DREADLOCKS REGRETS! WAX + MORE!

  • In this video I go through my top 10 biggest regrets from having young dreadlocks - the 10 biggest mistakes I made and have learned from throughout my dreadlocks process.
My Top 10 Young Dreadlocks Regrets:
    1) Wax - no surprises here, wax is going to top my list. Technically it did stop the knots from loosening.. but left me with club-like backcombed lumps that never softened and eventually all had to be cut off. Biggest regret.
    2) Wait on washing - I took the 'don't wash for a few weeks' too literally and wouldn't let any water (or rain touch my dreads).
    3) Soap residue - I had no idea what residue was and therefore paid no attention to all the soap building up in my young dreads.
    4) Young dreads stress - I used to stress out REALLY bad with my young dreads, so much so that I would get up 2 hours earlier than I would normally to straighten them neat every day! Unneeded stress and a waste of time.
    5) The no washing method - I used the no washing method for a fair while when my dreadlocks were young. I didn't use it because of the myth.. just because I didn't enjoy trying to wash waxy, residue'y dreads. Didn't take long for my head to get used to it and I'm certain someone in high school would have made fun of me if they smelled bad from not washing... the only thing I really noticed is that the roots and loose hairs really don't lock well when you don't wash your hair and it gets uncomfortable in the heat. Not exactly recommended.
    6) No poo method - A few years ago the 'no poo' method was all the rage on a different dreadlocks forum so I gave that a go. Pretty much the same results as the no washing method really apart from it did feel nicer to have some form of washing there. No horrible side effects, just not all that great for promoting locking. Again, not all that recommended.
    7) Palm rolling - Palm rolling in itself is not really a regret as nothing terrible comes of it... but in my case nothing really came of it at all, so I regret wasting hours and hours and hours doing it for no real reason.
    8) Root flipping - I thought I'd invented this myself, but obviously most people figure out root flipping at some point. Temporarily tightened the roots in question but then I was left with split roots for a few months after.
    9) Dread Rot - Dreads take a long time to dry... so why not let them dry while you sleep? right? I used to not own a hair dryer and I'd sleep with them wet and so all unpleasant things happen - dry your dreads!
    10) No documentation! I regret not taking many pictures of my young dreads. I took like... 0 because... well.. I kinda hated the wax, residue filled things, but looking back it would have been really useful to have the pictures for one to show what some of these regretful things do to the hair and also to show that if you leave them alone long enough you can fix most problems.
A couple of other regrets that didn't get into the video... because I forgot:
    11) Trimming loose hair - I used to try and trim my loose fringe hair because... well.. it was loose. Problem is, it grows back and then you're stuck with a silly, mini-fringe until it grows back out again.
    12) Grid sectioning - I had a rigid grid-type sectioning with no brick-lay overlap that didn't look all that pleasant with young dreads. After years of congo-ing it's no longer an issue, but it would have helped to start out with a more irregular pattern if I had my time again.
Ok so plenty of regrets there... but luckily I've learned from all of them. Have you made any dreadlocks mistakes? anything you wish you hadn't done? something you'd like to go back and change?

I decided as a breast cancer survivor to grow my hair out and dread it up. I have had my dreads for 3 years. I love your video. You made me laugh. The other thing is I was 57 years old when I put my dreads in. I am now 60. It so far has been quite the journey. I have had the most awful things said to me and also the nicest things said to me. It amazes me how a complete stranger can walk up and say to me "You are a disgrace to your people." I didn't know I had people. lol I am Native American. It's been a fun strange journey and sometimes I think about cutting them off. I get over it because it is spiritual for me. Breast cancer took my breasts and I have a lot of feelings tied up and knotted in my hair. I wish people would thinks twice before saying rude things to a stranger. I hope to see more videos from you in the future. :) As I said you made me laugh and at the same time I got it...

