Lee-Enfield were the original designers. I am old enough to remember when it was being developed, but am American. Sad part to me is how precipitous the decline of UK gunsmithing has become, according to Forgotten Weapons, that HK had to come and do all those retrofits.

It's not so much about "being good with the weapon" as much as learning how manuals of arms in the west and what used to be known as combloc are vastly different. For example the "cool high speed way" of running the charging handle on an AK by going underneath with the thumb of the support hand is just not something that used to be done in the west. It is an interesting topic.

People assumed AK's were cheap because they came over here as kits or were made in countries where the dollar was stronger. Before PSA started making AK's the better AK's made in the US were made by Rifle Dynamics, Krebbs, or Tromix. They were pricey. The difference in prices was due to the labor costs vs Eastern European makers. The early cheap AK's made by Century were made of lesser materials and were junk.

Hell, the follow-up to the AR-15, the AR-18 was mostly made and used by other countries, like the Japanese, the brits with the SA-80, the Koreans with their Daewoo rifles, the Czechs with the new bren, etc.

In terms of AK, it really depends on the manufacturer. Personally, Zastava makes a decent AK. So does Kalashnikov USA. Those are going to be on the pricier end. But stay away from Century Arms AKs. As they tend to be parts bin rifles, and are not very reliable. I'm looking into getting an AK myself, unfortunately, my guys at my local shop aren't too knowledgeable about them. Cause as they put it "Why do I want to use a Commie rifle" Hope this helps.

Those AKs you were looking at were probably cheap century arms examples. If you want a good AK in the US, you're paying $1,500 at least (if you get a KUSA ak 100 series rifle). PSA also makes clones but in truth they're kind of garbage. The guys who want the more correct and well-made stuff usually get Bulgarian or Romanian parts kits or fully assembled rifles. Years ago people used to buy the imported saiga rifles which came from Russia in a sporterized configuration, you could get them cheap back then but now they're almost impossible to get and even if you do they're easily 3 grand up. Same goes for those arsenal ak's from bulgaria. I think the best deal for the money for AKs in the US would be Zastava (m70, m90, m85 etc). Those yugo (serbian specifically) AKs are pretty well made and cost about the same as KUSA products. I think some people even get the Polish NATO AKs chambered in 556, those seem pretty well made also. I have no idea how hard it is to get those but they're probably also very expensive. Klayco47 is another great guntube channel you could react to or watch on your own, he's basically AK jesus. Garand thumb has done several videos on PSA AK 100 series clones like their 103 (7.62×39) and their ak-74 (5.45)

You can have the most elite special forces units in the world, and if they get hit with a missile on the transport... it doesn't really matter does it? From my understanding, VDV and ALFA suffered horrendous losses early on in the war from western weapons, and that led to a heavy reliance on Wagner group. It's also my understanding that their entire NCO component was pretty much obliterated, making training and replacement much more difficult.

It is only as we get older and further from the hardships we faced early in life that we develop a fondness for them. Maybe it takes us a while to realize that dealing with those hardships gave us ability to deal with all of lifes more modest problems. Getting wet isn't going to kill you. Carrying a lot of weight isn't going to kill you. Being tired is just part of life. However, carrying 50 lbs. in the rain while you are tired and then some guy starts shooting at you just might actually kill you.

Aks are kinda expensive in the us in comparison to ar’s, mostly because of how much more complicated individual AK parts are to make vs ARs. Like as in you can take a chunk o-steel and finish said part in one setup, where as aks require a forging and then multiple setups

If you insist we would be ok with a Red coat and white pants. Then I guess you would need somebody to keep your rifle when you go back home.
