Having multiple filters and an established tank is always going to help when cleaning with tap water. Is it that chlorine doesnt kill or that your tank is reproducing bacteria very quickly 🤷♂️🤷♂️ Regardless I would never recommend a beginner to do it. Yes I 've seen Jason's video on the study and, all due respect to him, but one guy's video is not going to make me start using and cleaning all my bio-media with tap water. Or recommending that others do it either. It may all be 100% true but I dont want to be the guinea pig, lol I have no problem rinsing my biomedia in tank water while cleaning sponges in tap water, no need to change that because studies show it takes 79.54294 minutes for 37.987 ppm of chlorine to start killing, 🤣 No thanks, I'll just use tank water and leave the calculator for another purpose...JMHO 😊

Kev love the videos keep them up. Can you do a video on your tank set up’s. Like what lights you run your heaters filters all that. Would really love to see some in-depth on that.
I just started trying it on a 120g super over stocked tank. No negative effects I've seen. As far as reduction in waste, hard to judge but the tank looks a "little" better...lol.
I've never had to use it because my tanks stay clean and clear. But I've heard from many others its a great product that works in keeping the sludge and grime away.
First time I actually laughed at a aquarium video, other than that spot on, but I do use tap water to clean my sponges, same temperature but never a problem as I don't count on my mechanical for bio!
Love your videos and they have helped me as a beginner in so many ways! thank you for all the advice. I have a 75 gal tank with two Fluval 406’s. Should I have the same set up in each canister or do you recommend something different?

When installing a new fx6 (placing seeded bio media from old filter into new filter), can the install be done during a water change or is it better installing new fx6 in middle of the week, before the water change?
If the wave maker is positioned correctly, causing surface agitation you shouldnt need an airstone, generally. But that also depends on how many fish you have in what size tank....
Thats a tough video to make because there is no standard number. It depends on your tanks maturity and how hands on you want to be with water changes and dosing products...In general 3-5 at a time is usually safe.
Doing 80% weekly water changes, do you use chlorinated tap water and if so, how long will the beneficial bacteria and fish survive before dosing with water conditioners?
That all depends on the chlorine content in your source water. I've never done an experiment to try and find out how long. Some say it needs to be in the tank for a long time before it affects them...But I just stay on the safe side and dose prime immediately.
Thanks for this vid. This question ran around in my mind until I decided I would try my own thing. I dont really do a full change. I do about 3.5 gal into the bucket on a 20gal planted tank. Then squeeze the sponges a few times in the bucket. I do that every 2 months or so. But I have lots of plants and thick substrate. I'm not sure I need the filter for the bacteria colony.
Have you tried Seneye Reef Monitor ? I have a fresh water tank and was looking for something which will measure ammonia and will provide notifications.

