Just picked up my first bottle of Kentucky Spirit. The honey sweetness my bottle provided rivaled that of the Blanton's I just got done with. Now I need more Blanton's to A-B compare. I didn't find the KS too thin at all. It's definitely worth 3x WT 101!
KY Spirits do vary from barrel to barrel as well. I've got a particular bottle on the shelf that Im not touching again for a long time because it's so good and I don't want to lose it. I've had some that are just ok and kill with a few weeks. But overall, I'll buy a KY Spirits whenever I see one as long as it's reasonably priced.
I just picked up a bottle of Kentucky Spirit at the distillery a couple weeks ago. Jimmy Russell was there signing bottles which is why I bought it. I think it is very good and not thin at all.
I'm a big fan of the channel! As an limited experiment: I would like to see a "triple blind" assessment... In addition to a double-blind tasting like you normally do, I'd be interested to see/hear each of you give your notes completely independently before you come together to give your scores. i.e. Josh goes through the tasting on camera without Erin, and separately, Erin goes through the tasting on camera without Josh. Then you both come together to talk about the comparison of your independent notes before the scores and pours are revealed. The reason I'm curious is because each of you occasionally says something that then influences the notes and impressions of the other. While I admit the standard format is all part of the charisma of the channel (and even though Erin isn't a "whiskey nerd"), I think it would be really interesting to see you both go through the full tasting process solo and give your totally thoughts in real-time. Either way, thanks for the great content!
I get the Kentucky Spirit for $51 in TX (with military discount). I REALLY like the taste of it and bought another bottle the next day. I find 101 to be just OK. To each their own... I'm tempted to buy another.
A Lot of the times when you FIRST have a neat with some viscosity, another pour can far fall short, so sometimes if you can get around that is not that different.
I liked my first bottle of Kentucky Spirit over WT101, and I think it was just under $50. But I have been seeing them lately at $75, except they are Total Wine store picks from the Camp Nelson Rickhouse, and I wanted to get one to compare to the others. BIG DIFFERENCE to me on the flavor--a real cinnamon bomb and waaaay more caramel. Considering how a RR Private Barrel is about the same price at a higher proof, it does seem overpriced, but I think I lucked out. Now I have something with all the great flavors I love but at a lower proof point. That pricing though...
The K. Spirits I have had have been great. I noticed your thumbnail shows the old label (from what I know) of the K. Spirit. Wonder if there is a difference between the old label’s version and the new ones. Anyway great vid. Looking forward to the pick releases.
Probably just as much single barrel variance as the variance between the old and new label. There’s a LOT of variance between single barrels, much less single barrels over time.
If this is an off the shelf KS, I agree. I feel like they try to appease to the masses with its flavor profile. But if you can land some of the visitor center picks, they can be absolutely incredible, punching higher than their cost.
Wild Turkey 101 for me is a go to neat. Also for the KS price....I can also picked up a bottle of Early Times 100 BIB and a Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight for a couple extra bucks., Nice Vid.👍
It's probably true that Kentucky Spirit isn't worth the premium on regular 101. That being said, I've had an off the shelf KS (not a store pick) that tasted like the Wild Turkey Traditions 14 year (the one that came out in 2009). All the ones I've had were good, and I don't think I'd prefer regular 101 over any of them. I guess I'm willing to pay the premium on the lottery ticket of getting a really good one. At worst I just overpaid for something I still like as much or more than 101.
I like Erin's blouse. I'm not sure that bright yellow would go with my wife's brown skin, but otherwise it'd look good on her. 🙂 I've never had Kentucky Spirit, but I like Wild Turkey 101. There are things I like better than the Turkey, but it's by no means at the bottom of the list. It's one of the bourbons that I'll keep coming back to.
It's a Tyrone K. Of all the barrels that most of the larger groups tried, pretty much all of us agreed that Tyrone T and K were turning out the best lot of barrels this year over all other warehouses including Camp Nelsons.
Kinda looks like my most recently purchased bottle of WT 101 will be my last -- it's barely fit for cocktails. I understand batch variation (and yeah, this is fairly cheap whiskey) but sorry WT, it cannot be that wide.
New to the bourbon and whiskey world. Tasted through the more available BT products, store available etc. Really like WT101 and ECBP B523. Any suggestions down those flavor profiles?
We’re big fans of both. Wheel Horse 101 is a fun bottle to try as an alternative to Wild Turkey 101. And definitely try to grab every ECBP batch you can. It’s also worth looking into Jack Daniel’s Barrel Proof.
My Total Wine has had Kentucky Spirit for the past month or so and I keep walking past it thinking I should pick one up. I just think that $60 price for a single barrel of 101 is too much.
Thanks Kevin! This one is actually a limited edition Monta Skyquest GMT from a couple years back before Tudor released their new white dial GMT. Love Tudor for sure and I'm also a big Monta fan within the microbrand space.
The Camp Nelson hype is just that in our book. We’ve now done two picks at Wild Turkey and tasted 18 barrels blind which included Camp Nelsons, and the Camp Nelsons didn’t finish in the top half of barrels on either barrel pick.
I had an unbelievable Kentucky Spirit a few years ago and because of that bottle I’ve picked a few up when I’ve seen them and they have always been a disappointment. Beginning to think my preference have just changed.
It is a good husband that comes in from the outside and hugs his wife. Well done sir.