Random, wholesome and pretty sad at the same time.
I got my dreads like a month ago and people that were seeing me everyday suddenly didn't talk to me. Mostly cause they didn't recognize me. But i got all sorts of nicknames. From hedgehog to a spider to an urchin. There were many nice comments too. And they were more than the bad ones. It was getting annoying getting "bullied" for them.

People who are rude to you should remember locs belong to no single race. The celts had locs, so did the Vikings, the Sadhus in India have had locs for over 5,000 years, and in Tibet the Ngakpas have had locs for nearly as long as those Sadhus❗️ So wear you locs with pride, and ignore those who are rude to you, they are usually ignorant. Take care.

A lot of people a crazy crazy obsessed with not letting their dreadlocks mature, because they think the initial formation is the dreadlock and any looping/messiness is seriously wrong. So many people go crazy with crochet hooking and all kinds of stuff so much that their dreads are like rock hard lumps that just never mature into dreadlocks and just grow out, it's really bizarre.
I don't really have any regrets with mine!

My regret is starting them with backcomb & crochet hook. It was done by a professional September 2015. Since then, I have done nothing to them, aside from washing them once a week or so. I'm hoping as they get older & more mature, they will fill out & become more thick/fatter. I did watch your timeline when you first got them done & I see how yours are now, which is exactly how I'm hoping mine will turn out as the years go on. Just gotta maintain my patience. Love your channel. You've gained a new subscriber!

Thankfully I have known about you for a while previous to starting my dreads, I'm three months in and they are starting to get a little bit of character all ready. Was tempted by wax at the start but this video convinced me otherwise. I'm enjoying the process despite the days of 'Oh what have I done to my hair' freak-outs. Thank you for your helping hand, dude! Positive vibes your way.

I think it's hilarious how many horrible ideas you had when you got your dreads initially, but I give you props for keeping them and trying to make them better. :)
I think most people try to make them dread faster, thought it's impossible to, so no worries, we've all been there. And I thank you for all your advice in your videos, my dreads are wonderful and I love them ! :D

    My own regrets
1.) No research was done prior, was just doing a wannabe hairdresser a favour (she did a great job)
2.) I had no idea how to wash or dry them so they did stink and there's blue lint in them.
3.) I have never dealt with new growth and have no idea how to.
    4.) I waxed
It's been 5 years now, I'm very lucky they have survived but now I have the power of the internet to keep learning.
    Thank you for the information.

The only regret I really have is taking them out the first time. Started with dread head hq myself, the whole dread locking kit. I was sick of having to palm roll, use this (so I thought per lack of further research), do that and after just a few days, I took them out because of the maintainance and the itch was HORRIFIC! So my only regret is that I just didn't wait it out and work through it (this being my third time with dreads). Had them going on 4 mos now. Plan to keep em this time lol. I love them and just about everyone around me think they look good or just simply weird lol. Only one person has mentioned going back to normal hair and I laughed and told him that isn't happening :).....thanks for the vid Chris, u always get a cpl chuckles out of me and ur dreads are super awesome!

I'm pretty glad I got on a dreadlock video streak because I actually learned a lot despite not really wanting dreads. (And hearing negative comments in the past about them/people who wear them)
Such as, people say dreads are "dirty" (on anyone), when, clearly, their hair has been washed. (It would probably look oily to begin with but hair is different on everyone)
I like watching these videos, though. I love the transformations but I just couldn't do it. Honestly, I don't like brushing my hair everyday (it gets poofy and weird) but I'd have a hell of a time brushing it after a long period of time. (I'm a bit tender-headed but not as much as I used to be especially if I'm the one brushing it)
    Thanks for the info!

I decided to use the twist and rip method to get a more crochet look and twisted looking dreads. I did crochet a few times, but I'm not very good at it so I would rather not run the risk of damaging any hair. They're just so loopy in a lot of them. Most of them at this point are starting to get felty or hard and they're coming along really well.