Hello my bro, one more killer video, of who knows quite a lot about this hobby, straight to the point, it's very easy just don't try to event the wheel again. Always good to see yr videos. 😉😉
Thanks for this video. I have always followed the rule of no filter clean and water change the same day. I run a 65 gallon heavily planted and heavily stocked with small community fish. I'm running 2 Oase filters (250 and 350) along with a power head for extra surface agitation and water movement. The tank has been up and running for more than a year. Water parameters are fine. I do a weekly water change of about 20% when nitrates are between 10 and 25ppm or less. I am wondering why after five or six hours the tank goes slightly milky. The next day the water is crystal clear as it was before the water change. I would welcome your thoughts
That's a bacteria bloom!!!! Also plants love nitrogen!!! 20 ppm is what the plants love, and your taking out their food. I always want at least 20 ppm that's the sweet spot, maybe trywater change every 2 weeks.
You may be over water changing, causing a mini bacterial bloom. 10-25ppm of nitrate is not that high and im sure your plants are helping to keep that number low. You may want to switch to bi-weekly 25% water changes. Also check this video out on bacterial blooms - ruclips.net/video/46fcHvoellI/видео.html
@@100bgeagle Thank you for your input. This is pretty much what Kev said. Thank you for taking the time and caring enough to respond. What a great community.
I use 3 filters on a 120g. 2 FX6s and a Fluval 407 for polishing/chem use. My conscience is clear...lol. The extra filter idea is actually more for water movement but with the Bio benefits.
Thats a good idea! I'll add it to my list. 😁 So you know, I've tried them both, even both at the same time. They both work equally great, and tank looks just as good when you use one or the other, no need to use both, but I choose Purigen because you get more for the cost.
Great video! No one ever told me this!! I just changed my water and filter 2weeks ago and I’m already seeing algae. I just got a new 90 gallon two months ago and I don’t have any algae eaters. I have a fresh water tank and I feed them a little a day. Trying to find why the algae builds so quickly. Any suggestions? Would really appreciate your help. The local aquarium store confuses me because you get different answers each time you go. They have employees barely out of high school!🥴😟 Thank you.
Firstly be sure it's algae and not diatoms, they are different and have different causes but if it is algae the usual number one culprit is too much light. People often have their tank lights way too bright and 99.9% of people have them on for far too many hours a day. Algae starved of light will die off quite quickly. Algae eaters do help but I have yet to see a tank where they take care of all the algae. Sometimes changing the light spectrum can also help, if you have adjustable led lights I hear dropping the blue down low can help but it may also affect your plant growth if you have a planted tank. And don't forget natural light will make algae grow so try not to have your tank near a window
Do you use UV light on your filtration? If not, do you recommend to use one? Thanks for all the info! You are probably the main reason why all my fish are still alive and healthy as a beginner. Not cheap, but certainly worth it if you’re really into fish keeping. Very nice! 👌
I've never had the need for a UV light. Not necessary in a freshwater tank, you can have crystal clear water without one if you're doing everything else correctly. Here's where you can find "everything else" lol - bit.ly/clearH2O
i clean my filter every 6 months during water changes and no issues at all... or maybe its the way im doing it that saves me...i clean it using the water i take out of the tank.
Kev, is there any reason why my water in my aquarium gets worse and cloudy one day after water change? I dont get it I have now 2 filters in my 60 gallon. Marineland magnum with bio and charcoal + my main aquaclear 70. I added this sunday filter floss. Cleaned sponges in aquarium water. It gets worse. Its kind of blurry water. There is no amonia no nitrite nothing. It just looks bad... I would send you picture. Please help.
Not sure how old or mature your tank is, but if its fairly new then your issue is bacterial bloom. Messing with your filters right now cleaning and adding things is disturbing bacterial growth. Water changing during this time period is causing the bloom to reset every time. Watch this, should be helpful - ruclips.net/video/46fcHvoellI/видео.html
i just got some Garlic guard to try from your affiliate link. You really are doing well with the videos. i like the beginner play lift to share with friends.
I just set up my tank and im 3 days in to my cycle process with a few molly fish in the tank but i have a huge problem! I changed my mind on the placement of the tank and i can not move it with all the water in it.... Is it safe to drain and refill right now or does my tank need to complete the cycle first before i move it?? I feel like i just wasted alot of prime and stability if i have to start my cycle all over again
You can drain it and move it. Any bacterial growth that has already happened is going to be in your filter. Keep the filter full of water and open to the air while you move the tank. When you fill back up just continue the prime and stability, you wont lose to much bacteria in the process.
I have a question! You say your for the bigginners !? Well I have a new ish tank 55gallon with fluval 407 and about 13 fish (African cichlids) and the tank is cycles roughly 3 months old…. Now I have no idea when to do my 1st water change ? Or when to do a filter change!? When do I do this? I just don’t want to mess up my cycled tank? I’ve checked my levels and all’s ok ? So I’m not sure if either is needed?
Check your filter after a few months, see what's going on inside with your mechanical filtration, gunked up, or clean the adjust. Do you use a prefilter? Very helpful. Also you should use test strips till you feel comfortable with parameters. Water changes should be done regularly once weekly or biweekly just to replenish the old water.

