Getting the handle back on. This worked for me: first put the handle on without the attached rod, just to see how it works. It is easiest to put on by 'opening' the door handle then inserting the door handle. After you understand how to put the door handle in without the rod attached, loosen or remove the door "lock" bolts on the "inside" of the door. (the part that attaches to the opposite side when you close the door, it is what that rod is attached to). Now put the rod on the door handle. The loosed door lock enables you to slide the door handle on with the rod attached. I wish I knew the proper names of what I am describing. Sorry! Thanks for the video, you saved me some cash!!!
Thanks for posting the video. My 10 year old son pulled the driver's side door handle thinking it opens the same as the rear sliding door handle and the handle broke. Now my wife and I have to get into the van from the rear sliding door every time. Can't wait to fix the handle so we can finally get into the van normally.
Thank you for taking the time to share this info with all of us. I love my old 2002 Sienna but my one dislike is these stupid door handles breaking! Right now ALL of my handles are broken except the drivers and it is just about to blow!! What a hassle to have to deal with on an otherwise very well built automobile.
Thank you for the video. One difficult part for me was attaching the lever to the yellow clip of the handle. I ended up putting in on from the inside and side hole, rather than through the outside. Took me over an hour to figure out, but I did it and am proud of myself.
Wow, my Sienna is the same. all the door handles are broken. The driver side handle finally completely broke thanks to my son. I just got my door handles in the mail. I just watched your video and am confident now that I can do this. Thank you very much.
Thanks buddy... you just save me 180 bucks my mechanic ask me for two door handle replacement. Let us know where to find you I may stop by with a six pack.
AWESOME. Wish you'd have posted the two door panel videos 10 years ago. You'd have saved me paying the dealer to replace three exterior door handles in my 98 Sienna! Got it this time though. Much thanks. Great job.
I needed to do the front inside handle, but it was easy following your directions. I just needed to know how to get the panel off. Less than an hour to get it done. I used a handle I got off ebay for $10. Nice. Thanks.
It was a helpful video. One thing I would suggest is to show the clips, especially on the inside door handle and the power window panel. (For a noobie like me, it would have been helpful.) Over all, great job. For others who will be watching the video, the most important piece of advice he gives comes between 15:40-16:20. Watch that part twice!
I really appreciate this because I feel I just maybe able to hold my old van together . I use it for kayaking and Toyota said 170. for handle 75. For labor with you showed passenger door its fallen apart in Florida sun..but I love my old van .my husband can no longer help hes had 2 strokes...I really like learning new skills
Thanks for this great Video. It was very helpful to replace my Van's door handle. I had to struggle a bit to connect the cables and snap the new handle lock tab into the slot. But I watched your video again and was able to do it clean. Thanks again.
Most folks will entirely omit touching the door panel controls. You can release the connectors -- from the blind side -- after the panel is loose. Water-pump pliers (Channelocks/Knipex) are dreamy for releasing the connectors. You'll be amazed. Most folks will find the plastic 'catches' too stiff to remove by finger pressure.
Great video, thanks. Like the way you take your time and explain everything. I have done rear handle, driver side slider, and now passenger side front which looks to be the hardest so this is helpful.
When removing the housing around the inside door handle, you should insert a thin bladed screwdriver above the lock to release the housing tab that is there. There is another tab beneath the bottom of the handle itself, between the handle and the same housing. Doing this greatly facilitates getting the housing off of the handle.
No problems getting old one off but understanding how the rods that connect the handle position up against the key cylinder proved very challenging. A few tips would have been helpful
This is a perfect job for 1/4" drive ratchet and sockets -- especially with a wobble head -- or wobble extension. #1 Trick: use (Bounty?) tissue paper as a wadding in your sockets so that the 10mm bolts can't easily pull away/drop. Test your technique first. You'll pick it up in about 20 seconds.
Where was the door lock itself during all of this. I notice it was not visible when you took off the handle and then when you put on the new one you pushed the lock into the hole. Where had it been? Did you take the lock itself off before you took the handle off, and then put it back on.
