I hope he does know how important he is?a friend of mine has a condition where he just couldn't communicate or mix with others at school so he took up the guitar and learnt via Martys lessons and he's now not only a great guitar player but he's more confidence to talk to people.
Marty’s best skill in his teachings, for me, is I never feel like he is talking down to me, juts explaining and encouraging. I like that. He’s definitely an optimist for what he can do for us amateurs just wanting to play some new songs and get better. I find that his encouragement opens the door for more creativity.
Marty is the reason I play guitar as well as I do. I don't know how far I would have gotten musically without his videos early on in my journey. I mean, I was always ambitious, but learning guitar completely on my own would have been rather difficult. I appreciate the heck out of Marty Schwartz.
Marty is an ABSOLUTE MASTER at teaching how to play guitar. I’ve been watching him for years...and he breaks down the complex into usable and memorable small parts. PROGRESS IS INEVITABLE...with Marty Schwartz!!!
Been a student of Marty's pretty much the entire 10 years he's been teaching online, and honestly just came across Mary from Marty's livestream and am completely diggin her style/personality/channel as well! Mary you've gained a fan!
My two most favorite people on video! "On the couch!" Having a rap, jam, sesh! Best [by far] Tuesday Talks! You play well together! Hey, you play well separate but together having a jam is so cool!
0:51 "We're on the same couch" "I know, its a legendary couch" Curse my stupid brain for the involuntarily connecting this to something.. inappropriate LOL
Much respect to you Mary. You could easily just say that you already are at a certain level of playing and not worry about trying something new. You are using the plectrum.... granted more work is needed, but you are open to new methods. I am new to your channel and am glad I have found your video world. Cheers my friend!
Mary is a beautiful human all around. Marty is a beautiful person in his own way. I have been a Marty fan for years. I recently discovered Mary seperately. I was drawn to each of them instantly. Thanks for getting together for this session.
My favorite pick-in-guitar moment is that picture of John Lennon when the Beatles were in India, holding his guitar over his head upside down and looking in the soundhole. I figure that just means losing your pick in your guitar puts you in good company.
Marty is a legend on You Tube, I’ve learnt so much from him. It’s so nice to see how much you both admire each other. Your videos Mary are now up there with the best. Good luck in all you do.
This video is not just great for its educational value, it's just heart-warming to see these two great guys together, on the same couch, talking shop and being super nice people. Love you guys.
It is really cool how you two and Rick Beato, and others, have found a way to make a living with music without having to subjugate to the soul-sucking music industry and you are helping to save the medium and inspire young musicians. For me, your engaging personalities and love of music is just so much fun, I am going to pick up my guitar and just play, like right now. Interesting thoughts on gripping the pick. I’m going to try the three finger idea. Thank you both!
I have followed a lot of tutorials of Marty’s! I have learned several songs and a whole lot of techniques and fundamentals! He is an awesome guitarist and a very good teacher, very easy to follow! I’ve always learned something new and enjoyed the lesson! Your so lucky! Awesome, Rock on Marty! Thanks for the upload Mary!
You guys sound so good together. Marty was one of the first you tubers I binge watched for guitar lessons. And I've watched you A lot lately. Seeing you 2 together and jamming so naturally, is just awesome. Love the sound you guys were creating.
I had stop playing guitar for a while (decide to play other instruments, guitar is just not for me) but when I started playing this dude help me a lot when I first trying to learn how to play guitar. I learned a lot from him. He is the OG of youtube guitar lesson video.
These are two great guitar teachers that have awesome personalities that all can learn to play from. It’s cool to sit in and see them trade off guitar techniques.
The ending was so heart warming! I remember the first video I saw of Marty was like in 2012!! Haha or maybe 13. Marty you will for ever be my guitar teacher 😌🙏
Being that I'm missing the tip of my index finger it's nice to see these two discussing the little nuances to holding picks and finger picking. It gives me a few ideas on what to try next
Beautiful work guys, that intro gave me goosebumps for real, learning from your site and videos for 8 months now and so grateful for all your work out here marty @
Marty is the One Guy Who Opened the Pantatonic scale up for me man. Love this guy. 7 years later I’m becoming more and more of the beast i was destined to be on Guitar 🎸 haha
Always amazed as Mary's ability to network in the RUclipsverse. She pretty much has done crossovers with every established guitar youtuber out there. Marty is the best.
I have worked through a lot of Marty’s videos. I have worked through a lot of Tony Polecastro’s finger picking and flat picking warm ups and songs. I have had shred lessons with Mrs. Smith - which then took my guitar journey to a whole new level... Because I love both styles, I am trying to learn Hybrid picking, now. Hybrid picking gives me most of what I can do in finger picking PLUS everything I can do/learn with flat picking (and economy picking, 3 notes per string, etc).
"To get better at something, you have to not avoid it." I'm going to keep that in mind. I'm very much to Mary's side: I naturally gravitate to fingerpicking. Still, I try to at least pick up a plectrum every day, so it doesn't become this crazy, weird, uncomfortable thing that I never do.
I've been playing guitar using my index finger nail for 40 yrs now. It feels so unnatural to play with a pick, but I want to start using a pick, especially for alternate/hybrid picking. I think my reason for not using a pick was to keep a low volume on my strumming as I practiced. It's great to see you both together. Great info.