Hello so I did an 80% water change on my tank and now I can't see any nitrite or nitrate before the 80% Everything was fine but after the 80% it's a disaster so I can see the ammonia but can't see anything else . Any suggestions? Thanks in advance
You're not supposed to have any ammonia or nitrite before or after any size water change. It should not be in your tank IF your tank has cycled. I highly suggest you check out my playlist for beginners. It'll be very helpful for you 😁 - ruclips.net/p/PLP5OXTIIDO8NYvhUHAmwAd54WFmS4d8er

Hello, I just started my mbuna cichlid tank 3 weeks ago and they seem to be doing OK, the tank where I put them is a fully cycled tank and it's been running for years I just took out my tropical fish and I put my cichlids in but my water is soft and I order some cichlid lake salt to make my water harder but I'm not sure how to dose it so my question is... should I still dose my complete tank with the dose recommended on the bottle just for the first time and then keep dosing it based on the water I'm changing? My Ph comes out of the tap at 7.6 and is stable all the time and I do water changes weekly. My GH is 6 degrees My KH is 3 degrees.
Why can't you do both a water change and a filter cleaning if you use 2 filters, I only clean one filter at a time. One this week and the other next week.
Rinsing your filter media in tap water won't crash your tank unless you let the media soak for well over an hour in it. The concentration of chlorine in tap water is so low that it takes an hour and fourty five minutes to kill the types of beneficial bacteria we rely on in our tanks. If tap water had enough chlorine to kill bacteria just by a quick rinse we wouldn't be able to drink it. It would kill all the bacteria in your gut every time you had a glass of water which wild make you very ill and possibly kill you. I have 15 aquariums many fx6, sunsun 304b, aquaclear 110, Tidal 110, and sponge filters and clean all of them in tap water without issue. The problem people have Werth using tap water is they over clean their media. Don't clean your filter till you can see a noticeable reduction in water flow then when you rinse your sponges only give then 3-4 squeezes and that's it. Just enough to get the flow back. If you rinse till the water runs clear you've gone to far. All that brown nastiness is bio film made up of bacteria. If you rinse all of it out you get spikes or mini cycles. I clean on occasion all the filters on a tank in the same day without issue because I don't over clean them. All though I don't recommend doing this. There are test out there where they tested the can't clean in tap water myth where it was proven false. They also tested all the different kinds of media for bacteria growth and time to recover from cleaning. It was pretty surprising which media was the best and what media most people use that doesn't do near as well. I'd be happy to leave a link if anyone is interested.
The best is the moving bed with I believe it's the k2 media but since a moving bed is not an option for most people the best is 30 ppi sponge. If you comment on one of my videos I'll post the link there so it won't get deleted.
Great video/editing today! 🍻 I recently started cleaning the sponges of my FX4 and FX6 in tap water and REALLY rising them out and getting them clean while only rising the biomedia in tank water. It seems to be working very well in my established tanks. The flow is so much higher than it used to be and there’s definitely a difference in water quality in my overstocked peacock/hap tank!
to much cleaning and water changes isn't good if ain't broken don't fix it I see so many ppl doing 2 water changes aweek and full cleaning and they wonder why they fish are dien I jus see to many hobbyist posting vidoes about same vidoes of water changes some ppl jus dont know any better its jus common sense fresh water keeping is the easiest thing to take care of

I need to ask a question. What kind of plants that will help with nitrates? I've just put in red tiger lotus. Please help.
Any live plants will help with nitrates.
Squeezing into a bucket of tank water is the best and safest way to clean!
Great post
Thank you! Glad you're finding the channel helpful! 😁💪
Have you tried Seneye Reef Monitor ? I have a fresh water tank and was looking for something which will measure ammonia and will provide notifications.
No I havent, sorry
You be da man Kaveman! What’s the difference between seachem prime and seachem stability? I only have prime right now.
Prime is primarily a de-chlorinator that also detoxifies ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Stability is beneficial bacteria in a bottle.
Good stuff!
Thank you! Glad you're finding the channel helpful! 😁💪
Hey Kev! Are you going to Aquashella Dallas? Never been before and I’d love to see you there!
It's possible, but nothing confirmed yet 😊

