12 miles from me. I’ll give them a call tomorrow and check. It’s not too far but it’s a horrible drive to waste if they don’t have any.
The Flashback X is the latest version. If you get the deluxe version, which is sold at Sam's Club, you get 120 games. Also, with a firmware upgrade, you can add OTG support to hook a USB drive up and add more games, no need for an SD card.
I got my AtGames Atari Flashback X from Amazon and when I checked the "About" section of the menu and while it does have the two QR codes on the screen, it says "UID IS NOT AVAILABLE". What does that mean? I was able to get the firmware update installed, but that message where the UID should be concerns me.
So weird, I got my older one off the clearance rack at Bed Bath And Beyond too. Must be the “Beyond?” My fiancée got me this one and I have never looked back. Especially since the wireless controllers fir the 8 no longer seem to work.
The flashback 9 has the SD card slot and it can do everything this one does the only downfall of the flashback 9 is its larger than this one and it doesn't work with the original paddles you have to order custom paddles on eBay other than that the flashback 9 is the one to get
No controller lag is huge!!! On the Atari Flashback 8 Gold, and I'm sorry to say that there's about a fifth of a second lag on both wireless AND corded controllers for that system. It's small enough not to notice if you're not looking for it, but big enough to make some games really frustrating and other games virtually unplayable. I didn't even notice it until I bought an original 7800 ProSystem and starting buying some of my favorite games on cart that I already had on the Flashback (didn't want to have to switch back and forth between consoles). To my surprise, a lot of games just played better on the original hardware! Certain games, like River Raid and Kaboom! straight up sucked on the Flashback 8 Gold, but are brilliant on original hardware. Other games like Gravitar and Adventure didn't seem to suffer all that much with the very slight controller lag. I'm glad that ATGames finally straightened that out!
does this come with the MOS Technology 6507 + TIA chip? in other words, can you mod it to play original games and or cartridges (create a cartridge slot like was possible with the Flashback 2)?
Nice review--and nice tunes, 8-bit Rush, love it! Curious that the MAME version of Space Invaders was on there. I read a few reviews that some of the games were not "the originals". I wonder why, if they have the license to a game, they'd not put the 2600 version on there? I also wonder how many of the others are not original...
I was just out of high school when I saw one of these on display for try-out at Sears. It was way ahead of anything else on the consumer market at the time, and the cartridges added to the attraction. However, I found myself quickly bored with the simple games and blocky graphics. Arcade video games were much more entertaining.
Is it possible to add Atari 7800 games to this? Im intersted in this system when it goes on sale but I would love to fill it up with 2600 and 7800 games. Possibly also add other old school Commodore, amiga etc.
Flashback 2 can play real cartridges since its a true hardware clone and not emulation. All the solder pads exist on the model 2 because it was made by Legacy Engineering (same for the model 1) so it's still the best model of Flashback. Flashback 2 is legendary, and I can play ET on it.
Hi Patton everyone should get this at games Atari flashback x right Patton your the best hard working man in the world and keep up the good work😃Your awesome Patton😃
Nice review! First question: Do Sega Genesis gamepads work on this Flashback? They did not work on the Flashback 8 Gold. If Sega Genesis controllers don't work, it's worth trying out the Sega Master System controller which I found DID work on the Flashback 8 Gold (so it may work on the Flashback X for an Atari gamepad experience). Second question: How durable do the joysticks seem to be? The Flashback 8 Gold joysticks were incredibly flimsy, and I snapped off my Player 1 joystick within 4 months. I found that the ATGames website barely worked and it was virtually impossible to obtain a replacement controller without a tremendous hassle. Even after I reattached my broken joystick, there was still a really bad grind on the right side of the joystick moving from up/right to down ight. This made certain games really hard to play. In other words, the joysticks were clearly not meant to last!
The "Sweet child of mine" digi music in background was nice. Thx for the vid.
Glad you liked it!
The Spirit of Radio at the end is even better!

Being that the controllers have the 9 pin plug like the original, I wonder if you can use the old controllers?
You are supposed to be able to yes.
Maybe.
I would think it would since they worked on the original as well. I didn't have any to test with to check.
I'm also assuming the OTG I currently use for my NES mini will work.
It should!
Can you make it go widescreen with smooth graphics?