two of my favorite guitarists - Martay ! and the ever so lovely and talented Mary ! Mary, you helped me play that clean , extra sustain and reverb style. Marty helped me learn so many songs. I played along with Mary so many times, these callouses are a testament to my determination. Thanks you two ! love ya.
So fun to see marty here, i have been playing guitar since i was 13 and i am now 22 years old! The first videos i used to watch were marty's because they were so easy to understand! Thank you for all these years of learning some songs from you!
I like how Mary is so humble, as she often says that she can't shred, and can't tap, whereas, in this case, you can't use a pick when I remember vividly she's not Steve Vai shredding, but her licks aren't exactly slow. And, I remember when she was trying out Rory's relic-based guitar she was mimicking the taps, but she was spot on. Oh, and hey dear, you played a Mastodon riff - I'm a metal lover, however, haven't the chops for metal. I'm a rocky blues player similar to yourself only that I like to play rhythm with my fingers, but leads are with a pick. I dig the humility. This coming from a rocky-blues/ambient rock play that taps at times, but not often. Keep it up.
Am a new subscriber since watching you on Marty live last week, and I gotta say you both are phenomenal guitar players and two of the “Coolest” people on planet earth.. Thanks for sharing your talents!
Sympathize with Mary on this one. I learned to play and never used a pick. Having a very difficult time trying to adjust and play with a pick. Its tough to change everything you know. Mary, you are great weather you use a pick or not, don't sweat it!!
Great to see two of my favorites together! For the life of me, I cant use a pick, I use the back of my index fingernail. I keep trying picks and fingerpicking, maybe some day. I've only played 3 years.
I see Andy McKee out and about every once in a while since we live in the same town. Though I've never went and talked to him since he has been with his wife and son every time I've ran into him.
I love fingerpicking. I tried to do the pluck-trum pick many times over the many years. But fingers is it for me.. I am more of a strummer anyways and i do not do much solo picking so the fingers work for me. Yea I can always work on getting better and work on weaknesses and so on. But for what I do I am finger style and can put the thumb and finger picks if I needed to do so. Or maybe just the thumb pick. I was taught by my dad when i was little and he played mostly acoustic guitar and ukulele but he had a electric too. i inherited all of his musical stuff when he passed asway. Playing with my fingers is so organic for me. No losing your pick or having to buy a pick. With the fingers you are ready to go right away.
Marty has helped me a lot. I wish I had a fraction of his mastery you have also helped me Mary I bounce because all of you from time to time show the thing I'm searching for but don't know what it is. Thank you both.
Glad the pick drop was kept in. It shows even those we look up to are human and not infallible. It rather encourages me to continue knowing that even the great players make mistakes.
Big thank you to you both. Marty, you cleared up what I thought was a big inadequacy when it comes to using a pick. After a long time of trying to hold it between my finger and thumb, I managed to be able to do this for single line playing after a long time of struggling but still had to grip it the way you showed to strum which I thought was I hindrance. There was an added extra in the mix as well because I'm naturally left-handed but learned to play right-handed subconsciously. so thank you so much for that. I'm also a finger-style player so thanks to Mary for all your knowledge. Great video
This is awesome. I'm a budding guitar teacher myself, and I always struggle to explain strumming patterns to new students. The light pick idea is a concept I didn't even think about because I hate light picks.
Haven't gotten to the end of the vid yet .. but I hope they cover hybrid picking, where you use a plectrum to pick but still use your free fingers to do arpeggios etc. Then you have the volume as well as the versatility. To me, the correct answer to this plectrum or finger argument is you can do BOTH at the same time. Most things in life aren't actually either/or. Loved this video and appreciate the heck out of both of you.
I started out using a pick in 1963 , shortly after I included finger picking. I like both. Then since I could still basically do both what I did was use a flat pick and my fingers which over time became my thumb against the index the top of the index nail becomes the pick.
@ 12:50 credit where credit is due... This beat, this rhythm, I love, Have loved since 1970. It makes me wanna tap my feet-- makes me wanna holler & throw up both my hands ...that's right: Marvin Gaye, who IMHO invented it (maybe with whoever he wuz jamming with at the time) Thanx Mary, and Marty for a great vid and... cheers
Great to see two of my favourite Tubers working together to defeat the copyright trolls trying to stifle the creativity out of the industry. Don't let them push you off air Marty !
This was a great video, guys! Thanks for tackling some overlooked fundamentals. I've played acoustic for years, without a pick, but now I'm playing electric and I find the style that works with the band I play with needs both finger picking and "pick" songs. I've been struggling with going back to using a pick, as well as playing electric, which I've done only in passing. This video made me ponder some of my own techniques, so thanks again!
Thanks for sharing! You both are awesome musicians. One note about picks/plectrums-as with anything, I found trying a bunch of them revealed what I liked, there are sooooo many to choose from! Guys like EVH and Paul Gilbert use really thin picks whereas there are guys Billy Gibbons, Brian May, etc. prefer very heavy ones-thin Brian May uses a pence!
Fun video. Marty is one of my favorites and it was great to watch you be a little uncomfortable trying out rhythm with the pick and how that can affect other things you’ve previously mastered.

