I love how Norm, in all his greatness, took a professionally painful time in Conan's life, and managed to turn it into something hilarious that made Conan laugh.
Conan always laughs the hardest at the most savage burns he gets about himself. He has no ego, and is the opposite of most talk show hosts, which is why he is the best there is. Conan is what Ellen PRETENDS to be in real life.
He came to fruition at the Harvard lampoon after 3 years of being a peasant for the institution then became the editor. He was around funny all the time and knows the patterns inside and out so he doesn't get offended but just appreciates when someone surprises him.
Conan is a master of conversation flow. He knows his guests. If they’re funny, telling good stories he lets them go. If he see’s them struggling he interjects. If a guest tells a joke and Conan sees the opportunity he’ll add to it but he’ll let them finish the joke. This a very underrated skill. Guys like Fallon, Colbert, and Kimmel are not even in his league.

It's actually pretty hilarious. Other than that one time, though, his laugh always seems fake even if it's not, and he's not a very good interviewer, either.

He is by far the best all around comedian as well. He always keeps coming up with new ideas like remotes and without borders, which is why he is still watched by young people nowadays after being a late night host for 27 years. That's quite an accomplishment.
Conan adored Norm MacDonald. Truly adored him. When he spoke of how he sets up his jokes ect it was so wholesome & gave great insight into Norms extreme intelligence, spontaneity & pure heart.
Watch Cruise's interviews with BBC Radio 1's Ali Plumb. His awful "religious" inclinations notwithstanding, Cruise is not a bad interviewee with the right host.

Smoove J As a fellow Aussie I feel I need to chime in here and point out that's Claudia O'Doherty, a very funny comedian in her own right and daughter of one of the members of legendary Australian band Mental As Anything.
During the majority of the episode where Norm brings Conan a gift basket, it was somewhat apparent that Conan was nervous. He was in a very awkward position and simultaneously letting go of a lifelong dream. Norm was aware that Conan would be having a difficult time that night so he came up with something that would ease some tension and lift his spirit. Clearly Conan deeply appreciated this gesture, Norm seems like a genuinely great person and I'm glad we get to appreciate it.
Other comedians say he’s the funniest guy in the room in a room full of comics. He’s just so politically incorrect, he doesn’t get a lot of mainstream love.