For some reason, I could not install the handle once the rod was installed from the outside of my '99 XLE. Not enough "give" to allow the new handle to mount into the door with the rod attached to the clip. And it is very difficult to install the rod once the handle is installed as you indicated in the video. I cannot figure out what I did wrong.
Nice, but one mistake. He removed the window control panel by prying up on the end that was close to the arm rest. There is only one clip, and it is on the other end, near the hinges. Once that clip is released, one can lift the panel a bit and then slide it out towards the hinges. This slides a plastic piece out from under the housing on the armrest. But if you pry the panel up from the side by the armrest, then it breaks that piece of plastic. That is what happened to him in the video, and it's what I did when I followed his example.
The video entirely missed the Big Trick: the window glider arm blocks access to the critical bolts. It's best removed -- first. It's held in place with a 10mm bolt -- which you'll see way down the side of the door -- with the bolt facing towards the back of the Sienna. It's all alone. While this seems scary, putting it back is a breeze. It's self-aligning. As you slide it up, blind, once its bolt hole lines up, you've got it. Don't over torque anything. With it out of the way, the mechanism is drastically easier to play with. (You don't even need to pull the glider-arm out of the door cavity. Don't forget to put it back!)
It's poorly shown, but the trick with the door handle trim lies with black plastic 'latches' molded into the panel. These are best removed with a tiny flat-head screwdriver. One pole faces up/ the other down. You slip your tiny driver into the gap and wiggle it in. The plastic latching surface is ~ 1/16" -- not much. These poles are directly in line with the mechanism's hinge. Get your Mark 1 eyeball real close -- with a flashlight -- and there they be. They are strong enough to drive you crazy. The driver merely deflects the trim's plastic enough to slide on by. Suddenly, it's out in a flash -- no sweat. It's also nice to have some prop to hold the weight of the released panel interior while you fiddle with the connectors. I found the common ice chest/cooler to work perfectly for me. You don't want complications with your in-door controls, believe me. The other nightmare are the twin plastic insertion 'grabbers.' These are DEEP into the arm rest - just to the left and right of the pocket. Do not waste time or stress anywhere else. You'll end up breaking things. You need a strong, long, flat-bladed screwdriver to reach all the way across the arm rest. (It must be medium sized. The Really Big Drivers will break things.) These two gadgets are all that's holding it in place. Check out the video -- slow it down -- to spot where the magic happens. You'll be glad you did. (Plastic trim tools so often seen are too weak for this task.)
The easiest way do it : Remove the window rail by unscrew one bolt (located outside at side of the door) Then you can put your hand inside and use your finger to unclip + unhook the yellow plastic rod. And then remove the 3 bolts (including the lock bolts) from inside. Then door handle will come out effortlessly. Put the new handle in first. (without connecting anything) Then everything in reverse (Screw the bolts & connect the rods etc)
I wish you had shown us where the clips are on the back of the inner handle bezel instead of just putting it aside. I could not get any sense of where they were when you removed it. Also, to some extent, the arm rest.
What holds that hook in place on the lower end? I am doing this job but putting the new lock in has hit a wall. When I pulled the hook up to insert it into the new handle, it came all the way out. I can see a button like protrusion that the hook latches on at the lower end - the hook has a hole like that of a needle, only larger, by which it slides over the button. I am wondering whether it just slides there with nothing to hold it, or if something has dropped into the door panel.
+Kimland1Hi, my husband is having similar problem. Changing handles is easy enough, but key mechanism is the problem, in the way on one door, missing on the other, ordered replacement. If you figure anything out, please post.
I finally managed. i had to put that hook on the handle separately after i realized there was no way of holding it onto that little bump (the one i called a button) as i tried to maneuver the handle into place. Then I maneuvered the handle, hook-first, into the handle space. I had to walk over to the other door like 20 times to study the relative location of the hook and the line to the lock. In this video i am surprised i dont see the lock, yet mine could hardly move out of the way - it was the most cause of pain, and severally i was able to put the handle in, only to have the hook in the wrong position so it jammed over the lock line. its really difficult to recall what exactly i did to have the hook in the right position, but my guide was the other door. it turns out you should push the lock quite to the opposite of the direction that looks intuitive (but beware, your intuition might be different from mine). Once i had the handle in, with the hook in the correct side of the lock, it was fairly easy to slide the hook over the button from inside the car, navigating by feel.