"If you want to get better at something, you have to stop avoiding it."-Marty Schwartz.
@Peter Martins Yea, Marty is the real deal, who also teaches. They sounded great together, kind of smooth jazz feel.
Wow! Marty is a real genuine person. I always thought he was a robot sent from the future to save guitar.
I hope he does know how important he is?a friend of mine has a condition where he just couldn't communicate or mix with others at school so he took up the guitar and learnt via Martys lessons and he's now not only a great guitar player but he's more confidence to talk to people.

I love the fact that Ms. Spender doesn't mind learning new things its very sweet to see the gleam in her eyes as she learning something new!

THE BEST GUITAR TEACHER EVER. Started me on guitar, will never stop, cannot thank you enough, Marty! You are a legend!!!

Dude I learned so much from this guy when I first started playing guitar by watching his videos awesome Tuesdays talks as always
Marty is the best teacher on I've ever had. 1 year in know many songs all thanks to this man.

I like Mary's suggestion to learn songs all the way through, best tip ever.
Mary and Marty, could it get much better!? Love seeing the two styles come together and share advice!
Yes, it could. Add Justin Sanderco and you have the RUclips trifecta.
Oh man the nostalgia of learning so many songs from Marty’s videos when I was younger. Even my dad started learning tunes from his videos!
This is probably the best collab I could of never expected, I love Marty so much
Marty is the reason i can play many solo's now and helped me up my progress by alot! Love this guy!
Marty is a legend on You Tube, I’ve learnt so much from him. It’s so nice to see how much you both admire each other. Your videos Mary are now up there with the best. Good luck in all you do.
It's weird to see the left side of Marty Schwartz
Mary: *asks for a guitar lesson*
Also Mary: *watches Marty play riff for 10 seconds and then immediately plays it perfectly **3:36*
Thank you I was looking for that time stamp I accidentally rewired and I couldn't find it

Beautiful work guys, that intro gave me goosebumps for real, learning from your site and videos for 8 months now and so grateful for all your work out here marty @
Marty has helped a lot in my slow but steady journey to learn guitar. A true inspiration.
Marty n Justin are the best guitar teacherse on earth...