One thing I sort of regret NOT doing that I would do and suggest to others if using the back combing method. I had clear silicon rubber bands on the ends of all my dreads, but not loosely at the roots, so when I washed the first time at about 10 days, the dreads all kind of slid down themselves and exposed about two inches of undreaded hair and dangled there. Loose rubberbands that slide up and down a bit seem to actually HELP the locking process because loose hair from adjacent gets caught and tangles faster, for me at least. I have very straight, somewhat oily hair, and the dread seems to sort of swallow these and then a few months later, they break and stick out and are easy to pull out, or they simply get swallowed whole. Also, I am a dark blonde (getting a bit grey now) so the clear silicon didn't really show at all. I would use them at the root, but not at the end.

when I did my first set of dreads I did the backcombing and wax thing and I knew not to use too much but I also had no idea how big they were going to be or that wax did not help the locking process at all.I looked like a white girl bob marley which isn't entirely bad I just don't think that look was for me. I had them in for about a month until I got too frustrated with how I looked and not liking the way it was so I took them out and I am now on my second set of dreads and decided to do the twist n rip + back comb and I already notice a difference of how they look and their sizes are more to my taste. I was in such a rush before to have them perfect and now I understand its just a process of trial and error and hopefully these will grow beautifully and not disappoint. :) great video btw I can really relate to alot of your regrets.

I put dax hair wax in them to curb the frizzy on top of my head an straigten them out. That coupled with pulling them through the root loops and sticking latex glue into them (don't ask I don't even remember why I did this.) made them unlikely to ever properly form. I also ended up getting an under cut because the carpet forming at my neck was a constant battle. I also regret getting a hairdresser to start them, she hurt my head and they were propper loose. Still it made me famous among my peers for a while since they used my photo to advertise their dread service.

I think your hilarious. It's great how you had to patch together the video because of rambling. Haha. And I appreciate the regrets. I learned a few of these the hard way. I just started mine about 3 months ago. Know any information on dying them?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 лет назад

vforveronyka Dying them can be time consuming... and slightly costly. The dye has to be painted onto the exterior of the dreadlocks - you'll find this can take quite a while and use quite a lot of dye. You however need to be somewhat careful with how much you apply because you will need to rinse out all the excess afterwards... the more you apply, the more you have to rinse out... and if you don't rinse out all the excess then the dreadlocks can sort of 'bleed' left over dye every time you wash them. The rinsing can take a real long time.

My first set of dreads I did the dreadlock hq thing. Ended up having patches in my dreads where the wax built up and it didn't lock, the rubber bands on the roots... Well those wouldn't come out and I ended up cutting some out which led to cutting hair which leaves little chunks of hair that stuck out if my head all short lol. The final draw that made me just shave my head completely was the wax in my dreads accumulated so much lint that it just looked like a bunch of moldy sausages in my head! This time I have learned and they really are doing well :) magic from past misery!

Not only did the hair dressers fail to fix the new growth problem I was having, they separated the dreads by cutting in between them which made their roots incredibly thin. I keep expecting them to fall off. And now I've got a weird dreadlock mullet happening with all the short hair on top. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Greatly greatly appreciated.

im at 4 and a half years and use wax 3 or 4 times a year, overwaxing leaves you feeling gross, but it does help with those frizzy hairs and such.

Been there, done that tried that + synthetic extensions on my new dreads. That synthetic hair got really smelly at times :O
I'm sooooo glad it's long gone by now,
Now about 8 years later. Summing up the experience...patience is really all you need to get pretty self maintaining natural dreads.
Mine was backcomed and moderately waxed by a hairdresser from Togo West Africa.
I went through most of the same mistakes as you.
Now they're just part of me but the first years was kind of a stressful struggle ;)

