I have deep talks with my 9 yo all the time about this kind of stuff. He asks questions and I'm always honest with him. If I don't know the answer we find it together. He'll be better prepared for the real world.
Honestly, media is one of the best "immersion" learning tools for languages. It gives you the words, in context, how they're intended to be used and not that strictly textbook way no one uses. A TON of people do that for English, Spanish, and Japanese
Not me getting emotional hearing about Gus's dad, figuring it out before Gus did, and doing his best to get his wife to the same place he's at so his kid would be okay.
the comments about going back home to your tiny village in the middle of nowhere really hits home. So cool to see first generation from a tiny village representation in a format like this, I've never ever seen it before. Super cool to have relatable experience with somebody whose family comes from a place very distant from my own.
100% agree on the self-gaslighting thing, + what infuriates me is how the widespread misuse of the word gaslighting undermines the experiences of actual gaslighting survivors.
Greeks are white now; and to be honest, most would have considered them white in the 80s. But when my grandfather (ethnic Greek from Turkey) came to the US in 1915, they definitely weren't seen as white. There were even some anti-Greek riots here and there. But obviously their situation could not be compared with that of Black people. He married an upper middle class woman from North Carolina, and that did not go well - they had to elope. But Greeks became economically successful pretty quickly, and I think that propelled them more into acceptance, to where they mostly were considered white, just a little tan. I guess they faded. :-) Of course there still was quite a divide between those who learned English well, and those who didn't, especially where they were large great communities. So there was a pretty severe generation gap between kids who were growing up quite American, and the parents who were kind of clueless about American culture, and even threatened by it, especially when it came to freedoms for women. I.e., their daughters.
The portion of the show in which you describe your things that have to stop, is exactly the same as a local radio show spot where i live in which they state their lists of things that must go. I think its interesting that the same idea can be thought of twenty odd years apart of each other.
The only useful thing "self gaslighting" describes is impostor syndrome. Everyone i know with ADHD has expressed thinking "I'm just lazy". I had anxiety nausea so bad that I vomited once a week for a year and still thought "I must just have a sensitive belly" instead of getting the meds and therapy that finally got me through it. So she's describing something real but coopting different terms that feel silly and not giving any context to keep people accountable when they actually are the problem.
I'd love it if the interviewee could be flipped because, when they look at Gianmarco in real life, on screen it looks like they're looking at the other person and viceversa
How he played the intro. Post joke. Almost planned . Hahaha too cute. Love Gianmarco. Love the new blood east coast comedians. like ALOT. .maybe being from MA
Which village is this that they are afraid they could be killed for being gay? They would be judged probably but killed ? In Greece? Overdramatic and untrue
Maybe Crete. But in this day and age, I doubt it. Probably just a lot of κουτσομπολιό. :-) Dad would scream, mom would wail, they might disown the kid for a while, but families are generally too tight for them to just give up a son.
Listening to stories about someone else's insane Greek family, and with the accent too, that's comfort right there.
especially because this came out the day of my uncle’s wake. we bonded over this
10:25 - honestly i wish more parents were like this. Stop lying to kids and start telling them how life works

@@rosecity_chris you're a great parent, that kid's lucky to have you❤️
It’s a belief system, what’s wrong with that? What’s wrong with teaching children to share your values?
That reminded me of José Sarduy's story about his mom and the chickens 😂😂😂

Yeah they sell lots of English learning materials using shows like Friends
I watch your shorts and all. When I saw the shorts from this podcast I knew I had to watch the full one. This was my first and it was prime.
Same!!

Marti Gould Cummings is a great, underrated NYC Drag Queen that is witty and political
@@GianmarcoSoresi it's just you in drag isnt it?
Gianmarco clutching his Pearl during the Sven story was SO FUNNY

I lovedd the death talk most Greek shit ever😭
PLEASE MIRROR THE GUEST VIDEO!! So much more satisfying to watch them look the right way haha 😂
I don't mind looking at space. But the ocean? That is overwhelming. Especially when you see it in person.
To be honest, when I first heard he was straight I did feel a bit betrayed. Glad I stayed subscribed.
Love how Gianmarco set up that whole anecdote like Tova had missed her flight, when actually she realized in time and didn’t miss it 😂
58:00 as a tall woman i feel your pain, gus lol
also, gianmarco is 6’3”???? 😳 WTF he does not look that tall on camera
Love this ep so much 💖

That’s my favorite episode there should be more with Gus
Love this podcast episode!
54:25 is a double Edged sword
Like she's gonna be fine so you don't have to worry
But you don't have enough worrying evidence to stop her

Gus is hilarious!! I love the Liberal Boomer takes, I am so here for it!
Rich people gaslighting you into thinking you’re gaslighting yourself
Self gaslighting sounds more like over rationalisation.
I have such a crush on Russel .. so handsome❤❤❤
lol Gianmarco, did you mean to add an SNL video to The Downside youtube playlist like 3 months ago? 😂 or was that an accident?
the video in question for anyone curious: ruclips.net/video/QZvClZxlkYE/видео.html

Is he really 6'4?
I've met GM in person at his show. Yes, he really is 6'4", and I have the pictures to prove it.