I didn't see any screen or smoothing options. Just a scan line filter.
@@PattonPlays Thanks for letting me know.
The music in the background sounds like sweet child of mine but video game version
No have SD port?
The two things I find interesting about this console are that it’s the best designed AtGames Flashback yet, *but* also the scarcest one and the one released with almost no attention. The thing has been available for at least three months. I just learned of it a week ago. It’s not in stores at all, contrary to seeing all of its predecessors everywhere in the past. Apparently there is no paddle support for it, either, from what I hear. Original paddles don’t register on it and AtGames hasn’t produced any that work for it.
Yeah it's much easier to find these online than in stores.
Thank you. I had never heard of this store before but learned there is one 12 miles from me. I’ll give them a call tomorrow and check. It’s not too far but it’s a horrible drive to waste if they don’t have any.
Thanks again for that info. Sadly, they tell me they do not have any.
Just bought this but I’m not getting any sound...help!?
Great video as always, patton!
Did you test a custom firmware that doesn't require a usb to store dowloaded games?
Do these controllers work on an original Atari 2600 Like the Atari flashback 2 controllers?
Too bad no paddles. Many of the included games really need them. Is there a third party option for paddles?
I have the Atari Flashback 9 Gold. How does the new X model compare to the 9?
Not really sure besides the cosmetics tbh.
This model not here latest here is Atari Flashback 9 Gold HD do we know what the difference is
I know it looks different. Not sure beyond that.
120 Games & SD Card on the Gold 9
She got mine at Family Dollar for 20bucks!
How long are the controllers? Do they get the job done for a modern set up, or would you recommend an extension cable?
This looks INCREDIBLE! It's a shame that Space Invaders isn't the original version though.
So, how's the paddle response. With past versions it was just too sluggish.
What version of Space Invaders is that? Is that the arcade version?
Is the Sweet child O mine in the background?
Isn't Pitfall 2 included and Battlezone?
I want a de-make of Out of This World for Atari
All its missing is the sd card slot...dang it ....
Warr Klownn Good old Atgames always screwing something up... also controller ports on the back??? That’s just dumb.
I'm glad that ATGames finally straightened that out!
does this come with the MOS Technology 6507 + TIA chip? in other words, can you mod it to play original games and or cartridges (create a cartridge slot like was possible with the Flashback 2)?
did they stop selling these, or are they just frequently out of stock?
Can you use OG Atari controllers with it and vice versa?
I've read you can. I didn't have any I could personally test. I did hear some people had trouble with theirs.
@@PattonPlays I'll have to try it out. I've got a little collection of minis going myself.
Nice review--and nice tunes, 8-bit Rush, love it! Curious that the MAME version of Space Invaders was on there. I read a few reviews that some of the games were not "the originals". I wonder why, if they have the license to a game, they'd not put the 2600 version on there? I also wonder how many of the others are not original...
could you plz explain how to hook this up to a tv
I was just out of high school when I saw one of these on display for try-out at Sears. It was way ahead of anything else on the consumer market at the time, and the cartridges added to the attraction. However, I found myself quickly bored with the simple games and blocky graphics. Arcade video games were much more entertaining.
I can understand people being turned off by how primitive the games could be. It really is for multiplayer or nostalgia.
Is it possible to add Atari 7800 games to this? Im intersted in this system when it goes on sale but I would love to fill it up with 2600 and 7800 games. Possibly also add other old school Commodore, amiga etc.
Not that I am aware of.
Hopefully Atari add Galaxaian to the list I would definitely buy the console
At one of my local stores they’re on sale for $20 might go buy another one
Oh wow!
one of my favorite games was the slated ET... do any of these minis come with that game?
Flashback 2 can play real cartridges since its a true hardware clone and not emulation. All the solder pads exist on the model 2 because it was made by Legacy Engineering (same for the model 1) so it's still the best model of Flashback. Flashback 2 is legendary, and I can play ET on it.
Hi Patton everyone should get this at games Atari flashback x right Patton your the best hard working man in the world and keep up the good work😃Your awesome Patton😃
I definitely recommend it!
Even after I reattached my broken joystick, there was still a really bad grind on the right side of the joystick moving from up/right to down
ight. This made certain games really hard to play. In other words, the joysticks were clearly not meant to last!
Does it have an SD slot to add every game?