Hello my bro, one more killer video, of who knows quite a lot about this hobby, straight to the point, it's very easy just don't try to event the wheel again. Always good to see yr videos. 😉😉
Totally agree, thank you bro!
How many mbuna Cichlids would you recommend keeping in a 55 gallon corner tank
15-20
Very nice video 👍📸
Thank you! Glad you're finding the channel helpful! 😁💪
When doing a filter cleaning, would adding the appropriate amount of Stability to the tank water be just as good as dosing the filter?
Yes, that would work just as well.
Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it
I’ve done both on the same day. But I have multiple filters I don’t touch that day 😊
With multiple filters its definitely not a problem 👍
@@KaveManAquatics That sounds so right! Thank you for taking the time to offer more education about nitrates and such good advice.
@@100bgeagle Thank you for your input. This is pretty much what Kev said. Thank you for taking the time and caring enough to respond. What a great community.
Think I fall in the over do things list two canister filters and just ordered a tidal 110 hob filter lol
I use 3 filters on a 120g. 2 FX6s and a Fluval 407 for polishing/chem use. My conscience is clear...lol. The extra filter idea is actually more for water movement but with the Bio benefits.
You can never over filtrate. Just makes your water better 😁
@@KaveManAquatics indeed as we all know how messy cichlids are lol
Can you make a segment on Chemi-Blue vs Purigen what’s the difference or which one is better or if it’s good to have both?

Do fish carry beneficial bacteria? They are a surface but I dunno if they have bacteria on them.
lol, thats a great question. Im sure they have some bacteria on them but not necessarily the beneficial kind we always talk about in the hobby...
is that a different color substrate in that peacock tank ?🤔
Yes it is
Always good to be reminded, not that I've ever made a mistake. ( Lol )
🤣🤣 Thats what Im here for
Do you use UV light on your filtration? If not, do you recommend to use one?
Thanks for all the info! You are probably the main reason why all my fish are still alive and healthy as a beginner. Not cheap, but certainly worth it if you’re really into fish keeping. Very nice! 👌
I've never had the need for a UV light. Not necessary in a freshwater tank, you can have crystal clear water without one if you're doing everything else correctly. Here's where you can find "everything else" lol - bit.ly/clearH2O
I have changed the filter and done water change at the same time and fish are good but I didn't clean everything in the tank at the same time
I have done this all along
i clean my filter every 6 months during water changes and no issues at all... or maybe its the way im doing it that saves me...i clean it using the water i take out of the tank.
Thats the best way to clean it to prevent any problems!!
@@KaveManAquatics ok thank you! I will try to leave it as it is without water change for a while.

I’m guilty as charged bro
Hands up!
On top of all i learned from watching you tube i needed this video
lol, glad it was helpful!
But I do this every time for over a year and my fish are well.

My GH is 6 degrees
My KH is 3 degrees.
That is exactly correct. First time dose full volume of water. After that only dose for the amount of water being changed.
@@KaveManAquatics ok thank you very much.
Why can't you do both a water change and a filter cleaning if you use 2 filters, I only clean one filter at a time. One this week and the other next week.
That was exactly the point of the video 😊
i clean my filters a week after water changes thats just me tho.

How is it possible to have a crystal clear tank with very healthy looking fish yet have a toxic ammonia level?
Its not, unless you detoxify the ammonia with something like Prime

Congrats bro! haha
I would really like the link for best bio media. Thanks

@@michaelporcellini5535 I added the link. It got deleted.
The best is the moving bed with I believe it's the k2 media but since a moving bed is not an option for most people the best is 30 ppi sponge. If you comment on one of my videos I'll post the link there so it won't get deleted.

Great video/editing today! 🍻
I recently started cleaning the sponges of my FX4 and FX6 in tap water and REALLY rising them out and getting them clean while only rising the biomedia in tank water. It seems to be working very well in my established tanks. The flow is so much higher than it used to be and there’s definitely a difference in water quality in my overstocked peacock/hap tank!
In your established tank thats perfectly fine to do! 😊💪
