Need an Intel CPU containing replacement for my aging Synology DS916+ (Plex transcoding), but uGreen still not on sale in UK (only Germany & US). Don’t want to import (support, taxes, etc) but would buy if on sale in UK. No I don’t want Synology’s only (aged design) Intel 4 bay NAS (423+) - embarrassing offering for 2024, but then they’ve drunk the corporate cool-aid and seem hypnotised by that market!
I wanted a Ugreen NAS. Missed the Kickstarter and it is not for sale in the UK yet. I have given up waiting and bought a Flashstor 6 when it was on sale for ~£350 last month. Not offering these NAS's worldwide was a massive fail for Ugreen!
Ugreen is reputable- The Kickstarter price was great but the scheme had potential to be a rug pull. Now the pricing is too high considering other options. I would consider it if there were some hardware revisions..
What capacity Exos drives? I have a DXP8800 Plus as well and it works well with Plex IMO. I’m using a mix of drives. WD Red (CMR) 16TB (four) and 14TB (three). Although I just bought a 20TB and plan to buy another 20TB. Eventually I’ll standardize on all 20TB drives.
@@jodajackson4489I thought these NAS units required one size drives? Or is that because you are using another OS? Sorry i am a newbie and still learning about NAS units
@@adrianjenkins2447 RAID can mix and match, but you will limit the capacity to the size of the smallest drive. Example: five 4TB drives, and one 6TB drive the RAID will treat the 6TB drive as a 4TB drive.
Taking it all in, it just seems like they are crawling before they walk. UG will undoubtedly flesh out the missing bits over time. From what you've said, these machines seem to have a lot of promise. I just hope that the shortcomings don't poison the well with people thinking that the evolution as ceased here.
I could not buy the Kickstarter offer, due the limited offer to only US and Germany. Now, the SSD version price is insanely high (compared with the Kickstarter) and still not available in my country (while UGreen offers other products). I got the Flashstor 6.
Whats a better deal??? The AOOSTAR WTR PRO AMD Ryzen 7 5825u for 400 USD or the UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Plus for 560 USD? Mostly docker services, image backup and plex server.
Currently UGreen NAS models are on offer stateside. Over $100 off depending on model. Personally I don’t think anything beats the Kickstarter price and while it still a decent product at retail price there are other options with similar hardware now. TerraMaster has a number of models using the Core i5 1235U and Core i7 1255U. The F6-424 Max and F4-424 Max are noteworthy options. I have the DXP8800 Plus (Kickstarter) and I am reasonably pleased with it.
I have never owned a NAS and have been using portable SSD HDD. I don't get the vibe that there is a perfect product out there for me yet. At a risk to loosing my files I think I will wait for a high Tb storage solution utilising SSD's in a small form factor. That does not exist yet.
got the Aoostar WTR Pro AMD instead...changed out the wifi card with m2 key adaptor. running the OS from that slot on 2230 nvme. 2 free nvme bays + 4 hdd bays. Wonder Ugreen can even sell these at that price.
The larger units have USB-4 connectivity. Can this be used to connect a mac directly to use as a ‘DAS’ or is it only network connections for accessing shared files?
Would you go the normal DXP4800 or the Plus version? Whats the real perfomance increase of the plus version? I have yet to find content that helps give data to make this decision. I know the plus has a cpu with 1 more core... but what does that mean to performance. The plus also has a 10gb ethernet port... but i would not even benifit from that at current. My main use case scenario is plex media sever with up to 4 concurrent users and just general personal file and photo storage backup for my family.
I'd like to know how well this Ugreen NAS works with TrueNAS scale and other OS's; is there driver support for the 10G ethernet NICs? ...the Thunderbolt 4 ports? ...included in a standard OS install, or do I have to hunt for drivers and tweak some things? (I know I'd have to make a few BIOS changes.) Seems like the hardware specs are great but I'd almost prefer they didn't try to reinvent the wheel with their own OS. There's plenty of more evolved (and free) options out there to use, but do they work well? Is there any downside to just using TrueNAS or ProxMox (or even Windows) on an additional SSD? (and set BIOS to ignoring the built in SSD to preserve warranty and the option to use UGOS). I know it's possible to install other OS's because I watched your other video, but is there any downside to going that route?
I have the DXP8800 plus and have installed proxmox to boot from one of the nvmes and wanted to virtualise Truenas under proxmox.SATA Controller passthrough (it has two) works only for the first 4 bays but not the last 4 bays. Until now I don’t see any solution other than passing the individual HDDs of the last 4bays to have the 8 bays showing under Truenas
I have 2 6bay units and have a question. I am happy with the hardware and true there are for sure problems with the software and tech helps very much. I want to connect a UPS to protect units on power failure, is there a way that I can connect 2 units to shut down smoothly or do I have to buy 2 UPS units?
Why 2 UPS? . You can connect both to a single (but sufficient) UPS Then select SNMP option ( this requires that your UPS must be equipped with Network Management Card)
@@IamShopping I bought a QNAP TS464 on a 2nd hand site which included the 10gbe/2NVME card, the other week.