I went to a lady to get mine done, she back combed VERY few, and mostly just twisted them and used wax&gel. They only took about an hour and a half, and looked pretty good... But she said not to wash them for a few months and to keep twisting them and be really careful.
The next day I started thinking "this isn't right, she didn't do them right" because I wasn't going to be "oh so fragile" with DREADS!!!
So we spent 5 hours on the twist and rip and back combing the next day. Well the day after they ALL came undone for the most part because the wax was still in....
So we're sitting here now after I washed my hair out completely back combing... I've got a little shorter than shoulder length hair and it's been a good 5+ hours and we're MAYBE half way done doing it right for the final time.
No wax, that is the moral of the story.

wow, wish I would have watched this video 1st. I know I have at least half of those u listed, especially going to the salon & they put wax on mine & I just got them 5 days ago...mine are small, well some small in the back , a little bigger further up, I think they are kinda assorted & I left a little hair undreaded in the front on the right side & the left side is shaved a little (only way I can explain, I told her I wanted them to not look so professional & perfect)...My question was going to be basically the same as the young lady who posted before me so im gonna just keep watchin yr videos, thanks for all the info! :)

First of all, great video! Let's just put it all out there.
My third last set (natural) was the one I actually got right, but the two prior attempts (attempts being the operative word) I got so many things wrong: excessive maintenance felting/crochet, impatience and worry, wax, I even used super glue at one point... So Dumb!
Been toying with twist/pull some as my hair grows back out, but then I keep combing them back out after a few weeks as my hair is still short. At this point I kinda like the messy in between stage, so I'm not sure if I will grow locks or just long hair.

First regret, but not real regret: My dreads were done with a felting needle. The dreads turned out pretty nice and they do not break oder anything like this but I guess my hair would look really stupid if I would decide to brush them out - I'll not eighter way so I do not care that much.
Second regret: In the beginning I also pulled the dread through the root. I stoped when I recognized that this is caused strange knots. For now I sometimes just do a little tight'n'roots and if a dread looks really bad a little crocheting. Everything else the hair is just doing by itself.

My dreadlocks regret; I wanted dreadlocks really bad but I was too scared to do them myself. I did all the research on how to make them, how to wash them, what to do what not to do. But I couldn't do them myself for fear of messing them up. Well, I decided to go to a salon to get it done. So I go to the salon and they lady doing my hair has only ever done dreads one other time. So not only did she use an ungodly amount of wax, she didn't backcomb well and when she was done waxxing the crap out of it she put me under the hair drier........... it took me forever to get the wax out. And when I brushed my dreads out so I can start over 4 months later it still had wax in it.

i use dr bronners, i love his message, writings on his bottles, that the people who get the organic materials are for sure payed, and that it has hemp oil in it, i am a advocate for putting hemp oil and cannabis oil on the skin, and ingesting them. also that it has yummy smells, eucalyptus, lavendar, orange, lemon, also i am going to make sole, or himalyain pink salt soaked in water as a spray, maybe with some lemon and tumeric, to dye my hair, but the sole, since it is really healthy, maybe add some sea salt as well.
i recommend to be honest when you get abused, and have someone to be with, a friend.

Hey man. Been watchn ur vids for some time now. Good stuff, keep up. Anyway, i have come to realize that i may have messed up my process of dreadn my hair. Last August (7 months ago) I did the twist n tear method and things were looking good, so I had extensions put in. Mind u that my hair was shoulder lenght when i began this process. I had 10 in extensions put in. Well, this was not a good decision cause when my hair started to go through the shrink process, i got some massive loops, bumps, etc and i dont think that they will ever smooth out. My natural hair is locked up good, except some loosening of the roots which will eventually tighten up. What i was wondering, in your opinion, would it be better to cut the extensions off and let my real hair fully mature or just leave well enough alone and it will all work out in the end? Thanks for your vids and insight.