In an afterthought, you probably can decode the positioning of the hook relative to the lock line by drawing a diagram from the other door. Once you are confident about the positioning the job will get a little easier.
did you ever get it fixed? i have been at it for hours and have the same problem and feel like I have to replace the whole door!! The drivers side is way harder!!
walk away from the job and give yourself a break!! The instructions that are given are for the passenger's door handle replacement!! It is different and somewhat more difficult. I had literally given up on the job after countless hours of attempting to make this work. My son came over and took a look at what I was attempting to do and had the handle on in a matter of 5 minutes!!! It is worth mentioning that I was trying to install the door handle that was for the passenger side, on the drivers side.... I had both door handles as replacements available to me and the whole time I was failing due to using the wrong handle!! This wouldn't have happened if I had not been so "frazzled" , and had walked away from it for a bit to think things out. Give yourself a break, and or have a fresh set of eyes look at what is going on.
Problem: I had a hard time with getting the new handle back into the door. The video does not show the steps. The key hole and window railing are back there preventing easy insertion. Too easy to lose the little white plastic clip and screws inside the door. Exact location of tabs on various door pieces need to be known to prevent breaking pieces which are more than likely brittle. Overall not an easy DIY. If the mechanic does it for $150 it is not too bad. The sliding door repair seems more accessible and easier.
I am in trouble with my van now, as I missed the fact that this was for the passenger side of the auto. The drivers side is a lot harder and I have broken the metal arm off from where it connects to a plastic piece that connects to a different arm that actually attaches to the door handle and have no idea what to do now!
Walter Mendez go to Amazon. I purchased all 4 for all door for $45 plus shipping total $50 something dollars. am gonna change all for cause I know if I leave the old ones they eventually gonna brake

Thank you for this post. I used it to replace my grandmother-in-laws door handle. Your guide was invaluable. Thank you for taking the time to post it.
Great video!!! You guys are my heroes. I watched it 3 times to understand it. I will be working on my car door handle tomorrow.
Now that it is warm, I finally got the car door handle fixed today. The video is very helpful. Thank you again.
Thanks! Followed all of your directions and completed the door handle replacement.
MrsShopper1234 that's awesome.
Ty!
Great video. You stopped me from breaking stuff.

Thanks, I just replaced same Door handle on 2000 Toyota sienna.👍🏻
Thanks for this great Video. It was very helpful to replace my Van's door handle. I had to struggle a bit to connect the cables and snap the new handle lock tab into the slot. But I watched your video again and was able to do it clean. Thanks again.
Thanks very much for such a clear, detailed and very helpful video. I just followed your instructions to replace my driver's handle. Very kind of you!
Thanks. FYI a hex-headed fastener with a machine screw thread is a 'bolt', not a 'screw'.
Great video. I would not have tried (and succeeded with) this replacement without this video.
Thanks
Great video just replaced my handle on 1999 sienna after watching did it in 40 mins Thank u . I subscribed and liked also thanks again
Working on my 2001 Sienna right now... 5 broken handles, 2 inside, 2 outside, 1 hatch...., Life truly is a bitch....

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you! Thank-you for taking the time to do this. Well done having someone else hold he camera!
Thanks guys awsome video

By the wrench used, I'm guessing all the bolts on the door handle take 10 mm wrenches/sockets?
Good video video except for getting thru the two hardest parts, and that is getting the lock back in and clipping down its rod.
thank you
Here is my experience. When you take the arm rest out, try to ply both ends. Plying the mid section could cause the foam cushion damaged.
the hook that I'm suppose to hook onto the outside door handle fell off whatever hinge it was now, i don't know where the put it back in