My step by step guitar instructor Marty. You have done good deeds for guitar players of all ages homie!!!!
Found Marty 10 years ago , found you today. RUclips is a pretty cool thing
This is really fun! Thanks Mary and Marty. So fun to see you both together.
She mentioned Mike Daws. Cool.
Thank you Mary for being amazing!! I've been following Marty's RUclips journey for about 10 years, and really happy to be following you now!!!

Getty Mary Spender on your Tuesday Talks... Marty you are the best I am so happy for your success you have taught the internet how to play guitar.
Ah me 2 index finger plectrum
Unique sound though 😉a think anyway😎🎸
im in my late 20s. I watched Marty when I was like 13 or 12, the man hasn't aged a day! thanks for the Beatles lessons mart!
I see Andy McKee out and about every once in a while since we live in the same town. Though I've never went and talked to him since he has been with his wife and son every time I've ran into him.
I love fingerpicking. I tried to do the pluck-trum pick many times over the many years. But fingers is it for me.. love marty's reaction when you change the rhythm part lol
I recommend a small pick like a Jazz III, the standard size pick is way too big and gets in the way of pinch harmonics (for me anyway).
Marty has helped me a lot. I wish I had a fraction of his mastery you have also helped me Mary I bounce because all of you from time to time show the thing I'm searching for but don't know what it is. Thank you both.
“Think about your weaknesses”. My weakness is playing guitar :v
It's like when people ask your weakness in golf.... ohh... just using my clubs. Any of'em :)
Then you should play guitar.
Your weakness is being corrupt by the system pope.
My weakness. Failure to practice.
Marty: start with a super light pick.
Me: *casually puts down my big stubby*
Yup with ye there bro ...thought 1 size & that was that 😂🤔
I realized this a while back on my own and it was a game changer!
@@jeffkuhn6003 Good stuff mate, happy strummin 😎👌🎸
I just keep my Big Stubby and loosen my grip on it ever so slightly. Love the big stubby!
Glad the pick drop was kept in. It shows even those we look up to are human and not infallible. It rather encourages me to continue knowing that even the great players make mistakes.
Still stoked that you played Primrose on the stream! You're the best!
it's refreshing to see that even legends drop a pick in the
sound hole hahahhaha
Man...been playing for 12 years and one of my first lessons were from Marty on youtube he was the reason i quit my overly expensive guitar teacher
Marty Schwartz is the Internets guitar teacher, everyone knows him
The live jam!!! This is a wonderful moment in my life!!!
OMG!!!! This was sick. I've been watching Marty for a while and just got up on Mary. Loving you too jamming together.
Marty is legit the man. Such a top bloke.
I’ve always played using a pick for many years and never said the word plectrum. Love hearing you say that.
Most things in life aren't actually either/or. makes me wanna holler & throw up both my hands ...that's right: Marvin Gaye, who
IMHO invented it (maybe with whoever he wuz jamming with at the time)
Thanx Mary, and Marty for a great vid and...
cheers
Great to see two of my favourite Tubers working together to defeat the copyright trolls trying to stifle the creativity out of the industry. Don't let them push you off air Marty !
Marty is a treasure. Has taught me many songs
Cool to see you 2 vibing.... loved Marty’s energy and enthusiasm 💪🏼🤟🏼
Love having coffee while listening to your jam..
Marty was brilliant. Great listening to you both.
I missed, the Marty party though I followed Mary for some time now THIS WAS SO AWESOME 😎...!!
Thanks for sharing! You both are awesome musicians. One note about picks/plectrums-as with anything, I found trying a bunch of them revealed what I liked, there are sooooo many to choose from! Fun video. Marty is one of my favorites and it was great to watch you be a little uncomfortable trying out rhythm with the pick and how that can affect other things you’ve previously mastered.
Just what I needed, Mary, I've played years but never used a pic - I will now; I'm in good company xx
Marty is a hero, I’ve learned so much from watching your videos, thanks
He is the best, the only reason to watch RUclips
Two genuinely beautiful people, and their guitars, what more could we want? :)
That duo jam at 17:30 was amazing.
song name?
Very Pleasant in every Possible Way.........Thank you Both.
How nice marty's playing! Knew him for ages but never had a chance to ear him jam!