I regret doing backcomb dreads about 1 1/2 years ago because I really wanted dreads and I was young and stupid, my girlfriend did it to me with just a needle, the process was painful, after 3 fuckinh days it was over , after a month with the dreads and treating them without knowing what I'm doing, without washing, without any good maintenance, I decided I want them off, another long process... Back to my natural hair, then I started to research The he'll out of dreads
And decided to go for neglect method,it's need about 10 months since then and I couldn't be more happy 😁

Ive been listening to your advice from day 1 of my dreadlock journey. It's been about 16 months, and the one thing I've regretted the most is your #1
I gave myself a "hair cut" about a month ago, and all of the dreads had waxy cores from the 3 times I waxed during the first 4 months or so. Gross! Some of the dreads were worse than the others; especially, my least favorite ones. I doubt there is any solution besides just waiting, but if you got any, please let me know.
My next regret would be wasting all my precious time, worrying about the appearance of my locks. I did indeed take a lot of flack from my peers during the first 6 months or so, but when I hit month 10, I could finally say I somewhat had dreadlocks, and people began to compliment my effort. .
My biggest "non-regret" was not paying a couple hundred bucks to a hippie with a crochet needle to "fix" my dreads. I got close a couple times, but now Im at the point where I dont want anyone destroying all the lovely progress my locks have made.
My only question is that Ive noticed from your videos that the amount of long loose hairs sprouting from the top of your head seemed to have mostly disappeared. What happened to those hairs?
I actually like a lot my loose hair but could do without some of it
    Cheers,
    Addy
Oh! Another regret: tying my ends to facilitate a blunting effect. It did not work...

I have had my dreads for about 6 months now and have been waxing nearly every night when I palm roll. Are you suggesting not to palm roll at all? Do you use anything instead of wax? I really love the look of your dreads! Also, my dreads are sectioned at the scalp and I HATE it! How do I make this go away? I initially got my dreads in Uganda and that’s how they did them, and now that I am back, the salon I got to tightens them the same way by doing the looping through method. Also, how do you wash your dreads? I have been told to just wash the scalp and then let the soapy water run over the dreads and just squeeze them like ringing out a cloth. Is this what you recommend? Thank you.

  • @CrimsonDisarray

I have wanted dreadlocks for years and I've been doing some research on RUclips and the like. Do you recommend having someone tease/twist them or doing it naturally by not brushing/letting them go :/ Very curious, I've seen it done both ways with both good and bad results depending on the aftercare. And are the first few days very difficult? Can't wait to hear back.

    • @waterywanderer620
      @waterywanderer620 8 лет назад

+CrimsonDisarraythe freeform method *not brushing* can have unpredictable results and takes alot of separating but alot of people love watching them form. the twist and rip method and back-combing method are no better or worse than free form they just have different results. freeform are generally more "wild". if you decide on twist and rip or back-combing method make sure to section. also the first couple days for me were only difficult in the scalp department, they made me itchy.

Hey Lazy dreads, ive had mine for 9 years recently hadn't had them maintained for 2-3 yrs. After 4 years i started to trim them every half year. I went to a salon and they root flipped a lot of my dreads (2-4 flips in different directions per dread). Alas, i think it was not the way forward, they are not tight, but are beginning to split at the roots in to two dreads - Have you any tips? Just let them be? I have done a little crochet in the past, but mostly I just twist my dreads. Cheers.

I live in a sort of small town, but my mother says that I should go to a Salon and get it done if I'm going to do it. The only places nearby don't specifically advertise dreads which worries me a bit. I got a pixie cut a few months ago from a hair dresser that I really love but I'm afraid she'll laugh in my face if I ask her about dreads. I do want to wait until my hair gets about to my chest before I start, and right now it's barely to my shoulders, so I have plenty of time to wait for a good Salon to enter my life. I just want to not have to drive terribly far and my mother really doesn't want me to do them myself. I live in Southern Illinois if anyone wants to give me suggestions!:p

I just got one question though. I read a blog that says to use a wool shirt/hat and rub your hair with it for 15 minutes, separate the hair as you want, then do it again. Would something like that work? I did it with a wool shirt and my hair is definitely messier and starting to knot up.