Any KY spirit out of Camp Nelson will blow every wild turkey bottle out of the water.
Agree. Almost worth comparing other warehouse releases.

This is an interesting match up. I have this in my blind samples as well and now I am really looking forward to it popping up.
great video you two. im new to this bourbon game, so this was insightful and enjoyable to educate myself. thank you!
Very interesting. Thanks for putting the time into that one. Cheers.
Thanks for watching!
I have learned batch variance is huge! And agree that it doesn’t get talked about enough.
I have always thought Kentucky Spirit is fine but not that much better than 101 to justify the price.
Good tips, Whiskey can vary from bottle to bottle time to time. Life is good with Bourbons!

Erin really carried the episode with great tasting notes and a strong take when Josh had a rough sip and had to take a minute. Pretty awesome!
Josh here. If you ask me, Erin always carries the channel. I'm just here to keep up with the nerdy stuff. 😂 Cheers and thanks for watching!

That pricing though...
I just bought Kentucky Spirit for the first time tonight. Found it for $56
Enjoyed the video 101 is always a classic go to
Enjoy your work, another fun one 😊
Off topic, but y'alls watch game is strong!👊 This video is very telling though. Good work!
My first bottle of KY Spirit was whse E. That bottle is epic and I look at every bottle in the store to find another one!
I also go to WT 101 as the perfect warm up pour. I have had some fantastic KS, so if I’m buying one it comes down to who picked it
Kentucky Spirit was a lot better when it was released at a 104 proof point. Great show! Cheers!
Depending on the single barrel of Kentucky spirit will be different the three that I have had have been great each bottle was different and unique.
The K. Spirits I have had have been great. I noticed your thumbnail shows the old label (from what I know) of the K. Spirit. Wonder if there is a difference between the old label’s version and the new ones. Anyway great vid. Looking forward to the pick releases.

In Turkey we trust! 🦃
I would take Kentucky Spirit all day long. Yet, from a value perspective...101 clearly wins.
70!! Holy smokes. Kentucky Spirit is around 50-55 here in WI. Lowest I’ve seen it is like 47. That’s crazy.
Great comparison and video!
60-65 here in NJ. Given regional differences, not surprised at 70.
Nashville and Kentucky are both crazy on pricing.
I have a Kentucky Spirit that’s really good, just not worth the extra expense over the 101

Have you guys ever tried Stedmans Select?
Never even heard of it. Wonder if it's not distributed here or we've just overlooked it.
Is your Kentucky Spirit a camp nelson rick house, I saw one and passed on it. Cheers

Proven fact! There is 30 times more thoughts going on at one time with women! 101 is awesome!
cool video!! do you guys use a app to keep track of all the whiskey? and if so what app do you use?
We use Google Forms with dropdown boxes. It looks very similar to this example key we put together for folks that ask. forms.gle/4SZWUhpNvL1k92Lt9

I caught your no date sub before……… is that a Pepsi Tudor?
Great taste in whiskey and watches
Thanks Kevin! This one is actually a limited edition Monta Skyquest GMT from a couple years back before Tudor released their new white dial GMT. Love Tudor for sure and I'm also a big Monta fan within the microbrand space.
Man, msrp shot up a bunch on KS. As of last year I could still get a KS between 40 & 50 at local discount stores. Is the msrp really 70 these days?
It is in Nashville, TN. Likely not that high elsewhere but Nashville is crazy.
$70….hmm…I didn’t think it ran that high…I had one, but not idea how I got it.
I sometimes speak Erin!😊
Picked up a KS CN-F and was pretty disappointed. Not bad flavor, but as stated in the vid - super thin. Anything Russell’s smoked it.

It’s certainly a possibility. Taste definitively shifts over time.
WHISKEY CHEERS 😎
Gonna stick to the Rare Breed
"batch variation" is a big deal. thanks for calling it out.
It's a far bigger deal than most want to acknowledge. Cheers and thanks for watching and commenting Steve!
Warehouse T is usually the better Kentucky spirit.
Regular shelf KS are always meh.
yall are getting ripped on ky spirit, its still 50 bucks here
Just goes to show you market differences. It’s high in Kentucky too when we’ve been up there.
@@stuffandwhiskey so crazy that upstate NY of all places has some of the best bourbon prices.
Never had KS.....TW-BW has a pick for like +$90 something....🤢. Only time every seeing one in TN.
They’re rare for sure!
101 is boring. 🤷
Fair enough. To each their own. Some days we’d agree with you and others we enjoy it a lot.
No wild turkey is worth $70.
Turkey ain’t for everyone!
Some Russell’s picks, WT101 12 Year, RR13 and a few others would qualify, but most wouldn’t (and we’re huge Turkey fans).
Erin's hair is getting so long. It looks pretty. I love my wife's long hair but she gets wild hairs sometimes and cuts it super short yikes LOL
